Chapter 315 Two-Day Deadline
Charles didn't answer. He wasn't actually sure, but he thought the latter was more likely.
"But." Tijani was skeptical. "How can the enemy break through our defenses in two days? I mean, if they can't do it now, why can they do it in two days?"
The French defense line should have been increasingly difficult to break through. The first day was a landing and a rapid attack. There was a shortage of troops, ammunition, and supplies. Even fresh water became a problem.
At night, the fleet would continue to send them in, and the western end of the defense line was already receiving supplies from the transport ships.
With the added firepower support from the fleet, how could the enemy be so sure of a breakthrough in two days?
Charles replied softly: "Think about it, General, what is the difference between the enemy now and the enemy two days later?"
Tijani was silent for a while and shook his head blankly. He couldn't think of any difference.
But he added: "Could it be the Germans? Will German reinforcements arrive here?"
"No, General," Charles denied. "Even the Germans don't necessarily fight better than the Ottomans."
It is true that the Ottomans fought bravely in this battle.
As for the German army, even if they had better qualities and better equipment, they might not have the same determination as the Ottomans to defend their homeland to the death in this unfamiliar land.
"That is..." Tijani was even more confused.
"Grenades," Charles revealed the answer. "And mortars. If these two items were delivered to the Ottoman army..."
Tijani said "Oh" and nodded slightly, his expression instantly becoming serious.
The reason why the French army was able to repel the Ottoman army's attacks time and time again was because of the advantages of mortars and grenades.
But if the Ottoman army also had grenades and mortars, they could use mortars to suppress French machine guns in the trenches, and the soldiers could rush into the 50-meter line of the defense line and throw grenades into the French trenches, instead of being blocked outside the 50-meter line as they are now.
Thinking of this, Tijani gradually lost his color. This might very likely deal a fatal blow to the French defense. This was the difference between being able to break through the defense line and not being able to break through the defense line!
Then, Tijani looked at Charles for help: "What can we do about it, Colonel? After all, you invented them!"
Ciel laughed. Just because he invented it, didn't mean there was a way to crack it.
If there is, we can only say that the thing that can crack a grenade is a grenade, and the thing that can crack a mortar is a mortar.
Charles replied helplessly: "The only way is to make the enemy surrender within two days."
"But how can we do this?" Tijani's voice was a little frustrated. "We can't just hold a loudspeaker and shout to the enemy in corner 'A', saying you've been fooled, there will be no sea supply line, surrender now!"
Of course this is not possible. Although it is true, the enemy will obviously regard the French army's words as a deceptive lie.
Charles did not answer, because he had no idea of a solution, this was unexpected.
Charles found that he had underestimated the enemy. The enemy commander was a master. He knew to send people like Bahar to the "A" corner to inspire people and boost morale. He also knew that Charles' defense line had limited space, and he knew to use grenades and mortars to deal with Charles' defense.
He would even accumulate troops, artillery, and shells in the next two days, and then launch a thundering attack on the Charles defense line.
At this time, there was a cheer from outside the tunnel. Adrian excitedly went into the tunnel and reported: "General, Colonel, our reinforcements are here."
Tijani just said "hmm".
He was originally looking forward to the arrival of reinforcements, but after learning about the "two-day deadline", he lost interest in the reinforcements.
Several dark figures walked in. The kerosene lamp couldn't illuminate their faces. All we could see was that the leader was wearing a wide-brimmed hat and leggings, with a pistol on his waist. From his rank, we could tell he was a colonel.
"General Tijani?" The colonel looked at Charles and introduced himself in fluent English: "I am Richard, the commander of the 5th Australian Light Cavalry Regiment. Nice to meet you!"
(The picture above shows the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps landing in Gallipoli. Their uniforms imitate the old British Army uniforms.)
Charles turned his gaze to Tijani, who then came forward with little interest and shook hands with Colonel Richard: "Hello, Colonel Richard, welcome!"
Although I said this, I was thinking in my heart that you may not know that you are here to die.
"General." Colonel Richard was a little embarrassed because he recognized the wrong person. He saluted Tijani with an apologetic look on his face: "Please give the order, what should we do?"
He looked eager to try, as if he couldn't wait to go into battle and kill the enemy.
This made Charles feel a little strange, and there was something odd in his eyes when he looked at Richard.
The Australian army, don't they know that they are a colonial army? Don't they know that this war has nothing to do with them? Don't they know that they are being used by others?
If it is other aspects, such as wool, it would be fine.
But this is a war, which requires them to sacrifice their lives, shed blood and tears, and has no glory at all, so why are they so active?
This is actually because Charles is not well-informed.
He was in France and didn't know that the Australian Prime Minister immediately expressed his unconditional support for Britain and even made a bold statement: "Australia will stand firmly on the side of Britain until the last drop of blood!"
This is indeed the case. Australian soldiers performed more bravely than the British on the battlefield. For example, they defeated the British 29th Division on the Gallipoli battlefield.
Tijani was not surprised by this. He just said to Colonel Richard coldly, "Get familiar with the environment and consolidate the fortifications tonight. There may be a fierce battle tomorrow."
"Understood, General." Colonel Richard stood up and saluted with full energy.
Just as Colonel Richard turned to go out, a guard beside him exclaimed softly: "Colonel, that's Charles, I saw him on the ship!"
"What?" Colonel Richard turned his head suddenly, and his eyes swept across the command center and finally locked onto Charles, with a look of astonishment on his face: "You are, you are Charles?"
"Yes." Charles nodded.
Colonel Richard hurried forward to salute Charles, then nervously stretched out his hand:
"I am very sorry, Colonel, that I did not recognize you."
"I'm honored. I've heard of your name and your battles here..."
"A perfect plan, Colonel! It's simply a stroke of genius. It changes the entire situation of the war. I believe victory is not far away from us!"
Tijani smiled noncommittally.
Charles sighed inwardly, if you can't think of a solution, you will witness the failure of this plan in two days!
