On a mountain path, a donkey cart was slowly moving forward, the sound of its wheels standing out prominently in the quiet, dense forest.
Before dawn, Dou Fugui loaded the vegetables and some game he had bought the day before onto the cart, and set off for Xianyuan Inn on a rented donkey cart.
Walking along the path, Dou Fugui's heart pounded. He had been so excited yesterday that he hadn't realized how anyone could live in this deep mountain forest. But he had already promised the benefactor and received the deposit; he couldn't back out at the last minute.
Just when Dou Fugui was feeling uncertain, he finally saw the white building that the benefactor had mentioned.
"Goodness, this is even more impressive than the village chief's tiled house!" Dou Fugui exclaimed, his mouth agape. He had never seen such a tall building in the county town, and he hesitated to approach from outside the inn. He had heard that important people were very particular about etiquette, and he didn't want to offend them.
Chef Wei waited at the inn entrance at the agreed time. Looking at Dou Fugui, who was hesitating, he waved with his round belly and said, "What are you standing there for? I've been waiting for you for ages. Put the goods in the kitchen and I'll check them first."
Dou Fugui then mustered up his courage and drove the donkey cart over, nervously watching Chef Wei take inventory of the goods.
"The quality is all good. From now on, deliver every other day, and make sure the quality is the same as this time." After inspecting the goods, Chef Wei handed the final payment to Dou Fugui.
"Okay, I promise it won't be bad." Dou Fugui took the money, his voice trembling with excitement.
On his way back, he looked back at the inn as it receded into the distance, as if looking at the hope of life.
After entrusting the purchasing matters to Chef Wei, An Ge no longer inquired about them. This was partly due to her trust in her people, and partly because the operating system provided a detailed daily list of income and expenses, making it convenient for An Ge to check the accounts.
In fact, as long as the employees aren't greedy, she won't interfere if they occasionally take small advantages. In her previous life, she used to think about slacking off every day when she was working.
An Ge looked at the task that was about to be completed and happily curled the corners of her mouth.
Due to the increase in guests recently, she completed two temporary tasks and received "a hot spring bathtub" and "a room design blueprint" respectively. Although the rewards were not as good as those given by Shen Qinghe's tasks, they were better than nothing.
Ange liked both rewards. The hot spring bathtub, in particular, allowed users to relax and unwind while enjoying the hot spring, making Ange's days much easier.
However, the temporary mission that An Ge was most concerned about remained unresolved. An Ge inquired with Yun Mo and the people at the inn, but found no one who had any contact with Xiao Chen.
"How about we ask the big treasury?"
Just as An Ge was worrying about the temporary task, Hu Jiu walked over, followed by five raggedly dressed teenagers.
"This is?"
Hu Jiu crossed his arms, raised his chin, and said, "I've noticed someone peeking around outside the inn these past two days, and I caught them red-handed today. They're probably thieves."
"We're not thieves!" The boy in the lead, who was about thirteen or fourteen years old, had been looking dejected, but he quickly retorted when he heard Hu Jiu's suspicion.
An Ge felt a pang of sympathy seeing their barely clothed state. The temperature outside was at least in the teens, and the children were shivering with cold; they were probably local beggars. Even if they really wanted to steal from the inn, she was prepared to turn a blind eye.
Afraid that An Ge wouldn't believe him, the boy mustered his courage and said, "We really didn't intend to steal anything. We just heard there are fairies here and wanted to come and see." After saying that, Xiao Chen lowered his head.
He and his younger siblings had taken a desperate gamble and ventured into the mountains, only to unexpectedly find the legendary Fairy Inn. Seeing that the people entering and leaving the inn were all wealthy and powerful, their initial courage immediately vanished.
Xiao Chen was afraid, afraid that the immortals would look at them like those nobles, as if they were filthy.
The person in front of him must be an immortal, Xiao Chen thought, but would an immortal really have pity on such insignificant beings as them?
An Ge was unaware of Xiao Chen's thoughts. Although she could not be described as compassionate, she was willing to lend a helping hand when she had the ability.
"There's still some food in the kitchen. Have something to eat first, and we can talk about other things after you've eaten."
“We won’t eat your food for free; we can work,” Xiao Chen said loudly.
An Ge shook her head and gestured for Hu Jiu to take the children to the kitchen. The oldest of these children was only thirteen or fourteen years old; she wasn't so heartless as to use child labor.
Inside the small house, several children swallowed hard as they looked at the delicious food in front of them.
"Brother Chen, can we really eat this?" Xiaoyue asked, enduring her hungry stomach.
Xiao Chen took a deep breath, handed the chopsticks to Xiao Yue, and said, "Let's listen to Fairy Sister and eat first. After we finish eating, we can help Fairy Sister with her work. We can't just eat her food for free."
The group had been holding back their hunger for a long time, and upon hearing Xiao Chen's words, they immediately began to wolf down their food.
"This is so delicious! I've never eaten anything so good in my life," Xizi said, her mouth full of food, her words muffled.
Xiao Chen nodded. Although his family was not wealthy, his grandfather had taken him to a grand restaurant on his birthday. He used to think that meal was the best he had ever had, but now he knew he was naive.
"No, it's not a matter of experience. Even the nobles in the capital might not have eaten it before," Xiao Chen thought to himself.
After everyone finished eating, they waited anxiously for the host's questions.
An Ge handed several thick coats she had bought from the mall to Xiao Chen, saying, "The weather is getting colder and colder. Here are some clothes for you to take." Without waiting for anyone's reaction, she turned and left.
Hu Jiu pursed his lips as he watched An Ge's decisive departure, waved for the others to leave, and quickened his pace to catch up.
Xiao Chen and his companions didn't have time to refuse, nor could they, as these were indeed things they desperately needed. He pulled a few people and kowtowed several times towards the inn, his eyes flickering, no longer filled with the gloom of despair.
