Chapter 223 Unraveling the Mystery in the Dark

After everyone left, an exhausted Phil Gray decided to rest for a while, since even the most powerful chosen ones were still dependent on sleep.

He fell into a deep sleep as soon as his body touched the soft bed.

He didn't know how much time had passed, but in a half-dream, half-awake state, he seemed to feel something curled up beside him, so he couldn't help but wrap the blanket tighter around himself.

The thing trembled gently and rhythmically, and made a soft breathing sound.

Phil Gray instantly woke up, and as he reached into the blankets to grope around, he unexpectedly touched a warm, furry thing.

He sat up in surprise, pulled back the covers, and saw a black cat curled up beside his legs in the darkness that should have been a million miles away from him!

How did this cat get here?

Phil Gray couldn't resist picking it up and stroking its shiny, soft fur.

Could this little guy be the legendary Child of Night?

The darkness noticed he was awake, lifted its eyelids, and uttered a resentful voice: "You heartless bastard, you didn't even take me with you when you left, and now you're still sleeping so soundly here, it's too much!"

The cat's voice was somewhat weathered and hoarse, like that of a middle-aged man who had experienced many hardships, which almost made Phil Gray lose his grip.

Should he be surprised that the cat could talk, or surprised that such a cute cat had such a deep, middle-aged voice?

"Ahem, we couldn't beat Elder Memphis back then, so we had to make do with you. We didn't forget about you and were planning to pick you up sometime, but we didn't expect you to come here on your own." Phil Gray put Night on the bed and watched the cat stand up and stretch.

"Hmph, if I weren't an ordinary cat, I would have been buried there with that old man long ago." Night snorted and lazily lay down again.

"May I ask, are you the Child of Night? The supreme god who wields the power over the night?"

Phil Gray asked directly.

"No problem, you're only realizing this now? I thought you knew it long ago when you named it." Night licked its paws. "Looking at it this way, you really just stumbled upon it by sheer luck, it was a perfect name."

Who knew it would be such a coincidence? Phil Gray never expected that the cat he casually named Night would actually become the Child of Night.

He now has to believe in the power of fate.

"You just said that you and Elder Memphis almost died there? Where was it?"

"Those three hiding in their turtle shells, secretly causing trouble, are from the gods. Speaking of which, that old man is really reckless. He rushed over as soon as he saw his granddaughter and even dared to challenge the gods. Although they are three lowly guys, they are still gods. If I hadn't saved them in time, most of the Dawn would have died there." Night said disdainfully, its four legs together, head held high, looking every bit the most powerful cat.

"So the darkness just now was because you used divine power to save them?"

"Hmph, what else could I do? Luckily, I absorbed that part of the divine kingdom fragment and accumulated some power, otherwise I would have lost another life."

"Thank you for saving them." Phil Gray couldn't help but pat its head, but then belatedly realized that his action might have offended the gods.

But seeing the Night making a comfortable gurgling sound, he wondered to himself why the Child of Night wasn't the cute little boy from the legends, but instead a middle-aged man who kept saying "I am."

Or perhaps their voice just sounds a bit older?

Actually, he still looks like a little boy?

But since he was a cat now, he swallowed his doubts.

"No need for thanks. Once we return to the Kingdom of God, I'll personally go to the Prophet of the Day for my thanks." Night squinted, still looking like he was enjoying himself.

"How are those three gods doing? Have they broken free from their possession of humans?" Phil Gray asked, voicing his biggest concern.

"No, my power is very limited. It was already difficult enough to save those people. Moreover, it's not easy for a god to remove a possession. These three humans could easily die if I'm not careful." Hei Ye glanced at him and said in a deep tone.

"Then do you know why no other gods descended to earth to stop them? I've heard that believers in many religions have prayed fervently for the gods to descend."

"The powerful gods are probably busy and may not be able to spare the time. Even the less powerful gods who descend to earth are no match for them. Those three guys are quite troublesome."

"Besides, they didn't actively do anything that would bring humanity to the brink of destruction, and because their power was limited by possession, most gods turned a blind eye. With so many believers, they wouldn't care too much if a few died, as long as humanity still existed." A human-like cold smile appeared in the dark pupils of the night.

"Also, do you know... about the Gods of the Abyss?" Phil Gray asked.

The Son of Night was murdered by His Goddess of Dreams and fell about a thousand years ago. It is unknown whether they existed at that time.

"I know, Dreamland is in cahoots with them, otherwise how could I have fallen into that bitch's hands?" Night spoke with particular resentment when the Goddess of Dreamland was mentioned.

"So, how did you survive? And why did you turn into a cat?" Phil Gray asked curiously.

"I am a cat, what can you do about it? Don't you know cats have nine lives? Or are you prejudiced against cats? You seemed to be enjoying petting me just now, put your hand on me!"

Night rolled its eyes, and Phil Gray, still stunned, continued to pamper the cat with his hands.

"The gods of the Abyss appeared so early?"

“Even earlier, back then... oh, anyway, this time they secretly infiltrated, trying to dismantle the gods of Weir from within. Many gods became their lackeys, like those three subordinate gods. They were never favored by the other gods of Weir, so they secretly sided with the gods of the Abyss.”

"When was it earlier?" Phil Gray sensed the unspoken implication.

"This is none of your business. Knowing too much is not good." Hei Ye glanced sideways, looking mysterious.

"Alright, do you know any other ways to gain power besides becoming a chosen one of the gods?"

"What? You also want to kill a god and seize power?" Hei Ye looked at him incredulously.

“Oh, of course not.” Phil Gray revealed the God of Fate’s plan to fight against the gods of the Abyss by creating an omnipotent deity, which made the cat’s eyes widen.

"That guy actually fell into the hands of another god one day? That's hilarious! I wish I were there, I really want to see him in such a sorry state!" Night laughed.

It seems these two gods have some past grievances? But they shouldn't be enemies, otherwise this cat wouldn't be so friendly to its follower—itself.

"However, I must say, His idea makes a lot of sense. As for how to obtain power, the fragments of the Dark Night Kingdom sensed something from you back then, right?"

"Yes."

"That's right, because you already have Lao Tzu's divine power within you."

"When? Was it that tuft of cat hair?"

Phil Gray looked at the darkness in surprise.
