The next morning, Song Anxin woke up to find it was raining, though only a light drizzle. They couldn't go mushroom picking that day, so she and the younger children in her family cleaned up the mushrooms they had picked the day before and prepared to cultivate the spawn.
While Song Anxin was leading everyone in their work, Lin Erxi brought two more wooden basins. Song Anxin was somewhat impressed by the farmers' efficiency; they hadn't rested at all.
After seeing Song Anxin's demonstration yesterday, several of the family members have become proficient in cultivating the bacteria themselves, especially Lin Fengnian, who is even better at it than her.
The rain made Lin Fengnian's face look much more relaxed, but the rain stopped before noon, the weather cleared up, and the earth was soon baked hot.
Lin Fengnian looked up at the sky and said, "I just hope it will rain a little more tomorrow. But this little rain won't be enough for the rice to drink."
Song Anxin stood to the side, unsure of what to say. She wasn't sure if it would rain tomorrow either. Then, Sister-in-law Lin walked in from the courtyard gate, carrying a basket. From a distance, it was unclear what was inside.
"Sister-in-law, Fengnian and the others are all here. I heard from Fengshou that your family is going to start a business selling duck eggs starting tomorrow. Although I don't know anything about business, it's still an extra way to make a living compared to toiling in the fields."
"Your sister-in-law supports you too. I brought over the eggs my ducks laid these past few days. Are you going to accept them today?" Sister-in-law Lin said.
Song Anxin was surprised that Sister-in-law Lin would be so supportive. Most farmers prefer stability and at most embroider a few handkerchiefs to sell in the county. Few dare to invest money in business. She quickly took the basket of duck eggs and said, "Thank you for your support, Sister-in-law."
Song Anxin counted that there were ten duck eggs in total, which was twenty coins. He immediately gave them to Sister-in-law Lin. In business, credit is important. Only when money is exchanged for goods will people feel at ease and sell to you again next time.
Sister-in-law Lin was very happy to receive the money, but then she pouted and said, "Some of the shallow women in the village said that you would never actually pay money to buy duck eggs, and that it would be safer to sell them in the county. I'll go and check for them whether this is real money." With that, she turned and left.
Song Anxin chuckled as she watched Sister-in-law Lin's hurried figure disappear into the distance. "I said we'd only be collecting duck eggs tomorrow, so why did Sister-in-law Lin bring them over today?" she said. "It turns out Sister-in-law Lin wanted to prove to the villagers that her family was genuinely running a business."
With such a supportive sister-in-law, Song Anxin felt that her future entrepreneurial path was becoming more and more promising.
But I always feel like I've forgotten something.
When it was lunchtime, Song Anxin saw two plates of stir-fried wild vegetables and mushrooms at home and remembered that she had forgotten to borrow vegetable seeds from Sister-in-law Lin. The original owner of this body was lazy. Every household in the village grew vegetables, but she was lazy and didn't. As a result, at least other families had vegetables they grew themselves, while she could only eat wild vegetables every day.
Last night, Sister-in-law Lin brought over some vegetables from her home. She's been here for so long and this is the first time she's eaten vegetables other than wild greens.
So Song Anxin instructed Lin Fengnian and Fengshou to cultivate a vegetable garden in front of and behind the house, while she went to Lin's sister-in-law's house to borrow seeds. The seeds were very common, such as green vegetables, eggplants, green beans, radishes, and celery.
Song Anxin then planned out the area for each vegetable plot, sowed the seeds and watered them. They would sprout in about a week, and the first batch of vegetables could be harvested a month later.
After finishing these tasks, Song Anxin took her sons up the mountain to pick mushrooms, along with Lin Erxi and Lin Dongzi.
Last night, after Lin Fengyao showed off how he caught the rabbit, the two men's eyes lit up. They couldn't believe that they had caught the rabbit so easily and insisted on trying it together today.
The group went up the mountain in a grand procession and began to divide the work. Lin Fengyao, Lin Erxi, Dongzi and a few others made traps to catch rabbits, while Lin Fengnian and Lin Fengshou chopped firewood first and then helped Song Anxin and Lin Fenghe pick mushrooms.
Two hours later, the large bamboo baskets on the backs of Song Anxin and her three sons were already full, and Song Anxin could hardly carry them anymore, falling behind her three sons.
Lin Fenghe turned around and walked to her side, saying, "Mother, you put it there, I'll take it."
Song Anxin shook her head and refused. Lin Fenghe's own basket was not light either, so how could she let him carry it as well?
Lin Fengshou walked over, took the basket from his mother's back, put it on his own body, and said, "Mother, let me carry it. Let my older brother carry the firewood down the mountain."
Lin Fengnian was carrying two loads of firewood on his shoulders, and a large basket of mushrooms on his back. Song Anxin couldn't bear to see him like that, so she took a small portion of the firewood off the shoulder and carried it herself.
Just then, Lin Erxi, Dongzi, and Lin Fengyao came running towards them. Lin Erxi was carrying two rabbits, Lin Fengyao was carrying two rabbits, and Dongzi was carrying one rabbit.
Good heavens, did they destroy the rabbit's burrow?
Lin Erxi ran quickly to Song Anxin, his face flushed with excitement, and exclaimed, "Second Aunt, look, look! We caught so many rabbits! Hahaha..."
Lin Erxi almost shoved the two rabbits in her hands into Song Anxin's face. Song Anxin quickly took two steps back and said, "I saw it. Your second aunt isn't blind. But if you catch rabbits like this, I'm afraid the rabbits won't fall for it anymore."
Lin Erxi scratched his head sheepishly and said, "I didn't expect this method to work so well, so I accidentally got a little greedy."
Lin Fengyao and Lin Dongzi also walked up to her. Lin Fengyao smacked his lips and looked at the two rabbits in his hands with a drooling expression.
He asked, "Mom, can we eat rabbit again tonight?"
"Second Aunt, your rabbit is delicious. Can you cook mine at your house?" Lin Dongzi said, slurping his saliva.
Lin Dongzi is only eight years old, but due to long-term malnutrition and the fact that boys develop later, he looks like a six-year-old child, which is very cute.
How could Song Anxin refuse such a cute little person's request? She smiled and said, "Of course! Today, Mom and Second Aunt will make you a different kind of rabbit meat. I guarantee it will be even better than the last one!"
"Wow, Auntie, you're amazing!"
"Mom, you're so good to me!"
The two little ones, Lin Fengyao and Lin Dongzi, happily held hands and spun around.
Upon hearing that it would taste even better than last time, the group wondered what kind of delicious food it must be, and began to salivate.
Lin Erxi and Lin Fengshou couldn't hold back any longer: "Mother/Second Aunt, let's hurry down the mountain and make rabbit meat!"
Song Anxin and her group descended the mountain in a grand procession, each carrying spoils of war and beaming with joy.
Sister-in-law Lin saw them from afar at the gate of her yard and exclaimed in surprise, "Oh my! I didn't expect you to actually catch rabbits, and so many of them! Look how shiny and healthy these rabbits are!"
