Chapter 20

"Thanks to Doctor Xu for his miraculous healing skills! Otherwise, how could I see the light again? I thought the herbal eye compresses I applied for the first seven days were ineffective, but after a nap, I suddenly could see again. Thank you, Doctor Xu!" Fu Yueli walked up to Xu Ziling and bowed to express his gratitude.

Faced with this sudden thank you, Xu Ziling was surprised but didn't show it too much. She just thought Fu Yueli was really interesting. She also said modestly, "It's my duty to treat illnesses and save lives. Mr. Fu, there's no need to be so polite. But I just found out today that you are the brother of the Second Prince, so you must be the First Prince."

Fu Yueli smiled without saying anything, and looked at Fu Baiheng again. Fu Baiheng's mood is extremely complicated now. Back then, his father summoned doctors from all over the country to treat Fu Yueli's eyes. Those famous doctors, including Xu Ziling's father, were helpless. Unexpectedly, Xu Ziling actually cured his eyes. He was happy that Xu Ziling had profound medical skills, but he was worried that she actually cured Fu Yueli's eyes. Everyone knows that Fu Yueli is the eldest son. If he had not been born blind, he would have been made the prince on the second day of his birth. Now that his eyes are cured, there is one more competitor for the position of prince. How can Fu Baiheng not be anxious? Fortunately, Fu Yueli has not been trained to be a crown prince since he was a child. His moral character and ability are not enough to be made the prince. He still has a chance.

"Congratulations, big brother." Fu Baiheng spoke sincerely.

Fu Yueli smiled and said, "I really have to thank Divine Doctor Xu. However, when I went to Medicine Valley to look for the Divine Doctor, I heard from Tong Di that the Divine Doctor had come to the Inn. Did my second brother invite the Divine Doctor because of a previous case?"

Fu Baiheng said, "That's right. After talking with Doctor Xu, I finally understood the whole story of the case."

Fu Yueli said, "What exactly is going on? I only heard that Du Ruzhen was arrested, but why did he imprison so many people?" The question he asked was also what Shi Mingyue and Lu Lingyan were curious about.

Fu Baiheng invited everyone to sit down before he began to recount the entire case. "Du Ruzhen's kidneys were failing, and he wasn't going to live long. The only way to prolong his life was to get a kidney transplant, so he found Doctor Xu and asked her to donate. But a kidney transplant isn't something you can just anyone; you have to find someone who's suitable in every way, and that person has to be willing. Doctor Xu wasn't willing to help, so Du Ruzhen threatened to bring out the late Dr. Xu, threatening to have his corpse whipped if he refused. Du Ruzhen was so mad that he captured many young men and women and imprisoned them in a cave, hoping to find a suitable kidney donor. Fortunately, God saw through his will, and none of those people were suitable, so he didn't commit any more sins."

Fu Yueli and the others were shocked by the truth of the case. A kidney transplant was truly shocking. However, Shi Mingyue began to doubt Fu Baiheng's words. If Xu Ziling was forced, why did he brutally murder Du Ruzhen in his previous life? Xu Ziling must have had a grudge against Du Ruzhen. Fu Baiheng's explanation was merely an excuse for Xu Ziling. There was more to the case.

Xu Ziling revealed a look of regret and guilt at the right moment. Seeing this, Fu Yueli could only comfort her: "Divine Doctor Xu is a filial daughter. She was only forced to do what she did because of Du Ruzhen's threats. Besides, those people were not injured or killed. There is no need to blame yourself." He then asked Fu Baiheng worriedly: "Second brother, I don't understand legal principles, but you are well versed in legal principles. Will Divine Doctor Xu be okay?"

Fu Baiheng smiled faintly: "It is reasonable and logical that Doctor Xu will be fine, don't worry, big brother."

Fu Yueli felt relieved and chatted with Fu Baiheng for a few more words. After going to Lingzhou, he returned to the capital.

Finally, everyone had left. Fu Baiheng no longer had to pretend to be a brother. He asked coldly, "Doctor Xu, was it really you who cured my brother's eyes?"

Xu Ziling took a sip of tea and thought to herself that the royal family had no family ties after all. Even though she was working for Fu Baiheng now, she still had to uphold medical ethics. So she replied, "It's me. Actually, my father had been researching eye drops when he was alive, and he entrusted me with the task before he died. When your eldest brother came, I applied herbal compresses to his eyes every day. After seven days, he really couldn't see. I didn't expect that he could see again today."

"I really don't know whether recruiting you is a blessing or a curse. You created such a big surprise for me as soon as you came." Fu Baiheng sighed.

Xu Ziling smiled and said, "I didn't know he was your elder brother at the time. Besides, I was just doing my duty as a doctor. If you can't tolerate him, just kill him."

Fu Baiheng looked at her and asked in surprise, "A doctor's heart is kind, so why would you advise me to kill him?"

"The idea that doctors have a benevolent heart is just a stigma imposed on them by the world. I didn't study medicine to save lives, but purely out of an interest in medicine. The human body is fragile. A blow to the head, a cut to the body, and even a little bleeding can kill you. Even if you're lucky enough to never get sick, your body will still age, and you'll live to be a hundred or so at most. I refuse to accept this. Why can't people live forever, free from illness and pain? Birth, aging, sickness, and death are all natural phenomena. Doctors who treat illnesses are fighting against the forces of nature, but I am far greater than them. I seek eternal life, free from illness and pain."

Xu Ziling's shocking words really startled Fu Baiheng. She then continued, "I treat people for money, and I follow you now for money. Without money, I can't support my research. I think your Highness, you must need my research results."

Emperors since ancient times have sought immortality, from Qin Shi Huang to Emperor Wu of Han. Fu Baiheng wondered about this, but also expressed doubts: "Emperor Qin and Emperor Wu of Han, both powerful and influential, sent alchemists out to sea in search of immortals, seeking methods for longevity, or refining elixirs, but ultimately their efforts were in vain. Isn't seeking immortality just a fantasy?"

Xu Ziling said, "A white mouse's lifespan is at most two years, but I've managed to extend its lifespan to five years, more than doubling it. Don't you think this is a fantasy?"
