Chapter 58 Mission Departure

I arrived at the Cathedral of Life once again, and there weren't many people in the mission hall.

“We want to take on mission 2445,” Ernest said to the priest.

The pastor nodded to him, gave him a thumbs-up, and took out a brown paper bag.

Ernest handed it to Phil Gray, and the others joined in.

Open the bag; inside are the detailed documents for the escort mission.

Upon seeing the name of the target, Phil Gray and Patrick exchanged bewildered glances and hurriedly closed the file.

This piqued Ernest's curiosity. "What's wrong? Is this mission not suitable for us?"

“No, it’s just that the person we’re escorting…” Patrick hesitated.

“He is the illegitimate son of the Duke and Princess of Surrey, George Surrey,” Phil Gray added, then looked at Ernest. “We don’t know what happened between you and the Duke of Surrey. If you don’t want to see his illegitimate son, we’ll abandon the mission.”

Eli looked at Ernest with interest; his identity seemed rather intriguing.

Ernest was silent for a moment. “It’s alright, I can take the mission. I’m wearing a mask, they won’t recognize me.”

"good."

Upon further reading of the materials, it was found that "George came to the Church of Life to propose to the daughter of the Archbishop of the Church of Life and to discuss marriage with her."

Afterwards, the Church of Life arranged for someone to escort him back to the capital of the Kingdom of Puna. The specific route started from the nearby city of Daman, and generally required passing through the areas of the Church of Life, the Cult of the Dark God, and the Plague Controllers before reaching the capital.

"Why such a high reward, a full 1000 gold coins? He's just an ordinary person, he shouldn't be in any danger," Patrick wondered.

“No, there is danger. First, we have to pass through the area controlled by the plague-makers. They act recklessly and poison people without any reason. There’s no guarantee they won’t target George. Second, do you remember the issue of the Duke of Surrey’s succession? He is currently the Duke of Surrey’s only son. If he dies, how will the Duke of Surrey’s property be distributed?” Phil Gray asked.

“He also has a daughter,” Patrick said.

"Yes, so it's also possible that his daughter would harm this illegitimate child."

Ernest looked up, his expression somewhat agitated. "No, she wouldn't do that. She's a kind child."

“Ah, yes, if that’s the case, then the danger might come from elsewhere. For example, it’s not impossible that the bishop’s daughter is unhappy with her fiancé and hires someone to assassinate him.” Patrick scratched his head somewhat awkwardly.

“Yes, such high pay must be due to the high level of danger.” Phil Gray nodded in agreement.

“However, we may also be facing pursuit from the Cult of Dawn now. Taking on this mission and making the situation even more murky might actually allow us to use the strength of the mission target to fight against the Cult of Dawn,” Eli laughed. “Surely the Duke and the Princess’s son don’t even have a single guard by their side.”

The priest in charge of the mission hall walked over and said, "It puts our minds at ease that you accepted this escort mission. After all, judging from the last mission, you are all reliable people. As for others, they also wanted to take on this mission, but they did not pass our review."

“We will do our best,” Phil Gray smiled.

The official departure time is tomorrow night, which means they need to hurry to Dammam City.

After a quick tidying up, they boarded the train. The tickets were a gift from the Church of Life, so they didn't have to pay for the mission themselves.

After a day and a night of travel, they arrived at their destination in the afternoon.

Upon arriving in Daman, they were greeted at the city gate and were recognized by the people there.

"Hello, are you the chosen ones who have accepted the mission? The Church of Life has informed us. Please follow me, Young Master George is waiting." A servant-like man spoke to them politely.

Phil Gray and the others nodded and followed him to a large manor.

They met the person they were escorting, Mr. George, who had a dashing appearance, with dark eyes, dark hair, and a nonchalant smile on his lips.

“He doesn’t look much like the Duke of Surrey. I think Ernest looks more like him,” Patrick said in a low voice.

“Maybe more like a princess,” Phil Gray replied.

When they arrived, George extended his hand to them, "Good afternoon, gentlemen. I'll be relying on you to protect my safety on this journey."

Phil Gray extended his hand, saying, "We will do our best to ensure your safety."

George glanced at the group and said to the servant who had led them in, “Prepare some dinner for these gentlemen. After dinner, we will depart.”

"Yes, young master."

As night slowly fell, Phil Gray and his companions strolled around the estate where George lived after dinner.

“Most of our journey will be by long train, but there are some cities that don’t have long trains, so we’ll still need to travel by carriage,” Patrick said. “I’ve calculated the distance, and if everything goes smoothly at full speed, it will take more than ten days to get there.”

"Yes, but it probably won't be that peaceful."

They suddenly stopped and hid behind the fence.

"Why? Why won't you take me with you?"

Ahead was a woman, held in George's arms. Her hair was as black and shiny as ebony, but her face was not clearly visible, and her waist was slender.

George flicked her forehead. "What nonsense are you talking about? If I take you back, won't our affair be exposed? If that bishop finds out, he'll definitely kill you and me for his daughter's sake. Then even my mother won't be able to protect me."

"After you inherit the title of Duke, will you come back and marry me?" the woman asked, her voice trembling with tears.

“No, no, no, that old man would never let me inherit the dukedom, and I disdain that title. I was born noble and have better options,” George said smugly, lifting the woman’s chin with his finger.

The woman stood up, slapped his hand away, and said resolutely, "So you've been lying to me all this time? No way, I'm going to tell everyone that you can forget about marrying the bishop's daughter and getting the support of the Church of Life."

George stood up, his expression grim. He chopped at the back of the woman's neck, and she fell to the ground. "Take her back and handle her as usual."

"yes."

A figure appeared beside him and carried the woman away.

George stood there for a while, then left.

"That guy is really ruthless," Patrick remarked.

"We can't control him. Hopefully, that girl has seen his true colors. It's time to go," Phil Gray said calmly, looking at his servants who were searching for them in the distance.

"Gentlemen, where have you been? It's time to set off!" The servant's smile couldn't hide the displeasure in his eyes.

"Your young master didn't leave either," Patrick muttered under his breath.
