Chapter 10 Dictionary This is truly an unpleasant idea.
When Tarasco got closer, Catherine realized that he had pulled a dictionary out of his backpack.
Catherine widened her eyes, then couldn't help but laugh.
So that's how it is. He learned some of the language of Vilandel City thanks to this dictionary. But because the time was too short, he couldn't pronounce some of the more complex words.
She had previously wondered how a magical beast could possess such a talent for languages.
She reached for the dictionary, but couldn't budge it at first. She looked up at Tarasco and blinked. "Can't I look?"
“No…” Tarasco said hastily, and immediately let go.
Catherine quickly flipped through it and found that it was full of conversions between Warcraft and Vilandr. The dictionary contained some very simple and commonly used words and phrases; basically, if you learned this book, simple communication wouldn't be a problem.
Catherine couldn't help but marvel at the remarkable scholar who had written this dictionary.
Moreover, this dictionary is a useful tool for her. At least she can know what the monsters are saying—even among humans, who are at the bottom of the food chain, a human who can speak the language of monsters is more useful than an ordinary human.
Catherine was flipping through the dictionary when suddenly a hand pressed down on her, blocking her view.
Her gaze traveled up her pale skin and met a pair of disgruntled eyes.
When Tarasco saw her looking over, he raised his hand, almost touching Catherine's nose. Before Catherine could pull back, a strong smell of blood entered her nostrils, stopping her in her tracks.
Tarasco is injured, and this time the injury is serious, otherwise it wouldn't have taken so long for the wound to be so deep that the bone is still visible.
Her eyes widened: "How did you get so badly injured!"
Tarasco instinctively wanted to shake his head in rebuttal, but his head suddenly stopped moving. He then nodded forcefully, affirming Catherine's words. He even mimicked the expression of his prey before their death, softening his features.
Looking at his expression, Catherine felt that he seemed aggrieved, but not quite, and something just felt strange about him.
Neither of them realized that the prey's vulnerable expression before death is often a plea for mercy.
However, neither of them had seen it before, and neither of them knew about it, so neither of them noticed this little misunderstanding.
However, Catherine didn't pay much attention to this. She immediately went to find the nun's robe that had been put away earlier, then tore off several long strips and began to bandage Tarasco.
Fortunately, not too much blood seeped out, and the bandage was completed with just two strips of cloth.
Catherine looked at the remaining nun's robes; the remaining amount could only be used for two or three more bandages before it was completely unusable.
A thought inexplicably arose in her mind, as if this foreshadowed that she was drifting further and further away from her identity as a nun. Perhaps for a long time to come, she would have to live in the Devil's Forest.
Catherine frowned; this was certainly an unpleasant thought.
She quickly put it out of her mind, and seeing that Tarasco was in a good mood, she asked the question she most wanted to know: "Now can you tell me? Where was that human backpack found?"
The fact that the human had a dictionary in his backpack meant he came prepared. Although her purpose was still unknown, perhaps… she could rely on him to escape the Devil's Forest.
"Wolf...wolf..."
The following syllables were a bit of a tongue twister for Tarasco, and he tried several times but couldn't pronounce them all, but that was enough for Catherine to understand what he meant.
"You mean, the backpack was found in the wolf's den?"
Tarasco nodded, affirming Catherine's words.
Catherine's heart sank. If it was in a monster's cave, coupled with the crimson bloodstains on the backpack... she found it hard to convince herself that the human was still alive.
Does she really have no hope of leaving Devil Forest?
Catherine went through the thought several times, but finally decided that she had to go out and see for herself if she had the chance. What if hope was hidden in that cave?
But it was clearly impossible for her to leave Tarasco's cave on her own.
Catherine looked up at Tarasco; she still needed the alien spider to willingly lead her out of the cave. And if she wanted to get to the wolf's den, she would need him to guide her.
But not today. I've already said too much, and Tarasco already seems suspicious. If I bring up the matter of leaving the cave again now, he might start to overthink things.
After much deliberation, Catherine decided to put aside the idea for the time being and changed the subject.
-
For the next few days, Tarasco tried to finish off his prey as quickly as possible, then return to the cave and spend time with Catherine.
