"I told you that day that if one day I was no longer king, I would want to marry you."
"And you replied that if one day I was no longer queen, I would also hope to marry you."
They smiled at each other, but their eyes were slightly moist.
"It's almost time."
Leonidas looked out the window and saw that the darkness had begun to fade and the rays of the rising sun began to illuminate the earth.
"I have to go now."
Gorgo went forward and hugged him, tightly and for a long time.
She did not cry or beg, but just whispered in her husband's ear.
"I'll wait for you to come back."
Leonidas nodded.
He released her arms, picked up his helmet, and looked around the bedroom where they had lived together for decades for the last time.
This is their starting point.
"Tell our son that his father loves him more than anything."
Gorgo nodded.
"You will definitely come back, because I love you too, and you can't bear to leave us."
Leonidas put on his helmet, a smile returning to his face.
But it is a bit desolate.
"You're right."
He took one last look at his wife and son, then turned and walked towards the door.
Gorgo, on the other hand, took up Leonidas' shield and followed him.
She handed the shield to Leonidas.
The two of them were silent, and Leonidas slowly took the shield.
That means: either return triumphantly with a shield, or die on the battlefield.
This is a Spartan tradition.
