Chapter 16

"Are we still going to Lingzhou today?"

Fu Baiheng and his team went back to the government office, and Shi Mingyue and others also returned to the inn, so they were now facing the above-mentioned problem. Shi Mingyue didn't want to go to Lingzhou for the time being. The case in Taizhou had completely aroused her curiosity. She wanted to stay and wait for the case to be solved, but she had to ask Fu Yueli and Lu Lingyan for their opinions.

"Not going for now," Fu Yueli said.

Lu Lingyan also nodded to indicate that he would not go, and could not help asking the two: "Do you think Xu Ziling is a suspect?" He felt that Xu Ziling looked aloof and arrogant, and she was a doctor. As the saying goes, a doctor has a kind heart, so how could she do such a thing.

Shi Mingyue said, "Everything must be based on evidence. If there is evidence, we can convict her. If there is no evidence, we cannot call her a suspect."

"You're right." After Lu Lingyan finished speaking, he left their room thoughtfully.

Shi Mingyue guessed he was still worried about Xu Ziling. This case was indeed complicated. All she could do was wait and see what Qin Zheng and the others would find next. Turning around, she saw Fu Yueli looking at her. Her heartbeat quickened as she met his white pupils. Fu Yueli's pupils were so deep and mysterious that it was hard to ignore them.

"When you came to pick me up this morning, you asked me how the past seven days were, but I forgot to ask you how you were doing?" Fu Yueli asked softly.

Shi Mingyue paused and said gently, "I'm fine. I've been reading and painting in my room for the past seven days." She suddenly remembered the jealous storm that morning and wondered if she should explain it to Fu Yueli. But how to start was a problem. She couldn't just say, "There's nothing between me and Lu Lingyan. Please don't misunderstand me." The more she thought about it, the more entangled she became, and her emotions showed on her face.

"I don't care about what happened this morning. You don't need to worry about it." Fu Yueli saw what she was thinking and explained.

Shi Mingyue was startled, and hummed softly, and said nothing more.

"Miss?"

Hongyin's voice came from outside the door. Shi Mingyue hurried to open the door. Hongyin said to her with a bitter face: "Miss, I made a mistake in embroidery again. Please help me correct it."

Hongyin had been busy these past few days, having asked someone to buy her a silk handkerchief to embroider with peonies. Peonies, with their clusters of petals, were often double-petaled, making them laborious to embroider, and mistakes were easy to make without careful attention. Shi Mingyue was naturally happy to help her correct the pattern, and after a word with Fu Yueli, she followed Hongyin out.

As soon as she left, Fu Yueli was alone again. Bored, he stood up and saw a book on the bedside cabinet with several sheets of drawing paper underneath. He picked them up and went to the table to read. Shi Mingyue had been reading a popular romance novel "Yulouchun" these days. It tells the tragic love story of Su Yulou, a prostitute who lived in the entertainment industry, and Pei Jun, a son of an official. Fu Yueli flipped through a few pages, frowning the whole time. Pei Jun, who only knew about love and romance, was used to saying sweet words to deceive Su Yulou. He said things like redeeming her freedom and marrying her, but they were all lies. His parents later killed Su Yulou, and he only shed a few crocodile tears. In the end, he still obeyed his parents' arrangement and married someone else. It was a pity that Su Yulou was still thinking about the man who was so cruel and ungrateful to her until her death.

Fu Yueli despised men like Pei Jun the most. He couldn't even protect the woman he loved, yet he pretended to be deeply affectionate and ended up marrying and having children. What a disgusting thing he did. He thought that when Shi Mingyue came back later, he would definitely tell her not to read such a disgusting book again.

Putting the book aside, he began to carefully examine Shi Mingyue's paintings. The first painting showed a delicate woman leaning against a railing, her eyes filled with sorrow. Judging from her appearance and clothing, could it be Su Yulou from "Yulouchun"? He then looked at the second painting, which was a majestic river on the grassland. It was the Peacock River in Xinzhou, a scene Fu Yueli had never seen before. After a quick glance, he opened the third painting. He was stunned. The painting was actually of Lu Lingyan, standing sideways with a sword in his arms. He had a handsome face, and the delicate brushstrokes portrayed his high spirits.

There was a long silence. When Fu Yueli reacted, he had already crumpled the drawing paper into a ball.

What is he doing? Fu Yueli hurriedly unfolded the drawing paper, desperately trying to make it smooth again, but no matter what he did, the paper remained wrinkled. Finally, he lost his patience, picked up the kettle beside him, and slowly poured the water from the long spout.

If it gets wet, Mingyue won’t notice it.

A thin stream of water flowed down, quickly soaking the drawing paper. Fu Yueli felt that his consciousness was no longer clear at this moment. What on earth was he doing?

Hearing footsteps at the door, he calmly let go of the handle of the kettle. The kettle slammed onto the table with a thud and then rolled to the ground. The sound of broken porcelain was extremely piercing. When he faced Shi Mingyue who rushed in at the sound, he showed an expression of surprise and self-blame.

"I, I accidentally, I'm sorry, I got your painting wet..."

Shi Mingyue ran to his side, but without even glancing at the paintings, she anxiously asked, "Are you okay?"

Fu Yueli shook her head in shock: "I'm not hurt, I just didn't hold it firmly, I'm sorry."

Seeing that he was indeed unharmed, Shi Mingyue felt relieved, "It's okay, just a few drawings." As she spoke, she lowered her head and couldn't help but lift up the wet paper with Lu Lingyan's drawing on it.

Fu Yueli saw clearly the painting below Lu Lingyan. Although it was soaked, the ink on it had not spread too much, enough for him to recognize the person in it.

The painting was of him, for his eyes were white, not dotted with ink. He was holding a straw grasshopper and admiring it. It was a scene that had actually happened: the first time he had visited Shi Mingyue's room, he had stood by the flower stand, looking at the little gadgets she had made.

Shi Mingyue put the painting down. Although it was a pity, she could still paint again. She was about to go find Hongyin to clean up the mess on the floor, but Fu Yueli grabbed her sleeve.
