Shen Hui rarely jokes, so this must be true.
The thought of pulling Gu Zhendong and calling him "son" last night gave Mingze a terrible headache. How was he supposed to face Gu Zhendong and his family after this?
The couple had just woken up when the doorbell rang.
The couple looked at each other and shook their heads, indicating they didn't know who had come knocking on the door so early in the morning.
"Go wash up first!"
Shen Hui pushed Mingze into the bathroom, then turned around and went outside to open the door.
Upon seeing Gu Zhendong standing at the door, Shen Hui was surprised. She glanced behind him but did not see the familiar figure.
Gu Zhendong knew who she was looking for, so he explained, "Lu Huan had class today, so she didn't come with me!"
Shen Hui wanted to refute that she had not sought out Lu Huan, but she could not follow her heart, so she smiled awkwardly and hurriedly welcomed Gu Zhendong in to sit down.
"It must be cold outside, drink some hot water to warm yourself up!"
Shen Hui poured him a cup of hot water, her heart filled with doubt, wondering what Gu Zhendong had come over so early in the morning for.
After washing up and changing into clean clothes, Mingze looked completely different from how he had been drunk and unable to recognize people the night before.
Mingze saw Gu Zhendong and gave an awkward laugh, "Haha, what brings you here?"
Although he didn't remember the scene of him pulling someone else to call him his son last night, it didn't mean that Gu Zhendong had forgotten it either. Judging from Shen Hui's description of the situation last night, Gu Zhendong's expression didn't seem very good.
He could understand that; after all, anyone would feel a little aggrieved if someone suddenly called them "son."
Gu Zhendong glanced at Mingze, then calmly called him "Second Uncle." He thought to himself that he finally knew who Lu Huan inherited his drinking capacity from.
They truly are father and daughter; not only do they have the same alcohol tolerance, but they're also the same when they're drunk.
Mingze felt a little embarrassed to be called "Second Uncle," so he chuckled awkwardly and changed the subject, "What brings you here so early in the morning?"
The Gu and Ming families often interacted, but that didn't mean they met frequently.
Mingze and his wife spend more time abroad and less time in China, let alone meeting with the younger generation.
Mingze had a deep impression of Gu Zhendong because the boy had been in poor health in his early years, which caused the Gu family a lot of worry. They even worried that Gu Zhendong might die one day. Therefore, before meeting Gu Zhendong this year, Mingze always thought that the boy was not in good health and was bedridden as rumored.
However, Gu Zhendong seemed to be in good health and didn't appear to be in any danger.
"There are some important things I need to say!"
They don't usually interact much, so it must be work-related. Shen Hui was just about to find an excuse for them to talk alone when Gu Zhendong turned to look at her. "Second Aunt, this matter is also related to you. Please sit down!"
Shen Hui paused for a moment, then sat down next to Mingze and asked, "What is it?"
Gu Zhendong took out a brown paper file bag from his bag. "Second Uncle and Second Aunt, I don't want to reopen old wounds, but I want to investigate something from back then, about the early death of your child. I want to ask how much you still remember about what happened back then?"
The couple were taken aback, neither of them expecting that Gu Zhendong had come to see them for this matter.
More than 20 years have passed since this incident, and it remains a painful memory for the couple. They never even talk about it with each other. However, Gu Zhendong asked about it.
What puzzled the couple even more was why Gu Zhendong would bring up things from the past.
Mingze spoke first, "Why would you ask about this?"
Gu Zhendong opened the manila envelope. “I know you might not believe this right now, but it’s all true. You can investigate it yourselves if you don’t believe me.”
As he spoke, he handed the report to the two men, saying, "You two can take a look."
Mingze picked it up and saw that it was a paternity test, specifically a paternity test between them and Lu Huan, which clearly showed that Lu Huan was their daughter.
How is that possible!
The couple looked up at Gu Zhendong in shock, and Mingze said, "This is impossible!"
“It does seem impossible, but the evidence is right here. As I said, if you don’t believe me, you can get it tested yourself. I believe the results will be the same.” Gu Zhendong said calmly, “Besides, I wouldn’t have come to you two without being 100% certain.”
At first, he didn't believe the paternity test results and had Kong Xun redo it several times, but the results were always the same.
In addition to the few clues they found, Gu Zhendong came to find them.
When Shen Hui saw the paternity test report, she was reminded of the torment she had experienced recently. Every time she closed her eyes, she would see Lu Huan calling her "Mom" again and again. At that time, she thought she was obsessed and that she was having an unrealistic dream because she was missing a child.
Although Lu Huan is cute and adorable, how could she possibly be her daughter?
After she dismissed the idea, someone suddenly came up to her and told her that Lu Huan was her daughter. Her hard-won composure crumbled completely, and Shen Hui became incoherent, "How could Huanhuan be our child... Our child is long gone..."
She didn't even get enough of looking at the child she had lost before she left them far away.
