Chapter 1

July was the height of summer, and cicadas chirped incessantly outside the window. Shi Mingyue felt as if her entire body was soaked in sweat, and no matter how she moved, she felt uncomfortable.

She slowly opened her eyes, and what caught her eye was a light pink gauze curtain, followed by a rosewood flower stand, on which were placed her favorite little gadgets, straw grasshoppers, clay figurines, and so on.

This seems to be her room, but she has been away from home for ten years...

The room was dim, a thin ray of light filtering through the tall, narrow window. A vine of creeping ivy passed by the window, and Shi Mingyue's eyes widened, fixed on the few leaves. That was life, the vine's vibrant vitality. But she no longer had any life. Lying in bed, she breathed more in than out, fearing she wouldn't make it through the night.

She suddenly heard the laughter of a child. It was the man's three-year-old son, representing the woman's presence. The next moment, someone pushed open the door, and the heavy air of death that washed over them made them frown. A beautiful young woman, holding the three-year-old child by the hand, walked slowly in with a contented smile on her face. "Sister, I've brought Zilong to see you."

Shi Mingyue wanted to turn around, but she no longer had the strength to move. Tang Nuan had brought her son to see her simply to show off and piss her off to death.

Qin Zilong was just a naive three-year-old. He felt the room was freezing cold, and the woman lying on the bed looked lifeless, making him uncomfortable. He started clamoring to leave, and Tang Nuan let go, letting the maid take him away.

Shi Mingyue and Tang Nuan were the only ones left in the room. Seeing Shi Mingyue's haggard, pale face, Tang Nuan let out a cruel smile. "I'm afraid Sister is dying. Wu Tan invaded, and my husband left home last night. Speaking of the Wu Tan nation, they're truly despicable, smashing, looting, and plundering along the border. I heard your current state is caused by Wu Tan's spies."

Indeed, Shi Mingyue's shattered remains were the remains of a Wutan spy who had infiltrated Xinzhou City five years ago to gather military intelligence and had sneaked into the man's study. That night, the man wasn't home, but Shi Mingyue, having forgotten something, went to the study, where she happened to run into the spy. The spy struck first, delivering a powerful kick to her abdomen, wiping out her two-month pregnancy. She was also left with a broken body, unable to conceive again...

When Shi Mingyue thought of this, she felt extremely painful. She hated Wu Tan for destroying everything for her.

"Sister, you absolutely shouldn't have gone to the study that night. If you hadn't gone, you wouldn't have met that spy. How could you have killed the baby in your belly and turned yourself into a hen that can't lay eggs?" Tang Nuan said with a sigh.

Shi Mingyue glared at her, thinking, "Tang Nuan, you can't spit out ivory from a dog's mouth. Tang Nuan just wants to piss her off quickly. What's the point of arguing with her? She won't make it through the night after all."

Tang Nuan smiled: "But fortunately, my sister couldn't get pregnant, so my husband married me. Otherwise, with my husband's deep love for you, why would he take a concubine?"

Indeed, it was precisely because she couldn't get pregnant and knew she couldn't let the Qin family's lineage be cut short that she took the initiative to persuade the man to take a concubine. A few months later, the man brought back a pitiful orphan girl, Tang Nuan.

"I heard that sister was promised to the eldest prince, but eloped with my husband instead. What a deep love they had. I'm so envious." Tang Nuan gritted her teeth. She was jealous of Shi Mingyue and her husband's past. Whenever she thought of it, she felt hatred itch. But now that her husband only loved her and Zilong, she smiled even more happily. "When I first entered the mansion, I saw how caring my husband was for you. I really envied you. But after I became pregnant with Zilong, my husband rarely visited me anymore."

Shi Mingyue didn't want to listen to Tang Nuan's nonsense anymore. She spoke in a hoarse voice: "You have successfully won Qin Zheng's heart. You won, you can go away." She didn't care, she didn't care about anything, she just hated herself for being blind and falling for such a man.

Tang Nuan sighed and said, "Actually, the main reason I came to see you today was to say sorry to you."

Shi Mingyue looked at her quietly, wondering what else could come out of her dog-like mouth.

Tang Nuan also looked at her quietly and said, "Actually, I was the spy who sneaked into the Qin Mansion at night. I thought about it for a long time and still felt that I couldn't hide it from my sister. I can't let you die without understanding."

Shi Mingyue never expected Tang Nuan to say such words. She was stunned for a long time, and then she vomited a mouthful of blood: "...Tang Nuan, you are so vicious!" She suddenly understood Tang Nuan's real intention of coming to see her today. Tang Nuan wanted her to die with her eyes open and not rest in peace.

Tang Nuan said smugly, "Haven't you heard that a wasp's sting is as vicious as a woman's? You deserve it. It's your bad luck to run into me."

Shi Mingyue began to cough, coughing furiously, her face flushing crimson. Tang Nuan was so vicious, so vicious, she hated her so much. But what else could she do at this moment? Her coughing subsided, leaving only exhalation, not inhalation.

She would never close her eyes in death. She would never close her eyes in death! She had escaped her marriage for Qin Zheng and eloped with him to the Western Frontier. For ten years, she had been too ashamed to go back to see her parents and brothers. She had been so wrong. She regretted it so much. If there was an afterlife, if... Shi Mingyue's vision was getting blurry. Qin Zheng hadn't come.

When he eloped with her that year, he said he would love her and take care of her for the rest of her life.

Unfortunately, they are all fake.

At this moment, Shi Mingyue looked around in disbelief. This was her room, and she was still in her boudoir at home in the capital!

She slowly walked to the mirror and what caught her eye was her youthful, delicate face at sixteen, her lush, dark hair cascading down her cheeks. She remembered that after ten years of wasting time at the border, her skin had long since deteriorated.

"Miss, are you up?" A girl's clear voice came from outside the door.

Shi Mingyue recognized the voice of the person coming. It was her maid Hongyin. After a pause, she tried to calm her voice and said, "I'm up."
