Chapter 22 The Old Maid

Zhang Mei's heart-wrenching cry drew sighs from the villagers watching nearby.

Zhang Mei was an abandoned woman who couldn't have children. Now she was able to marry such a good man as Feng Nian, and her husband's family didn't care. Moreover, her mother-in-law was very generous, sending her gifts one after another. Any woman would cry like that.

"Oh my, that's a good cry! People should cry when they get married, crying brings good fortune." The village head's wife came out to warm up the atmosphere.

Everyone immediately echoed the old man's words.

At this moment, Lin Lizheng spoke up: "Fengnian's mother, I was a little worried when I heard that your family had married Zhang Mei. Zhang Mei is a good person, and it is our Lin family village that has wronged her. Now that you have let Fengnian marry her again and treat her so well, I am relieved. In the future, don't learn from that evil mother-in-law and torture your new daughter-in-law to death!"

Song Anxin nodded in agreement. The man here was quite broad-minded and did not have the typical male chauvinist attitude of disliking women for not being able to have children.

Song Anxin was very satisfied. Most of the villagers in Linjia Village were kind-hearted, which is why they remembered Zhang Mei's kindness. It was clear that the forest was well managed.

As soon as Lin Lizheng said this, all the villagers looked at Aunt Tietou. Aunt Tietou felt a little embarrassed when she saw everyone looking at her, but she still stubbornly said, "Why are you looking at me? I have never mistreated my daughter-in-law. Look at Liu Hong'er in my house, I treat her well and serve her good food and drink."

A woman chuckled and said, "That's because you can't beat them."

Liu Hong'er was the woman Lin Gangzi had married from outside. She was a shrew and resourceful woman, and because she was pregnant, she had Aunt Tietou completely under her thumb. She no longer dared to torment Aunt Tietou like she had to Zhang Mei before.

It really proves the saying that evil people will always be punished by other evil people.

Everyone covered their mouths and laughed when they heard this.

Since that was the truth, Aunt Tietou couldn't say anything and quickly left, citing family matters.

"Alright, the ceremony is over. Everyone's busy at home and in the fields, so go back and do what you need to do. Some families should also be careful, lest they get old and bedridden and their sons and daughters-in-law abandon them, then come to me to complain."

Sons and daughters-in-law should also fulfill their duties. Lin Li gave a good warning to some people who had open or covert conflicts with their sons and daughters-in-law.

Song Anxin inwardly gave this place a huge thumbs up!

Since there was no banquet, everyone took a large wedding cake and left happily.

Lin Lizheng received two extra wedding cakes because he was the officiant at the wedding. His wife also received some, as did their two grandchildren. Their faces were beaming with joy, but she said with some dissatisfaction, "Why did you say all that just now? You just made people dislike you for no reason."

Lin Lizheng said with a serious expression, "After all, I am the village head of Linjia Village. There are some things that should be said and some things that should be managed."

The village head's wife knew that her husband was a responsible man, and that was the reason she chose him in the first place, so she simply kept quiet about it.

After the villagers left, the house became much quieter. Sister-in-law Lin hadn't left yet; she was helping Song Anxin count the wedding gifts the villagers had given her.

Lin Erxi and Lin Fengshou sat on a stool to rest with the children, looking exhausted.

Song Anxin took out the remaining wedding cakes and shared them with everyone.

Lin Erxi picked it up and took a big bite, saying, "Preparing for a wedding is really tiring. I think I'd better not get married in the future."

Lin Fengshou, who was also eating nearby, said, "It's tiring, but I still want to get married. I don't want to be an old bachelor." He still remembered what his mother had said.

"Then, Sister Erxi, are you going to stay single and remain an old maid?" Lin Fengyao asked vaguely, his eyes wide and his mouth full of wedding cake.

"Hmm... Second Sister, you mustn't stay single, or I won't be able to eat such delicious wedding cakes," Lin Dongzi said, his lips smeared with the sugar from the wedding cakes.

"Hey, you two! Who are you calling an old maid? And you, Lin Dongzi, you heartless bastard! I'm not even worth as much as a wedding cake! I'll teach you a lesson!" He said, and was about to go and playfully hit Lin Fengyao and Lin Dongzi.

Seeing this, Lin Fengyao and Lin Dongzi quickly hid behind Lin Fenghe, who was quietly eating wedding cakes closest to them, and didn't forget to call out:

"Ah, Third Brother, save me!"

"Brother Fenghe, save me!"

Before long, the group started making a ruckus, and the courtyard was filled with laughter.

Song Anxin and Sister-in-law Lin just watched them and smiled. Song Anxin thought to herself, "It's so good to be young!"

"Sister-in-law, I've counted them for you. There are forty chicken eggs, twenty duck eggs, some coarse cloth scraps, five or six bowls, and so on. Oh, and the men in my family also made a few chairs for you, which are all here as well."

Song Anxin nodded. Brother Lin had learned a little carpentry when he was young, and these chairs were very well made. It was time to replace those old, broken stools at home.

She knew that fifteen chicken eggs and five duck eggs among them were brought by the eldest sister-in-law of the family. It could be said that the eldest brother and sister-in-law had secretly contributed a lot to Lin Fengnian's wedding.

Song Anxin took out the other four wedding cakes that had been put away: "Sister-in-law, take these home."

"Oh dear, you can't just take it and eat it all at once. Take it back and keep it for your own family to eat." Sister-in-law Lin quickly pushed it back.

Song Anxin threw the bowl into her arms: "This was originally prepared for your family. We have more at home. If you don't accept it, I'll have to let you stay at my house for lunch."

Sister-in-law Lin came over early in the morning and helped her family all morning without even preparing a banquet for them. Song Anxin felt quite embarrassed, but unfortunately, her family was too poor to prepare a proper feast, so she could only bring a few wedding cakes as a token of her goodwill.

Upon hearing this, Sister-in-law Lin did not refuse, fearing that her sister-in-law would invite them to stay for another meal, as they already felt bad for having eaten such a good meal that morning.

Brother Lin had already gone back to work in the fields, so she called out, "Erxi and Dongzi, stop fooling around, we should go back too."

Lin Erxi and Dongzi responded and quickly went back with their mother.

After Sister-in-law Lin and the others left, Song Anxin instructed her sons to put the items away properly. The scraps of cloth were given to Lin Fengnian and Zhang Mei. Zhang Mei initially refused to accept them, but Song Anxin made a strong statement before she finally did.

After a flurry of activity, it was almost noon. Song Anxin started cooking rice, white rice, which she loved. Zhang Mei came out of the house and insisted that Song Anxin cook it herself.

Seeing that she couldn't persuade her otherwise, Song Anxin said, "You're the bride today, so take a day off. After today, I'll go with you, okay?"

Hearing Song Anxin say this, Zhang Mei finally agreed to leave. Song Anxin was puzzled. Why did this person love working so much? She wanted to lie down and relax. But she couldn't. She not only had to manage the household, but also had to find ways to make money.