Before she knew it, Shen Hui’s eyes were filled with tears. If Lu Huan was their child, then who was the child who died?
What has caused them sadness and grief all these years?
"Second Aunt, I know you don't believe me, but it's all true. I have no reason to lie to you!"
Gu Zhendong took out another photo from the file folder. "I wonder if you guys remember this woman?"
The photo in his hand is of Li Lan.
The couple examined the photo carefully and shook their heads, indicating they did not recognize the person in the picture.
"It was her who took your child!"
Gu Zhendong shared the clues he had uncovered with them, and also added some of his own deductions about the incident from back then.
Mingze and Shen Hui were both shocked and furious upon hearing this.
Neither of them knew Li Lan, yet this vicious woman had caused them to lose their daughter for so many years.
Shen Hui cried harder and harder, getting angrier the more she cried. "Where is this Li Lan? I'm going to find her and demand an explanation!"
With Pang Zhe watching over Li Lan, she won't be able to escape anytime soon.
Gu Zhendong calmed them down, "By the way, she doesn't know about this yet. If you two want to accept her as your daughter, let's sit down and talk about it properly sometime. If you can't accept her, then it's best not to let her know about this!"
The reason he came to Lu Huan's door without telling her first was twofold: first, he didn't want to disappoint her, and second, he wanted to give Lu Huan a surprise.
She already liked Mingze and Shen Hui very much, and she would definitely be happy if she knew that they were her parents.
Just as Shen Hui was about to say something like, "If Lu Huan really is our daughter, how could I possibly disown her?", Mingze grabbed her wrist and said to Gu Zhendong, "Thank you for telling us this, but we still need to investigate this matter thoroughly!"
They believed Gu Zhendong's words; he had no reason to deceive them. However, they also needed some time to investigate what happened back then and to accept the truth.
Lu Huan and the others all liked her and hoped they could have such a lovely daughter, but they were also afraid that it would be another misunderstanding and both sides would be disappointed.
After Gu Zhendong left, the couple fell into a silence.
Shen Hui had an accident back then, giving birth prematurely. Before she could even see what her child looked like, she suddenly suffered a massive hemorrhage and was rushed to the emergency room for surgery.
Mingze stayed at the door of the emergency room the whole time, without even glancing at his daughter.
After the surgery, Shen Hui was weak. The first thing she wanted to do after waking up was to see their daughter.
The baby was very small at the time. They thought that Shen Hui was probably born prematurely, and it was normal for a baby to be small at birth. They thought that if they took good care of the baby for a while, it would grow up to be healthy.
At that time, they were both full of expectations for a happy life as a family of three in the future. Little did they know that their child had already been taken away and replaced with someone else's child.
Twenty years have passed, and they have accepted the fact that they have no children. But now Gu Zhendong comes to tell them that their daughter is not only alive, but also so lovely and well-behaved. The couple has truly met her.
No wonder they were so affectionate towards the child when they first met.
Some things are preordained; even if you don't know your relationship with someone, you can feel it through blood ties.
Mingze grasped Shen Hui's hand. "Let me check first, don't worry!"
Shen Hui nodded, suppressing a sob, "I just really want to see Huanhuan!"
Even though they had just met last night, I now feel an urge to rush over and hug her daughter.
Her feelings before yesterday were completely different from now. Shen Hui had always regarded Lu Huan as half a daughter, and now that she knew the truth, she was both happy and excited.
Mingze's investigation revealed exactly the same information as that given to him by Gu Zhendong. During this time, he also met with Li Lan.
Li Lan took the money from Pang Zhe, intending to run away with her daughter, but Pang Zhe kept an eye on her and she couldn't go anywhere.
Li Lan was at home with nothing to do when someone came to visit.
When Li Lan saw that it was Pang Zhe standing at the door, she had no choice but to open it.
After opening the door, I mustered my courage and asked, "Mr. Pang, what brings you here?"
Pang Zhe said with a stern face, "Get in the car with me, someone wants to see you!"
When Li Lan heard the word "someone," the first person she thought of was Gu Zhendong, who had a gloomy face and was Lu Huan's husband.
She felt a jolt of fear and instinctively wanted to refuse, but after meeting Pang Zhe's cold gaze, she realized that she had no chance of refusing at all.
She had no choice but to bite the bullet and get into the car with Pang Zhe. She was restless the whole way, constantly stealing glances at Pang Zhe, wanting to ask but not daring to.
Upon entering the private room, Li Lan hesitated to go in. She turned to Pang Zhe and asked, "Mr. Pang, may I ask what this is about?"
Pang Zhe, expressionless, nudged Li Lan's shoulder. "Go inside. Stop talking nonsense."
Li Lan staggered into the private room, turned around to look at Gu Zhendong and Mingze sitting inside, her eyes widened instantly, she took several steps back in fear, and turned to run away.
