Chapter 355

Meng Xia also fell silent. "Sigh, in the past and in normal times, everyone thought this was bad and that was bad, but when a real crisis occurs, they realize that those ordinary and simple days are the happiest."

She picked up the newspaper and saw the date on it; it was the day the end of the world would come.

An Ge didn't offer her any comfort; at this moment, any words of comfort would be futile. Even if this might be a natural law of the plane's development, for those within it, the cost of such a law is far too high.

The two didn't touch much of the house, only tidying up a small open area. Then, Meng Xia saw An Ge take a bed out of her spatial storage.

"Even though I knew you had everything in your space, I was still surprised to see you take these out."

"That's called being prepared for a rainy day."

The two chatted, and time passed quickly.

Nighttime is when the zombies are at their strongest and most active. The constant roars of zombies echoed from afar, startling Meng Xia so much that she dared not loosen her grip on An Ge's sleeve.

“There are exotic plants protecting us. If any zombies come, they will warn me in advance, so you don’t need to worry,” An Ge reassured Meng Xia, thinking she was worried about zombies coming in.

"This isn't a matter of worry; it's just a conditioned reflex." In her time, it had only been a little over a year since she left the apocalypse.

An Ge understood. Just like her fear of some soft-bodied animals, it wasn't a matter of strength, but purely a matter of fear.

The zombies' roars grew louder and louder, and just as Meng Xia was getting used to it, An Ge frowned.

The sounds these zombies make are strange.

Amidst the crumbling walls and ruins of the high-rise buildings, a disheveled figure frantically dodges zombies. He moves swiftly, darting through the darkness like a nimble cat.

As a speed-based ability user, Cheng Tian was able to barely support his family at the beginning of the apocalypse thanks to his ability, but as the zombies became stronger, the speed at which his ability advanced simply couldn't keep up.

Over time, his speed ability, apart from increasing his chances of survival when collecting supplies, didn't have much use.

Food supplies at the base are dwindling. After paying protection money, there's practically nothing left, and many superhumans are forming teams to go outside and collect supplies.

His superpowers weren't helpful to the team, and he didn't have a fixed squad. He came out with two high-level superpowered individuals, thinking it would be safe, but he ended up being used as a shield.

He managed to escape from the horde of zombies after exerting all his strength.

Thinking of his wife and young daughter waiting at home, Chengtian's eyes were filled with hatred.

If he manages to get back alive this time, he will definitely not let those two go. Many betrayals occur in the apocalypse, and similarly, the base won't interfere much in personal grudges.

Cheng Tian was panting heavily; his supernatural power had been greatly depleted, and he had slowed down considerably.

With some distance to go from the base, Cheng Tian was looking for a place to hide and wait until dawn to regain his powers before returning when he suddenly sensed a strong gaze.

Chengtian looked up and vaguely saw a figure. The figure slowly approached him, seemingly unconcerned about being discovered by the zombies.

His alarm went off; the person opposite him was likely a high-level superhuman. He didn't know whether encountering a human at this moment was a good thing or a bad thing.

As the figure drew closer, Cheng Tian's hair stood on end. That wasn't a human at all; it was clearly a high-level, rational zombie.

"It's over!" That was Chengtian's first reaction.

Encountering humans offers a chance of escape, but encountering high-level zombies offers little hope of survival.

Thinking of his family at home, Chengtian suddenly felt a surge of courage. He couldn't just sit and wait to die; he had to escape!

Under this momentum, he unleashed tremendous power and quickly ran out of the alley.

After running for a while, he finally stopped due to exhaustion of his supernatural abilities.

The zombies should have left by now, right? Cheng Tian thought, and cautiously turned his head. The scene before him filled him with despair.

Less than fifty meters away from him, a group of zombies was walking towards him. Among the zombies, the one he thought he had shaken off was leisurely watching him.

Cat chasing mouse! That was Chengtian's first reaction.

This zombie's special ability is that it has its own thoughts; it is a high-level zombie.

The zombie seemed to find it a bit boring, waved its hand, and suddenly sped up its pace as it slowly approached him.

With nowhere left to retreat, in his despair, Chengtian vaguely saw a ray of light.

Is there light? Are there people?

Zombies don't light lamps in the dark; where there is light, there must be humans.

Chengtian didn't have time to think about why humans would light up lamps so brightly at night in a place teeming with zombies. He only knew that it might be his only hope for survival.

Having exhausted his supernatural abilities, Chengtian used his last bit of strength to run toward the light.

Inside the courtyard, An Ge hung up the lantern amidst Meng Xia's puzzled gaze.

"Little Ge'er, just because zombies have excellent hearing doesn't mean they have poor eyesight. Are you hanging a lantern to attract zombies?"

After saying that, she yawned. Suddenly, as if discovering something, Xiao Ge'er got up to hang up the lantern, startling her awake.

An Ge looked speechlessly at the carefree Meng Xia, "I think the zombies' cries are wrong; their voices seem to be filled with excitement."

"There are humans?" Meng Xia's drowsiness vanished instantly.

Zombies only get this excited when they're around humans. But who would be wandering around outside so late at night?

An Ge shook her head. "I'm just speculating. Let's just keep the lanterns up. If there are zombies, we can just watch Plants vs. Zombies."

Thinking back to the live-action mini-game in the vampire forbidden zone, Ange felt a pang of nostalgia.

Meng Xia had also played this game on An Ge's recommendation, and thinking about it calmed her nerves.

After giving instructions to the few remaining unpurified alien plants, An Ge pulled Meng Xia back to the room.

At this moment, Chengtian was running towards the light. Without his superpowers and exhausted, the distance between his zombies was constantly shrinking.

Just as the zombies were about to get close, he finally ran into the courtyard.

Upon entering the courtyard, Chengtian saw several tall, exotic plants waving their tentacles.

Escaping one tiger's den only to fall into another—nothing could be more despairing.

Chengtian gave a bitter laugh, closed his eyes in despair, and prepared to accept his impending death.

After waiting for a while, the expected pain did not come. Cheng Tian opened his eyes and saw the alien plant entangled with several approaching zombies, swinging back and forth as if it had found a new toy.

What's going on? The alien plants and zombies have always been peaceful, so why are they suddenly fighting amongst themselves?

Just as Chengtian was puzzled, the door creaked open and two women walked out of the house.

Chengtian looked in the direction of the sound, and in the blood-red moonlight and hazy lamplight, he felt as if he had seen a fairy.

The woman at the head of the group was aloof and ethereal, as if she were about to vanish into thin air with the moonlight at any moment, while the woman beside her was also pretty and charming.

If it weren't for the constant howling of zombies in his ears, he would have thought he was trespassing.
