Barry looked at the two people staring at him and scratched his head a little embarrassedly.
"Back at the City Lord's Mansion, Young Master Gray said he wanted to pursue Sister Edith and asked me to send her flowers every day! But Brother Gray has only been gone for a month, and Sister Edith is getting married to someone else. Young Master Gray will definitely come to steal her away!"
He smiled excitedly as he spoke.
This kid must have heard too many stories about bride kidnapping, but, "Who is this Edith you're talking about?" Phil Gray asked.
“She is the daughter of the lord of our city of Kao,” the old woman explained.
"Is this young master Gray a member of the Gray family?" Phil Gray asked again.
Barry scratched his head. "He's the only one who doesn't want Barry to call him 'brother.' Barry doesn't like him much. He said he's the son of the Gray family patriarch and wants me to call him 'young master.'"
Phil Gray's eyes lit up. Since this guy dared to pursue the city lord's daughter, he definitely wasn't an imposter.
"Barry, you know so many people!"
“Yes, Barry has many good friends. Barry loves making friends. Besides Sister Edith, Barry also has many friends from the city lord’s mansion, such as…” The old woman tugged at Barry, stopping his incessant chatter.
If Barry is right, then this young master Gray might indeed come to the wedding in three days.
"But how am I supposed to get into the city lord's mansion that day?"
Phil Gray rubbed his temples, deep in thought.
However, the only thing that bothered him was also resolved.
After discussing how to infiltrate the city lord's mansion, Barry said that because of wedding preparations, the city lord's mansion was short-staffed, so the city lord was recruiting temporary workers for the next few days.
If he wants to go to the city lord's mansion, he can take this opportunity.
"That's great!" Phil Gray couldn't help but want to clap his hands like Barry, but he restrained himself.
There was someone present who knew his identity as the Pope, so we had to maintain proper etiquette.
Phil Gray coughed. "Then I'll go try applying."
"Go find the house at the back of the alley first. Their daughter works at the city lord's mansion, I think she's a supervisor. Go ask her first, and if she asks about your identity, just say you're a distant relative of mine," the old woman suggested.
"Let Barry take you there; he knows him."
"Great! Great! Let's go meet the old friends with the new ones!" Barry cheered.
After walking for a while, we arrived at the place we had been told about.
This family's house was larger and tidier than everyone else's on the street.
Barry knocked on the door. "Barry's here, Lisa, open the door!"
A moment later, a woman opened the door and came out. She looked rather short, with a graceful figure and wavy hair tied with a red ribbon.
"Barry, what brings you here?"
Then, her eyes widened as she stared straight at Phil Gray. "He's so handsome!"
"Hello, my name is Lisa. Are you Barry's friend?"
“Yes, I heard that the city lord’s mansion is hiring temporary workers, and I’d like to give it a try,” Phil Gray said with a smile.
In Lisa's eyes, the person in front of her seemed to be glowing.
“Okay, okay, I’m the assistant head of the kitchen. I’ll recommend you for a kitchen job.” Lisa thought for a moment and replied.
"Come in quickly, come in and let's talk."
With that, Lisa invited them into the house.
“Then I’ll leave it to you,” Phil Gray said gratefully.
"Barry, how did you meet such a handsome guy?" Lisa poured them both a glass of water.
"I…"
Before he could answer, Phil Gray interjected, "I'm his distant cousin, and I just came from outside the city."
“Oh, but your appearance and demeanor make you seem like an aristocrat,” Lisa exclaimed.
“No, my family is very poor, that’s why I came to you. I hope to earn some money at the city lord’s mansion and change my family’s situation,” Phil Gray explained, giving the woman in front of him another smile.
“Yes, we can change our destiny through our own efforts. Don’t believe those things the Vatican preaches about how fate is predetermined. As long as you work hard, one day you’ll be able to enjoy life like those noble gentlemen!” Lisa encouraged.
This guy doesn't seem to have a very good impression of the Vatican.
“Yes, I also believe that fate is in our own hands, not determined by the gods. Only cowards would blame everything on the arrangements of the gods,” Phil Gray said calmly.
Lisa's eyes widened. "Well said! I actually think you have the potential to become... you know what I mean."
She omitted a few words in the middle.
Phil Gray was puzzled. What was she trying to say?
“If you’re interested, go to the red door in the middle of the first alley around midnight tonight, knock three times, pause for a moment, then knock twice more. I’ll recommend you then,” Lisa whispered in Phil Gray’s ear.
"What are you talking about? Is there something you can't let Barry hear?" Barry asked, sounding a little aggrieved.
"It's nothing, Barry. I'll get some groceries for you to take back to your mother." Lisa waved her hand and ran off to get the groceries.
What?
Phil Gray hadn't quite grasped what Lisa had just said—did she mean recommending him to the city lord's mansion meant going there in the middle of the night?
Or should it become something else?
He became somewhat curious.
After Lisa took out the food, they said goodbye.
Night fell quickly, and Phil Gray took a nap. Around midnight, he tiptoed out of the house.
There's still no moon tonight; it's pitch black.
Phil Gray took the lamp Barry had given him, went to the location Lisa had indicated, and knocked on the door.
After waiting for a moment, he heard a deep voice coming from inside.
"Please come in!"
The door wasn't locked, so he pushed it open and went inside.
Before me stood an old man with white hair, who said in a low voice, "Come with me."
He followed the old man to a tree in the yard, where the old man lifted a wooden plank, revealing a passageway inside.
"Go in."
Phil Gray went down, but the old man didn't follow.
He could only carry the lamp and walk inside.
Soon, he reached the end, where it was very bright because there were about a dozen other people holding lanterns.
Are these all here to apply for temporary jobs at the City Lord's Mansion?
Phil Gray's lips twitched.
"Handsome guy, come over here!"
Phil Gray was lost in thought when he saw Lisa waving at him.
He greeted them with a smile.
"You really came! I'll introduce you to the leader after the opening ceremony!"
"good."
Phil Gray nodded. He also sensed something was amiss. This was definitely not a temporary worker recruitment event; it was probably a gathering of some mysterious organization.
He looked around at the people. They all seemed to be ordinary citizens, chatting in twos and threes, and some even glanced at him casually.
Not long after, a middle-aged woman came down from the passage. She looked very kind and had her face covered with gauze.
She shouted as she walked:
"Is everyone here? The god of fate has long abandoned us. We will take control of our own destiny! The Vatican calls us apostates, but we laugh at them as puppets manipulated by this damned fate! Cowards!"
The entire passageway instantly erupted in a cacophony of voices, all shouting, "Take control of your own destiny!"
"Break free from the control of fate!"
Lisa shouted too.
Phil Gray's smile froze instantly.