Human fingers were clearly much more dexterous than the claws of magical beasts, causing him to temporarily abandon his previous ordinary method. But after each session, looking at her completely numb and trembling hands, Catherine wasn't quite sure whether changing her method was a good thing or a bad thing for her.
It's already mid-September, and the lingering heat of August is finally dissipating, making the cave seem even colder and damper.
After Catherine caught two minor colds due to Tarasco's contact, he finally gave up on getting close to her when he was no longer emotionally invested.
Catherine felt completely drained by her recent illnesses and Tarasco's frequent visits. After he finished, she collapsed onto the bed and quickly fell into a deep sleep.
I woke up again because of a slight noise in the cave.
Catherine instinctively thought it was Tarasco returning. She didn't want to open her eyes, just mumbled a few words, then turned over, intending to sleep a little longer.
However, she soon realized that something was wrong.
The sound of movement followed a circular curve, unlike the usual noises from Tarasco. She woke with a start, opened her eyes, and cautiously peeked out, only to meet a pair of... sharp, bright yellow beastly eyes filled with excitement.
It was a huge silver python!
Before Catherine could react, she was dragged off the bed by a thick, hard tail and thrown into the air... She was thrown heavily onto the python's back.
Before Catherine could even rub her numb, aching tailbone from the fall, her "mount" suddenly began to move. She could only quickly bend down and hug the python's cold scales to avoid being slammed to the ground during its rapid run.
The bottom of the cave was all hard rocks, and the upper part of the python was several meters off the ground. If she fell at her current speed, Catherine couldn't be sure that her spine would be unharmed.
She turned her head and watched helplessly as the cave where she had lived for so long receded further and further away from her, before she began to have a real sense that she had been "abducted".
It all happened so fast that she didn't even have time to fully react.
Catherine's heart was in her throat. She wondered if Tarasco would come looking for her when he returned and discovered she was missing. After all, she wasn't that important to him; he could easily find someone else to "vent" on.
And if Tarasco hadn't intended to look for her, or hadn't found her...
Catherine looked down at the python below, her eyes gradually darkening. She needed to ascertain the purpose of this new predator's abduction of her.
...In fact, without Tarasco, she would never have imagined that she would have a second role besides being a food reserve.
The surrounding environment rushed past as the python moved swiftly. After spending half a month in the cave in Tarasco, this was the first time Catherine had left the cave and seen the outside world.
Although she knew she was heading towards another unknown danger, Catherine couldn't help but look around with longing.
Half a month has passed, and everything in Devil's Forest is still as dangerous, alluring, and ruthless as when I first entered.
Catherine lay on the python's back, her gaze fixed on a towering tree at the horizon. Beneath the tree, a magical beast that looked like a deer was quietly grazing with its neck drooping.
But before she could even get a good look at it, the "leaf" on the deer's head suddenly magnified hundreds of times and swallowed it whole. Startled by the sudden commotion, the birds in the forest scattered and flew through the canopy. However, fate seemed to have no mercy on them.
A group of giant bat monkeys, already ravenous, hid among the treetops. As the birds approached, they swiftly extended their sharp claws and pulled the unfortunate birds into their mouths. In the end, only a small fraction managed to escape, flying away in panic.
The seemingly harmless vegetation around you could transform into deadly predators in the next second. Above the tranquil tree canopy, countless hunters lie in wait for their prey to appear.
Every second in the Devil's Forest is filled with such bloody yet beautiful hunting scenes.
This python was clearly quite formidable; its scent alone was enough to suppress many hunters eager to prey on Catherine. No wonder it dared to venture directly into the giant alien spider's lair and steal its prey, marked with its "exclusive tag."
After running for an unknown amount of time, Catherine saw a cave rapidly approaching her in the distance. She knew they were probably close to their destination.
The python darted into the cave and stopped abruptly. Catherine felt nauseous from the sudden slowdown, but before she could recover from the dizziness, she saw the "specimens" hanging on the walls of the cave.
The limbs belonging to the same kind inside were so conspicuous that her heart sank uncontrollably the moment she saw them.
This python is clearly not an easy predator to get along with.
