Chapter 48 Meeting the Parents
Both Xu Hui and Grandpa Xu had slightly moist eyes, indicating that they had been discussing a very heavy topic.
Qiao Mei pretended not to notice the two elders' unusual behavior. After getting closer as Grandpa Xu had instructed, she introduced the little black dragon wrapped around her neck.
“Grandpa, this is my pet beast, a little black dragon named Cangcang.”
When the girl introduced him, she looked solemn, giving the impression that she regarded Ao Cang as more than just an ordinary familiar beast.
This made Ao Cang's expression complicated, and the dragon's body wrapped around Qiao Mei tightened its grip considerably.
Xu Wenfeng had heard that Qiao Mei had chosen a sacred abandoned beast as her familiar. He glanced at the little black dragon, which was not exactly good-looking and was missing a dragon scale, and coughed lightly again. The head of a noble family actually thanked Ao Cang.
"If you hadn't chosen Xiao Mei and helped her, she probably wouldn't be standing here unharmed right now. I, Xu Wenfeng, am here on behalf of the entire Xu family to express my sincere gratitude to you."
Seeing Xu Wenfeng about to bend down as he spoke, Qiao Mei snapped out of her daze and quickly stopped him, saying, "Grandpa, what are you doing? You don't need to do that."
But Xu Wenfeng was a stubborn person, and he still completed the formalities of expressing his gratitude.
Seeing this, Ao Cang understood Xu Wenfeng's meaning and accepted his thanks without refusing. Then, he lowered his dragon head and said under Xu Wenfeng's surprised gaze, "In that case, I should also thank you. If it weren't for your granddaughter's firm choice of me, I might not be in such a good state now."
His actions not only cleverly resolved Qiao Mei's embarrassment, but also made Xu Wenfeng look at him in a new light.
Xu Wenfeng stared at Ao Cang for a long while before nodding in satisfaction: "Not bad. It seems that Xiao Mei made the right choice in choosing you as her familiar. With such a smart familiar following her, she will probably avoid a lot of detours in the future."
After saying all that, Xu Wenfeng coughed a few more times, his pale lips revealing his gradually declining condition.
Seeing Xu Wenfeng's appearance, Qiao Mei didn't want to waste too much time, lest the old man Xu couldn't handle it, so she went straight to the point and asked him, "Grandpa, what did you want to say when you called me in alone? The sooner you finish, the sooner you can rest. If there's anything else you want to say, you can say it after you've rested. Mother said she wants to stay at the old house for one night."
Xu Hui never said that. Qiao Mei did this simply to help the father and daughter improve their relationship.
Xu Hui has now separated from the royal family, and Xu Wenfeng clearly still cares about his daughter Xu Hui. As an observer who can see the situation clearly, she naturally has to help them out.
Sure enough, after hearing what she said, Grandpa Xu looked at Xu Hui with surprise and asked her to confirm the truth of the matter.
Qiao Mei had already spoken, and Xu Hui only then realized how poor Old Master Xu's health was. She wanted to spend more time with him, so of course she wouldn't expose Qiao Mei and nodded.
"That's right, Dad, don't worry. If you're really feeling unwell, we can talk about it later, it's the same thing."
"Alright, alright, then this old man will give you the birthday present I couldn't give you before. As for the betrothal between you and Xu Heyu, let's talk about it at lunchtime. My useless body is already a bit tired after talking for only a short while."
As Xu Wenfeng spoke, he opened his personal terminal, asked for Qiao Mei's personal terminal ID, and then sent the birthday gift he had mentioned to Qiao Mei's email address.
"I don't know if you're satisfied. If you're not, you can bring it up with Grandpa later. Cough cough... Okay, go out with your mom first. Grandpa needs to call his private doctor to come and check on things. See you at noon."
Qiao Mei didn't rush to check her email. Instead, she went to help Xu Hui, who seemed to have had a good cry and was feeling a bit weak, out of the room.
As soon as I stepped outside, I saw two very formally dressed people at the entrance. If you didn't know better, you would think they were a middle-aged couple walking the red carpet.
Upon closer inspection, the middle-aged woman in the bright red trailing evening gown had the same blue eyes as Xu Heyu, and her features also bore a resemblance to his.
As for the man, he seemed timid and hesitant, following behind the middle-aged woman, his unremarkable face lowered so much that it was almost invisible.
If it weren't for the fact that he was being held by the arm by a middle-aged woman, Qiao Mei would have almost thought that he was a servant who had come along.
When the woman saw Qiao Mei and her daughter come out, her blue eyes lit up for a moment. She walked up to Qiao Mei in her high heels and reached out to take her arm, but Qiao Mei dodged her.
But the woman's expression only showed embarrassment for a moment; she quickly recovered, a fawning smile on her face, and looked at Xu Hui, saying:
“In-laws, if Yu and Xiao Mei have done anything to upset her, just tell us. The two children are immature, and we as parents certainly can't just stand by and watch. Everyone knows that Yu and Xiao Mei like each other. What a wonderful match made in heaven. It's such a pity to ruin it like this!”
As the woman spoke, she glared at the middle-aged man who was still standing dumbfounded not far away, and then beckoned Xu Heyu over.
Xu Heyu followed silently behind the middle-aged man whose temperament was completely different from his own, a look of embarrassment appearing in his eyes.
He stopped in front of Qiao Mei, opening his mouth to say something, but was interrupted by the woman, who pressed his shoulder hard and said with a fake smile, "He Yu, quickly apologize to Xiao Mei. How can a boy like you make a girl angry?"
Qiao Mei noticed the stiffness in Xu Heyu's body and expression, grabbed his arm, pulled him to her side, and then looked up at Xu's mother, who was looking at her with surprise, and said:
“Aunt Xu, there has been no conflict between Xu Heyu and me, and he has not made me angry. The reason I am asking to break off the engagement is simply because I have realized that I no longer like him. If this engagement continues, he will be the one who suffers the most.”
"You don't like him anymore?!" Xu's mother frowned and looked Xu Heyu up and down. She didn't find anything about him that looked worse than before. She was about to say something more when Xu Hui interrupted her.
"Alright, you've all seen Xiaomei's attitude on this matter. There's no need to say anything more. Let's see how my dad expresses his stance at lunchtime."
After Xu Hui finished speaking, she left with Qiao Mei, not giving her mother a chance to continue arguing.
After walking a distance with her, Qiao Mei looked at Xu Heyu, who was bowing his head and letting Xu's mother poke his body and head, and felt a little complicated.
However, it was only for a moment, after all, it was Xu Heyu's own private matter.
Composing herself, she opened her emails after entering Xu Hui's former bedroom with Xu Hui, wanting to see what birthday gift Grandpa Xu had given her, and why he was being so secretive about it.
Ao Cang: I met their parents! They seemed quite satisfied...
