Chapter 355 Questions
They found an opportunity to ask the weary-looking commander their questions.
“General, these attacking creatures seem to be of a fixed type, and they look like…” Jemin carefully chose his words, “…like some kind of mass-producible cannon fodder unit?”
The commander glanced at Jemin with some surprise, seemingly not expecting that this "technical advisor" could see that.
He nodded, his tone heavy: "That's right, these are their expendable vanguard. The real trouble lies with the 'blue-skinned monsters' behind them, possessing higher intelligence and piloting bizarre vehicles. They are the true commanders and formidable opponents."
"Blue-skinned devils?" Rex shrewdly seized on the term. "Do you have any samples or prisoners we could study?"
“Yes, because their skin is blue. We’ve recovered some wreckage, but not much. They seem to have some kind of self-destruct mechanism, or they’re recovered by their comrades in time, making it difficult to obtain complete research samples.” The commander shook his head. “We don’t have any wreckage on hand right now.”
This left Jemin and Rex somewhat disappointed.
For the next few days, they behaved unusually "well-behaved".
There were no further requests to travel to dangerous areas; instead, they simply used the observation data provided by the base for analysis.
Occasionally, under absolutely safe protection, some environmental parameters are collected outside the base.
It wasn't that Jemin and his group didn't want to obtain more data; the main reason was that they were well aware that, in their current state of being suppressed to that of ordinary people, recklessly stepping into the battlefield would be tantamount to suicide.
Their "cooperation" and "professionalism" won the commander's favor, and the alert level was gradually lowered.
In fact, to meet their need for "more detailed battlefield environment data," the commander specially arranged for an experienced and well-equipped squad to escort them to an area relatively close to the front line where a small-scale conflict had just occurred for "on-site reconnaissance."
However, an accident occurred during this exploration.
"Attention! Enemy attack!"
Accompanied by the piercing alarm, Jemin and Rex nimbly ducked behind the protection squad.
After confirming that they had not fallen into an ambush, they cautiously used remote observation tools to look at the so-called enemy.
It was a group of about a dozen "alien" units, mixed with a few creatures that looked like molten core dogs and two crudely designed walking mechs that resembled insect arthropods.
For some reason, this team broke through the warning net ahead and appeared in the hilly area on the flank, where they ran head-on into the guard squad that Jemin and his men were with!
At this moment, the other side seemed somewhat surprised to encounter enemies. Although the two walking mechs did not seem to have time to react, the surrounding bio-beasts had already assumed attack stances.
"Protect the technical personnel!" the guard captain roared, and the well-trained soldiers immediately spread out in a fan shape.
Energy rifles spewed out scorching beams of light, and automatic turrets quickly deployed from the transport vehicle, forming a makeshift defensive line.
The battle broke out suddenly and fiercely.
The fireballs spewed by the Molten Core Hound exploded on the energy shield with a dazzling yet dangerous aura, while the walking mechs' rapid-fire energy weapons plowed scorch marks into the ground.
The escort team maintained a firm advantage thanks to its superior firepower and excellent equipment.
Their marksmanship was excellent, and their teamwork was seamless. They quickly suppressed and annihilated the enemy squad that had ventured deep into enemy territory.
The whole process was thrilling but without any real danger. Under the close protection of the soldiers, Jemin and Rex did not even feel much threat.
But their eyes were fixed on the two walking mechs that had been given special attention and were eventually paralyzed and smoking.
The battle is over, time to clean up the battlefield.
The soldiers carefully examined each "corpse" to ensure that the threat was completely eliminated.
"Sir! There's a mech here. Its core has been destroyed, but its outer shell is relatively intact!" a soldier reported loudly.
Jemin and Rex exchanged a glance, and Rex immediately requested the guard captain, "Captain, this relatively intact enemy vehicle is extremely valuable for research! It might help us find their weaknesses. Please allow us to take it back to base for analysis!"
The captain looked at the two "still shaken" but still dedicated technical experts, and then at the strange mech that was damaged but structurally intact.
After a moment's consideration, he nodded.
Actually, he didn't think that Jemin and his group could make any new discoveries, since they had already studied these blue-skinned ghosts many times.
However, he was well aware of how curious these researchers were, and since there were transport vehicles to help get them back, it wouldn't take much effort.
More importantly, with this, they could end their tedious guard duty early and go back.
With the help of the soldiers, the "alien" mech, which smelled of burnt metal and strange engine oil, was carefully loaded onto a transport vehicle and transported back to the secret research warehouse at the rear base.
After receiving the commander's tacit approval, the two immediately began dissecting and analyzing the mech.
After removing the twisted and deformed armor, the exposed cockpit contained the remains of a pilot who had already lost all signs of life.
As the commander stated, this is a non-humanoid creature.
Its skin has an unnatural indigo blue color, its body is slightly thinner than that of an average human, its head is proportionally larger, and its facial features are about 70-80% similar to those of a human, but it has many octopus-like limbs and no obvious hair.
However, when Rex used the base's medical scanning equipment to conduct in-depth anatomical analysis, he made an even more astonishing discovery.
“Jermin, look here!” Rex pointed to the diagram of the organism’s internal structure projected on the holographic projection, his voice filled with suppressed excitement, “Next to its circulatory system, this parallel, distributed pipe system, similar to a neural network but different… this structure, this potential distribution of nodes…”
Jemin stared intently; as a wizard, he was intimately familiar with the flow of energy within living beings.
Although the complex meridian system before him was different from any cultivation system he knew in detail, its overall structure and the location of key nodes were clearly designed to efficiently guide and contain some kind of extraordinary energy!
In other words, this is a physiological basis for having the potential to cast spells!
Moreover, this creature is very likely to be born with superpowers.
However, under the suppression of the special rules of this plane, the innate advantages of this race were erased, and they could only be suppressed and beaten by humans.
Jemin and Rex exchanged a glance, both seeing the understanding in each other's eyes.
“Throughout my travels, apart from a very few individuals, the majority of the inhabitants of those planets were still humans,” Jemin suddenly said.
“Based on this situation, the main body of the ‘native’ civilization of this plane is most likely the human society we are currently in,” Rex said in a low voice. “And these ‘aliens,’ including those cannon fodder creatures from before… as long as they are not humanoid beings, they have been specifically designated as ‘hostile factions’ by the ‘system’ of this plane.”
After all, the living environments of humans and other races are vastly different, and according to Jemin's records over the past few years, the alien races that humans have encountered in the news are not just one.
Such a stark difference in living standards suggests that, unless the race behind the scenes has some peculiar fetish, the beings behind this plane are predominantly human.
“But why?” Rex pushed up his glasses, the lenses reflecting a cold light. “Given the capabilities this system has demonstrated, maintaining absolute peace, even uniting all races, would be a piece of cake. Why would it go to such lengths to create a continuous, seemingly meaningless interstellar war?”
Jemin shook his head regretfully.
These newly added questions naturally cannot be answered.
But for explorers, the question itself is a signpost leading to the truth.
At least, Jemin and his group now know that these wars did not happen naturally, but were "designed".
So, the purpose of designing this war may be one of the keys to unlocking all these mysteries.
