Chapter 12: Prohibition of Genetic Research

Shen Junyi sighed and opened his computer to check while saying, "It has nothing to do with which hospital. In our Beichen Empire, genetic research has always been strictly prohibited. Once discovered, it is a serious crime. The National Academy of Sciences does not even have a branch of genetic research. Tell me, how can this be treated?"

"There are so many genetic evolvers, why is genetic research strictly prohibited?" Xia Chujian widened his eyes, very confused.

Shen Junyi smiled faintly: “First meeting, do you often skip school?”

Xia Chujian: “…”

Does this have anything to do with her problem?

Shen Junyi continued, "Because if you studied hard, you should have learned that our Beichen Empire believes in the natural evolution of genes and does not allow any external interference. Once the genes are interfered with, they will be like those humanoid pariahs and slaves, leaving behind dire consequences that will affect future generations."

"Therefore, the Beichen Empire has enacted laws strictly prohibiting genetic research since its founding. Violations will result in severe punishment."

"Those genetic evolutionists all achieved positive gene mutations naturally, not through chemical interference. —This is what we learned in class."

Xia Chujian's mouth twitched, and she asked unwillingly, "But my aunt was fine before, but suddenly fainted and never woke up again. Is it really due to genetics?"

"Well, I don't know the cause of the fainting yet, but your aunt has actually had health problems for a long time. She's been enduring it all these years and hasn't sought treatment. The fainting three years ago was just a trigger, not the direct cause. It's like a pole that looks good on the outside but is riddled with holes on the inside. A gust of wind will knock it down."

Xia Chujian took a deep breath, his face full of disappointment and sadness.

She murmured, "Really...really...is there no other way?"

She had just exchanged the money and she thought her aunt was saved!

how so?

how so?

Xia Chujian, who had been full of confidence in saving her aunt for three years and had never shed a tear, gradually had red eyes.

The red birthmark at the end of the eye, like the red spider lily, became increasingly glaring.

Shen Junyi couldn't bear to watch any longer, so he withdrew his gaze and searched the hospital's internal medical network for a while, and suddenly exclaimed.

Xia Chujian hurriedly looked up and looked at him hopefully: "Doctor Shen, have you found any solution?!"

Shen Junyi said, "I just saw a message on the intranet saying that Professor Tan Taisinian was recently named an academician and will soon be transferred to the Imperial Capital Royal Academy of Sciences. Before leaving, he will give his final academic report to the entire Mulan City medical system on genetic evolution."

As he spoke, he looked at Xia Chujian: "Maybe he has some other way to cure your aunt's illness."

"Tantai Sinian? Is he from the royal family?"

Shen Junyi nodded: "It can be considered a royal family, but it is already a very remote branch. He himself is not even a noble, but just a citizen."

Xia Chujian looked at him with confusion.

She only knew that "Dan Tai" was the royal family's surname, and she didn't quite understand the relationship between the royal family, the nobility, and the citizens.

Shen Junyi smiled and patiently explained, "The royal family's surname is Tan Tai, but not all people with the surname Tan Tai are royals. Those royal family members who haven't ascended to the throne will be demoted to nobles after the new emperor ascends the throne."

"After three generations of nobility, they become citizens. In our Beichen Empire, only the four great noble families have hereditary succession. Other noble families cannot pass on their titles for more than three generations, even the royal family is no exception."

"Oh..." Xia Chujian rolled his eyes in frustration, "But no matter how much they are demoted, they are still citizens. They will never be demoted to civilians, right?"

Shen Junyi smiled and said, "Of course. In the Beichen Empire, the highest class is the royal family, followed by the nobles, and then the citizens. Then there are the common people, the untouchables, and the slaves."

"No matter how poor these royal family members are, they still share the same ancestor as the emperor. How could they be reduced to commoners? However, letting them eventually be demoted to ordinary citizens is better than having them be royals or nobles for generations, right?"

Xia Chujian didn't understand politics and didn't pay attention to it. She nodded as if she understood.

Shen Junyi didn't say any more about this and continued, "Professor Tantai Sinian is the chief scientist of Li's Pharmaceuticals. Only someone of his caliber can do research that touches on genetics."

When Xia Chujian heard "Li's Pharmaceuticals", a hint of hesitation flashed in his eyes.

But she nodded and said, "Can I go to his lecture? You also said it's a lecture for the medical system, so can outsiders go?"

"No problem. It's a remote meeting at 1:00 PM. Come to my office. I have permission for you to sit in."

Xia Chujian agreed.

It was still some time before one o'clock in the afternoon, so she went back to her aunt's ward first and, together with the nurse, gave the still unconscious Xia Yuanfang a bath and then a massage.

After finishing the whole process, it was already noon.

Her stomach started to growl again, but she resisted the urge to eat because she had to be frugal even with the low-grade nutrient solution that cost only a dime a tube.

I went to my aunt's ward to drink some water, packed up casually, and came to Shen Junyi's office around 12:50.

The meeting started on time at one o'clock in the afternoon.

In the conference room with holographic three-dimensional projection, Tan Tai Sinian sat alone on the podium.

He is a well-maintained man. Although he is in his sixties, he looks like he is only in his forties.

As a scientist of the Beichen Empire, this age is the time when he is in his prime and ready to produce results.

He played three-dimensional holographic projection data and picture video presentations on the podium, which were particularly mysterious and profound.
