"Get back to the mine, or I'll have to do it!" Another skeleton tapped his shield with a bone knife, his voice rough.
“I…I don’t want to…” Yulia lowered her head, the spiritual fire in her eyes dimming.
“They must not get along with you very well, right? In that case, it saves you the trouble of going to the Resting House.” Phil Gray walked up from behind Uriah, a cold smile playing on his lips.
"Such a thick aura of death, and such an outstanding face, a count-level vampire?" The female skeleton was filled with doubt and raised her bone knife in front of her for defense.
Phil Gray didn't waste any words with them. He took out a white glove from the space stone and put it on his right hand. A greatsword burning with the flames of the sun slashed through the darkness. In a moment, only the fallen skull and the skeleton that had been cleaved into several pieces remained on the ground. The cuts were charred and still smoking!
He quickly sheathed the Blazing Sun Sword and slowly removed his gloves.
We must conserve our divine power.
"Oh my god!"
With Uriah's scream, Phil Gray bent down and pulled four orbs of spirit fire from the two skulls on the ground. Although the spirit fire was fire, it was extremely cold, like placing an ice cube in his palm. He used his death power to knead the four orbs of spirit fire together, and the combined brightness was enough to be considered a lamp.
It could barely illuminate a distance of three or four meters in front of him.
He glanced around, picked up a stick from a pile of dry branches on the ground. It had a branch at the top and was barely straight at the bottom. He then placed the spirit fire on the branch and held it up like a torch.
Finally, there was light. Phil Gray breathed a sigh of relief, then held up the spirit fire and looked around at the surrounding environment. It was similar to the terrain he had imagined, but there were some differences in the details.
The soil on the ground was black, with some viscous, dark reddish-black liquid and some unidentified dark black humus in some places.
He took a few steps forward, and then he could no longer see clearly beyond that point, but there seemed to be some strangely shaped trees, twisted vines, and scattered lonely graves around him.
Phil Gray turned around and saw Uriah following behind him, trembling and walking very carefully.
"What's wrong? You need to lead the way."
"You...you're still going to the Resting House?" Yulia looked at the spirit fire he was holding. He never expected the person in front of him to be so powerful, killing two skeletons without even blinking.
Phil Gray thought for a moment, "I don't need to go for now. I'm very interested in your Rebirth Feast. Could you tell me about it? By the way, you said it's about to start. Let's talk as we walk."
“Alright, the Rebirth Feast is hosted by the Lord. It’s mainly to welcome those who have just left the mortal world due to death and have chosen to remain in the Abyss as skeletons. It’s held only once a year. All the undead who have become skeletons within the past year can receive a residence permit from the Lord at the Rebirth Feast, and undergo the baptism of death, discarding all emotions left over from the mortal world, and becoming true residents of the Abyss,” Yuria explained.
"A baptism of death? Will the god of death come in person?" Phil Gray asked curiously.
“No, but Lord, you can use the divine descent to bring a divine consciousness to the scene. I really want to see the god…” Yulia lowered his head. He wanted to ask the god why he had always been just an undead soldier. He clearly had the most devout faith when he was alive, and after death, he resolutely refused to enter the Wheel of Life, but remained in the abyss.
A divine intervention? Indeed, a lord-level undead is equivalent to a divinely descended follower.
Surely a lord-level undead would know how to leave the abyss? At the very least, a wisp of the God of Death's consciousness should know how to escape, right?
However, the lord is certain to be able to see through his identity as a living person, which is far too dangerous.
Phil Gray had several thoughts flashing through his mind in an instant, but he still made a decision. He looked at Uriah walking beside him and asked, "Are there any requirements to participate in the Rebirth Feast? Haven't you been in the Abyss for a hundred years? Can you still participate?"
“The main characters are undead who have only been in the Abyss for a year, but we can be spectators. However, the lord issued an order that only undead with dignified appearances and proper skeletons can participate, otherwise it might frighten the newcomers. I was just worried that my wrist was twisted and I wouldn’t be able to participate, but it’s fine now.” Uriah waved his pale hand again. It was too dark to see clearly before, but Phil Gray could see it clearly now.
After walking for a short while, a straight road appeared before them, white and cold, seemingly paved with bones.
Phil Gray stepped on it, feeling the chill creep up from his feet to his heart. He looked at Uriah beside him, who had an expression of pure enjoyment, and couldn't help but sigh at the vast difference between the living and the dead.
After walking onto the path of bones, there seemed to be more undead around him. He could see some spirit fires floating in the air in the distance from time to time, as well as white eye sockets under the dim light.
"Huh? It's the vampire lord? My lord, wait for me!" A startled cry came from behind, followed by heavy footsteps. Phil Gray turned around, but did not see the ghostly blue spirit flame.
Was something calling him just now?
The footsteps grew closer. He raised the spirit fire in his hand, and a tall figure appeared in his field of vision. The figure had bluish-green skin, a bald forehead, and a tattered black linen cloth that barely covered its vital parts. However, the two mounds on its chest made it possible to identify it as a female zombie.
"My lord, did you come from Dark Night City to attend the Rebirth Banquet? I came from the Corpse Cave next to you. You are so handsome! You must be a marquis, right? Oh no, even Marquis Murray isn't as good-looking as you. You must be a duke." The female zombie leaned closer to him, and a string of pink hearts seemed to be popping out of her murky eyes.
"A cave?" Phil Gray subtly took a few steps back.
“It’s the Corpse Cave, which also belongs to the Northern Region. Their lord is a zombie, so it’s a zombie settlement,” Yuria explained earnestly.
"We zombies are much better looking than you skeletons. I really don't understand why so many people choose to become skeletons when they have the option to become zombies. Unlike those undead who came a few days ago, their flesh was all removed, leaving them only skeletons," the female zombie said disdainfully to Yulia beside her.
“You green monsters are the ugliest. Bones are the purest and hardest, and they will never decay,” Uriah retorted.
Phil Gray ignored their mutual contempt and was instead drawn to the female zombie's words, "The undead who came a few days ago were reduced to skeletons, so they could only choose to become skeletons? They also want to participate in the rebirth feast?"
These must be the passengers who chose to go to the abyss back then.
