Chapter 32 Mirror of Life

"Great, we can go there to do our mission now."

Phil Gray had heard Patrick complain a lot over the past three days. As far as he knew, they had less than 10 gold coins left, and if things continued like this, they would be homeless.

Moreover, he needed more gold coins to pay for the dead man's right hand that the man would bring seven days later.

"Shall we set off now?"

“Of course, no problem. You’re the boss, I’ll do whatever you say.” Eli raised an eyebrow.

Patrick and Ernest naturally had no objections.

The winter sun was exceptionally warm, and the snow had mostly melted. The lush green trees and grass along the streets made the city of Duer look like springtime, with only the still-cold air reminding them that it was winter.

They rode in a rented horse-drawn carriage toward the Cathedral of Life.

"If we buy a carriage, we won't have to pay for renting one."

Patrick said.

“We won’t be staying in Duer City for long, so buying a carriage would be a waste. Do you remember your carriage that was left in Kao City?” Phil Gray shook his head.

After chatting for a while, we arrived at the Cathedral of Life.

Perhaps because it opened early and many people didn't know, the Cathedral of Life was rather quiet today, with only a few priests cleaning at the entrance.

After entering the church, Eli pointed upwards and said, "The mission hall is on the third floor."

"Are you here on a mission?"

An elderly pastor asked in a friendly manner.

"Yes."

"There are quite a few tasks backlogged over the past three days. You can pick one with high pay to do."

“Thanks for reminding me,” Phil Gray replied with a smile.

That was his original plan, but he also had to consider the difficulty of the task, given the generous reward.

Upon arriving on the third floor, Phil Gray was immediately drawn to the enormous mirror suspended in mid-air.

The mirror was about three meters tall, with a green, carved frame. It didn't reflect people, but rather rows of constantly scrolling words, just like the electronic screens he had seen on Earth.

Upon closer inspection, those words represent specific tasks, each preceded by a number.

"It's amazing," Phil Gray exclaimed.

“This is a relic of a bishop of the Church of Life—a panel of the Mirror of Life. Every church in every city of the Church of Life has such a panel, and the contents of the panel can be shared in real time in dozens of cities. This is also to facilitate those favored by God to carry out cross-regional missions,” Eli explained, his tone carrying a hint of reverence.

"Is this sacred object really that powerful?"

"Of course, sacred objects are of different qualities, but all sacred objects are extremely precious and powerful."

How are the qualities of sacred objects classified?

“There is no clear division. The sacred objects of each god have different functions, so it is impossible to compare or classify them. For the chosen ones of the gods, the most powerful sacred object is the one that suits them. The sacred object of the god of life will naturally not be able to play its proper role in the hands of the chosen ones of the god of death.” Eli pointed to the mirror, “Look to the left, that is the mission of the local city of Dur.”

"If you want to do a certain task, write down the number in front of it and then give it to the priest over there."

Phil Gray looked back and saw a row of tables on the south side of the mission hall, where a priest was sitting.

Besides them, there were only two or three other people who came to do the task, silently watching the Mirror of Life.

"Cousin, I've taken a close look, and this task is the simplest and easiest of all."

Which one?

"It's 2203."

Phil Gray stared intently at the words, which read, “2203. Please help a countess reunite with her lover.”

"What kind of mission is this? How come it was posted in the mission hall of the Chosen Ones?" Phil Gray was about to complain about Patrick when he saw that the reward was 500 gold coins.

There are quite a lot.

Looking at the other tasks below, they are all about escorting important nobles to other cities, collecting certain materials, or eliminating plague carriers in a certain place, and the reward is no more than 100 gold coins.

The 500 gold coin quest is indeed the most rewarding.

“Shall we go and ask about the specifics of this mission?” Patrick asked.

"What happens if the mission fails?" Phil Gray asked Eli, who replied casually, "Nothing will happen. You can tell the priest here that you're abandoning the mission, and it will reappear on the Mirror of Life, waiting for the next chosen one."

"That's worth a try."

“This mission is quite interesting,” Patrick said with a smile.

Phil Gray nodded; at least the compensation was the highest.

"I'll go ask first, and you can stay here and see if there are any other more suitable tasks."

“Okay.” Patrick and Ernest nodded, while Eli remained lost in thought, pacing back and forth in front of the Mirror of Life.

Phil Gray walked to the large table on the west side. At that moment, someone who seemed to be on a mission walked up next to him, but he didn't pay any attention to him.

"Hello, I'd like to take on a mission," Phil Gray greeted them first.

The person next to him tapped on the table, seemingly indicating that he also wanted to take on a mission.

Which mission would you two like to take?

"2203".

"2203".

Phil Gray glanced at the man beside him, who was wearing a black tailcoat with a dark green gemstone brooch and white gloves.

He exuded a rich aura of life, seemingly a chosen one of the gods of life.

The man glanced at him briefly before turning his head away.

"Are you two together?" the pastor asked hesitantly.

"no."

“I am a nobleman, how could I possibly be in league with a commoner?” The man laughed and urged, “Hurry up, my time is very precious.”

"Gentlemen, wouldn't one of you consider changing to another mission?"

“No.” Phil Gray shook his head. This mission offered the highest reward and didn’t seem dangerous at all. Why would he switch?

"I won't change it either."

"This..." the pastor hesitated, "I need to ask the person in charge."

“Okay.” Phil Gray nodded politely, then casually looked around.

"How could a commoner like you accept this kind of mission? Are you trying to get close to nobles on purpose? Give up that idea. Nobles and commoners are like pigeons in the sky and worms on the ground. They can never get along on equal terms. Besides, you can't complete this mission."

He looked Phil Gray up and down. The man in front of him had short blond hair, an extremely ordinary face, and wore a brown cotton coat that only ordinary people would wear. He didn't even have any aura of divine power on him. Of course, it was possible that he had used an item to conceal his divine power, but it was unlikely that an ordinary person would do that.

Phil Gray was utterly speechless. How could he encounter such a person while accepting a mission? If he were to argue with him, wouldn't he be lowering himself to Patrick's level, which would be a real loss of his composure?

But he couldn't swallow his anger if he ignored the provocation.

"And what about you? As a nobleman, you take on this kind of mission, is it for the 500 gold coins reward? A nobleman of your stature, lacking such a small amount of money? You must be a fallen nobleman. Tsk tsk, that's too pitiful." Phil Gray said with a smile, his tone still nonchalant, but to those around him it was extremely sarcastic.

“Who’s down on their luck? I took this mission for Miss Julie.” The nobleman glared at him, blushing for a moment when Miss Julie was mentioned, but seemed to want to maintain his composure and said no more.

"Oh? So you're probably not the lover mentioned in her mission, are you? What? A humble secret admirer?" Phil Gray casually rested his hand on the table, looking quite interested.

"you……"

"What's going on? Is there a commotion over there?" Patrick asked, noticing his cousin seemingly arguing with someone next to him, who glared at his cousin fiercely.

His anger flared up, and he stormed over.

Ernest also turned his gaze away from the dense list of tasks and gripped his longsword tightly.
