Phil Gray just smiled and didn't answer.
Time passed slowly, and as two more souls flew out of the mirror, Bishop Rodney and Saint Jaslin awoke, their expressions somewhat dazed, as if they had not yet recovered from the illusion of death.
A short while later, the other Holy Son, Bishop Marshall, also returned to his body. His face quickly fell, as if he had experienced something very bad.
The archbishop gestured for his servant to add two more chairs, and said with a smile, "Which of the remaining two will be the last to come out?"
The answer was soon revealed. Phil Gray saw Eli's soul return to his body, and stood there stunned, softly uttering the word "sister."
It just didn't make a sound.
Phil Gray knew that the death that struck him most deeply was the passing of his sister.
Immediately afterwards, the Holy Son Yilai also returned to his place. It is said that after this Holy Son entered the Mirror of Life and Death, all the dead souls disappeared. However, after he came out, thousands of dead souls reappeared around him. So, these dead souls were following his soul.
Phil Gray was very curious about what was going on.
“Alright, everyone is out now. Elder, it’s time for your Holy Spirit to announce the score it gave,” the Archbishop said.
Sid nodded, and with a wave of his hand, the Mirror of Life and Death, which had been flying in the air, rapidly shrank back into his hand. Then, the Holy Spirit in the mirror revealed his true form to everyone.
The jelly-like object with a human face startled the believers present, and the other holy children were also somewhat surprised.
"This is the Holy Spirit of the Mirror of Life and Death? I thought it would be some kind of ghostly being," Eli said, rubbing his stiff neck.
Yi Lai Zhe went straight over, but after receiving a sharp glare from the Grand Elder, he returned to his original position.
It seems they did not see the true face of the Holy Spirit in the mirror.
"When you float in front of someone, give them a simple evaluation of their performance and assign them a score, with a maximum of ten points," Sid said to the Holy Spirit.
“Yes, Master… cough cough.” The Holy Spirit’s voice was still weak, and he turned around to glare at Phil Gray.
No one else noticed, but Phil Gray felt a little guilty. Could the Holy Spirit have deliberately given him a low score?
Probably not. This is death and fear brought by the gods of the Abyss. If this doesn't get a high score, what kind of death can?
Jelly Saintess suddenly leaped in front of Saintess Jaslin, her face contorted in pain. "You treat life and death equally, blurring the lines between them. Not bad, score eight."
Saintess Jasmine nodded slightly and gave a gentle smile.
This is her advantage. As a combination of the undead and the human, she does not feel any difference between life and death, and she is prepared for the day when her human parts decay and disappear, and she completely becomes an undead and goes to the abyss.
The saint's beauty and calm, gentle nature won the favor of most believers, and enthusiastic applause rang out in the church.
Jelly jumped onto Marshall's shoulder and shook its body. "You seem to know all about the ways to die. In the illusion, you seemed to try to experience the feeling of being near death in various ways, but your feelings when you were near death, besides piety towards death, also carried some shame and resistance? I'm really curious about what your illusion was, but the path to death is equal for everyone, so I don't have any profound insights. I'll give it a 7 out of 10."
Marshall's face grew even uglier. Some of the believers chuckled, but they were quickly met with cold stares from the others. This saint was also loved by many.
Jelly Holy Spirit jumped in front of Bishop Rodney again: "The sacrifice and loyalty of thousands of people, your own pain and regret, I guess your illusion is that in a battle you personally sent your subordinates to the abyss, not only winning the battle but also freeing them, leaving only pain and regret to yourself, right? I'll give you 8 points too."
Rodney nodded. "The illusion is pretty much what you guessed."
Then, Jelly Holy Spirit was intercepted by Yi Lai Zhe, who asked, "What about me?"
The numerous souls behind him also stared intently at the Holy Spirit, seemingly expecting it to reveal the answer.
“A grand death is etched in your blood, and I am honored to have experienced it firsthand. I will give you a score of 9,” the Holy Spirit said after a moment’s hesitation.
"Wow!"
A cheer erupted; this was the highest score so far.
"Haha, thank you." Yi Lai Zhe laughed smugly, but for some reason, Phil Gray sensed a hint of sadness in his eyes.
But this was quickly masked by his smug, self-satisfied expression. "Where are those two guys?"
He pointed to Phil Gray and Eli, whose scores were not announced at the end.
Marshall clenched his fist. He was more nervous than the other two because he had the lowest score and really didn't want to be at the bottom.
He would be satisfied as long as either of the two people scored six points or less.
Jelly Saint thought for a moment and then jumped to Eli's side, looking him up and down. "A born Death Child, bearing the mark of a god, you have a high affinity for death, making those around you more likely to experience it. However, your belief in death is somewhat different..."
Eli licked his lips but didn't speak. What was his belief in death?
He had no faith in death; what he pursued was life, to live on! His faith lay in living on himself, in his sister living on, and in ensuring that everyone around him lived on.
He had just relived his sister's death in the illusion, and all the emotions in his mind converged into one thought: to hell with death, he wanted his sister to live!
Therefore, even Death cannot let her leave his side!
The only downside is that it looks like it's going to get a low score this time.
Jelly Holy Spirit paused deliberately for a moment, then continued, "But this difference doesn't mean it's wrong. Your feelings are profound and your insights are unique, so I'll give you the same 8 points."
This works?
Eli was somewhat taken aback, but then he became happy. He hadn't expected to get a decent score, at least not at the bottom, otherwise it would have been so embarrassing.
Marshall's heart sank, and he prayed to God that the Holy Spirit would give the last candidate a lower score.
“Alright, only one candidate remains,” the archbishop said, drawing everyone’s attention to Phil Gray.
Jelly Holy Spirit shuddered, but instead of getting close to Phil Gray, he slowly said from a distance of about two people, "This guy, I'd give him -10 points."
ah?
The entire audience erupted in uproar. How could someone possibly receive a negative score?
Marshall was also taken aback, thinking to himself that even if his prayers to the gods had been answered, he shouldn't have received such a low score.
Something seemed amiss, and he became uneasy.
The believers were also discussing it, saying that even if someone from the Faith of Life came here as an undercover agent, they couldn't possibly get this score, right?
"Hahaha."
The only one who could laugh out loud without any hesitation was the Archbishop. He looked at Elder Sid and asked, "Has something gone wrong?"
