“Woo——”
A low horn sounded.
"Army, march out!"
The army of the Holy Egyptian League began to march towards Jerusalem.
The axles of the chariots turned slowly, and the footsteps of the armored soldiers caused the stones on the street to tremble slightly.
A middle-aged man stood at the door of his bakery, holding half a loaf of bread in his hand.
His oven had never been burned out since the Holy Egyptian came.
Because they asked him to make fresh bread to supply the people in the city and the army.
"Can I still have some bread?"
His little son tugged at the corner of his clothes, his eyes fixed on the food in his father's hand.
"Of course."
The middle-aged man ruffled his son's hair and broke the pancake into two halves.
"The holy Egyptians said that Bethlehem is now theirs."
"Even if they leave, this place will still be under their control."
The middle-aged man wanted to say "Isn't it so?", but after seeing that the Holy Egyptian Alliance really left, the words choked on his lips and he couldn't say them.
Across the street, several Hebrew women gathered in front of a public granary.
They held the newly received wheat in their hands with expressions of disbelief on their faces.
"The last time I saw so much grain was during the bumper harvest more than a decade ago."
An older woman whispered, her fingers carefully running over the plump grains of wheat.
Then, her gaze gradually dimmed.
"It's so good to live in Holy Egypt. I can live like this every day."
"But now that the people from the Holy Egyptian Alliance have left, can we still get food like this?"
As soon as she finished speaking, the eyes of the people around her dimmed.
No one responded, everyone just looked in the direction where the Holy Egyptian Alliance army left.
After all, they had been living through hard times and suffering from famine for a long time.
Especially for families who lost their husbands in the war, life became even more difficult for these Hebrews.
Food like bread is a luxury for them.
However, when the last group of Egyptian soldiers disappeared at the city gate, a sense of uneasiness began to spread among the crowd.
"After they left..."
“Will there be more people robbing in the middle of the night?”
"Only the soldiers of the Holy Egyptian Alliance patrol at night, and now, their soldiers have also left."
"What should we do with the food we received? Will someone rob and kill us in the middle of the night?"
When everyone heard this, they felt the food in their hands suddenly become heavy.
They recalled the days before the Holy Egyptian League came to the city of Bethlehem.
The empty food stalls in the market, the cries and shouts that came one after another in the middle of the night, and the bandits who took advantage of the situation to rob.
Apparently, the Holy Egyptian Alliance brought order and stability to the city.
However, this order and stability seemed to be gradually disappearing as the Holy Egyptian Alliance went away.
"City Lord, the City Lord is here!"
At this time, someone shouted loudly.
At this time, the city lord David slowly walked up to the high platform in the center of the square.
He was dressed in a simple linen robe, with only a short sword at his waist.
The crowd fell silent and everyone held their breath.
"People of Bethlehem, I am David, the Lord of the City."
His voice was not loud, but it was clearly heard throughout the square.
“Although the army of the Holy Egyptian League has left, Bethlehem is still temporarily under their rule.”
"Not all of them have left. There are still troops from the Holy Egyptian Alliance stationed in the city."
Then he held up a bronze plate engraved with a scarab emblem, which was obviously some kind of token of Holy Egypt.
"This is the warrant from Saint Pharaoh."
"The granaries will remain open and patrols will continue to operate as normal."
"There is no need to worry. If anyone commits a crime, they will be severely punished."
There was a burst of cheers from the crowd.
"Great! Great!"
"I thought that after the Holy Egyptian Alliance left, we would have to live the same hard life as before!"
“It’s great to be able to continue living this kind of life!”
"Thank you, City Lord, and thank you, Holy Egyptian Alliance!"
The crowd cheered in waves, but in just two days, they seemed to have forgotten the fear that the Holy Egyptian Alliance had brought to them when they first set foot in the city of Bethlehem.
"There's even better news."
City Lord David then raised his voice and continued.
"As long as it remains under the control of Holy Egypt, the food supply will remain the same as it is now."
"That means everyone doesn't have to go hungry anymore."
“No more spending money on expensive food.”
This time even the oldest elders smiled.
The tavern owner secretly wiped his eyes, and the apprentice in the blacksmith shop jumped up excitedly.
People cheered as if this was some kind of celebration.
"but."
City Lord David suddenly became serious, and the cheers from below stopped abruptly as his expression changed.
"The Holy Egyptian Alliance left, and there are not enough soldiers on patrol."
"We need to form our own patrol."
"If anyone is willing to participate, please come here to sign up tomorrow morning."
"The selected ones will receive an extra pancake every day."
As soon as these words were spoken, the crowd became agitated again.
Dozens of young people have gathered together, eager to try.
"Father, are you going to attend?"
The youngest son looked up with bread crumbs at the corners of his mouth.
