Chapter 66 Alone
After the attack ended, the city gates were opened.
"Why are you only retreating now? Quickly line up and wait for inspection one by one." The Qira battlefield guards, wearing protective suits, shouted at several people.
The group lined up and waited one by one for passage into the city ahead.
Which team are you from?
"The half-baked team reporting for duty, sir," Sun You reported to his superior in Qila City.
"Okay, let's put on the device and test it."
Just then, one of the instruments testing other people suddenly started beeping.
A gunshot rang out quickly, and Zhou Jiu saw the person with the equipment in front of her being shot dead. Her mood suddenly became inexplicably heavy.
Why kill him? Weren't they soldiers?
[The victims were killed because they were assimilated by the spiritual power of the alien beasts. Once assimilated, they forget who they are and become mere puppets of the beasts. This is why we continue to study spiritual power even today.]
[But why hasn't this been tested yet? Could it be that human society has been riddled with holes by these alien beasts?]
[You're overthinking it. Modern technology has advanced enough that most mechs have some form of mental defense, but current technology hasn't progressed to the point where they can withstand the mental barriers of level five alien beasts. They'll have to rely solely on their own mental strength. More importantly, advancements in medicine and the existence of mental power masters mean that if such a situation were to occur now, it could be completely reversed within a certain timeframe.]
Soon it was Zhou Jiu's turn, the last member of the half-baked team.
Suddenly, a "beep beep beep" sound rang out. Zhou Jiu moved instantly, quickly entered the mecha, and sped towards the outside of the city.
The beasts as enemies are a completely different matter from the entire city's army as enemies, and Zhou Jiu quickly made his decision.
The shot missed. The guards watched Zhou Jiu's actions indifferently, not pursuing him as he left the city. They simply recorded Zhou Jiu's existence—a fact that no longer seemed human—through the communication system and informed everyone.
"What's going on?" Sun You asked over the communicator.
"I don't know why it's making that noise. I'm guessing it might be something the last wave of anomalous beasts did," Zhou Jiu said, walking along the edge of the city wall, trying to stay as far away from the guards as possible.
[Was Zhou Jiu assimilated by the alien beast?]
Could it be the level 5 beast that Zhou Jiu encountered during the qualifying rounds?
[No, the mental power assimilated by the alien beast cannot connect to the Star Network. This is most likely a setting from the Kira War, or something like this happened before, so it was randomly assigned to Zhou Jiu.]
[Come on, the level 5 alien beast Zhou Jiu encountered a few days ago, while having the same simulation strength, was still virtual! What, do you think everyone goes out of their way to capture alien beasts and bring them into the Star Network to play house with you?]
[While I agree with the previous comment, this isn't child's play. Even if it's fake, it's still real battlefield data. Otherwise, why wouldn't Zhou Jiu, a humanoid mech capable of fighting alien beasts single-handedly, take down the guards? For her, people without armor are easier to deal with than alien beasts with hardened shells.]
"Hello, I'm very happy to hear the enthusiastic discussion from the viewers in the live stream. The data model for this Qira Battlefield was kindly sponsored by Junyi Internal Data. What exactly happened on that Qira Battlefield? And what will happen to Zhou Jiu, who is stranded and alone? Please continue watching!"
As darkness fell and dinner time approached, the number of viewers in the live stream gradually decreased. The live stream assistant continued to attract viewers, posing questions that puzzled everyone.
"The last wave of monsters was indeed unusual, but did you sense any mental intrusion during the fight?"
"No, I'm pretty sure. I have a guess that they attacked each of us separately. Could it be a test? And when this device went off during my test, could it be because they identified their target and tampered with the device I was working on?"
"Perhaps a high-level alien beast tampered with your mental power?" Lin Xiu also joined in the speculation.
Zhou Jiu sat in his chair, his gaze fixed on the forest in front of the screen, which was gradually losing its light. The overall environment was unusually quiet.
"Zhou Jiu, Zhou Jiu?" Not hearing a reply, Sun You kept calling out, staring at the small dot representing Zhou Jiu on the map.
"I was here. I was watching the woods when I sensed a spying on me, even stronger than the level-five beast I sensed last time."
"You mean Level 6?" Sun You asked, frowning.
“I’m not sure, Sun You. You study the testing equipment, fix it, and then go to your superior in the garrison and tell him that the equipment is malfunctioning. It’s been infiltrated. I suspect that the alien beast army has a supreme ruler and certain tactics. I’ll go and touch the places I sensed.” Zhou Jiu said.
"You're alone? Zhou Jiu, we're a team." Sun You emphasized, clearly already aware of Zhou Jiu's lone wolf nature.
"Don't bring your battlefield habits from the desolate planet here," Sun You said seriously, not having heard Zhou Jiu's reply.
Zhou Jiu's fingers flew across the keyboard. After a period of continuous attacks, he slowly replied while still attacking: "You know it's hard for me to multitask completely. I just encountered danger."
"You guys should get busy too, I bet you'll be busy for a while. I believe protecting the Kira border isn't just about fighting the alien beasts alongside the guards. Otherwise, how could a few more people possibly change the overall outcome of annihilation? Unless, there are other factors behind it all." The energy blade on the mech continued to reap the alien beasts while clearly stating his findings.
“Don’t worry, the worst that can happen is that we die on the StarNet, Youyou. You should have thought of this earlier. Why are you acting so strangely this time?” Zhou Jiu continued.
"Okay, be careful. I'll find a way to bring you back tomorrow and get a new machine."
"Understood." Zhou Jiu verbally agreed, and gradually walked into the forest.
My goodness, Zhou Jiu is like a tireless machine. She's been playing for so long, I'm already sleepy, but she's still so energetic.
[Is it because of your strong mental fortitude?]
[It's possible they were forced into it, with so many strange beasts.]
[I feel like she's now so precise, she'll only attempt one strike if she can get the chance, her accuracy is insane. I wish my mech pilot was this awesome, given how she's been forced to train.]
[If your mech pilot isn't awesome, why are you chasing after me?]
[I can't help it, the mecha is just too good-looking. I'm chasing after the mecha and the mecha pilot at the same time.]
[Got it, but why are you watching Zhou Jiu in the middle of the night instead of sleeping, and why aren't you following your favorite shows?]
Everyone else has rested, except for a few unlucky mech pilots who, like Zhou Jiu, were forced to leave the city. Looking around, Zhou Jiu's fighting style is more interesting; it's aesthetically pleasing.
