Chapter 977: Insult

Chapter 977: Insult

Haig and Baker initially did not take the civilian "riots" seriously.

Haig even joked, asking the guards: "Targeting me? Is this Charles' new tactic? Is he going to drown me with the saliva of the French civilians?"

Baker laughed. He leaned over, took his coffee from the coffee table and took two sips, his movements relaxed and carefree.

The reason why they are fearless is that they are not French citizens and in principle have no intersection with the French military and civilians. The French people's protests have nothing to do with them.

What’s more important is that they have soldiers at their disposal, including millions of British and American expeditionary forces. What big waves can the protesting civilians cause?

"Did our soldiers accidentally injure French civilians?" Haig asked.

This kind of thing happens from time to time, as well as robbery and people who can't control their lower body. With a large number of troops and the pressure of war, it is inevitable that such things will happen.

However, the guard said: "No, General, they said... that you are collaborating with the Germans and are planning to kill Charles!"

In an instant, all the staff officers and signalmen in the office focused their attention on Haig.

Haig and Baker were stunned. They looked at each other, as if asking "how did they know this?"

Haig was a veteran general. He remained calm and laughed exaggeratedly: "Cooperate with the Germans? This is the funniest joke I have ever heard."

Baker had a natural smile on his face. As a politician, he was very good at disguising himself:

“There’s even a share for me?”

"They must have been used by German spies."

"It's a simple divisive tactic. The Germans are trying to divide us!"

This reason was very reasonable. Haig nodded in agreement: "Yes, that must be the case, these stupid guys!"

The staff officers believed them and continued with their work.

However, the guard said: "General, they said there is a recording, and your conversation has been published in the 'League of Nations'!"

Haig and Baker's faces changed, and they realized that the problem might not be as simple as they thought.

At this time, the phone rang, and the staff officer handed the microphone to Haig: "General, it's General Winter."

Heger suddenly felt that something was wrong.

General Winter has been in the League of Nations all the time, which is consistent with what the guards said. Is there really a recording?

He took the call with a doubtful look on his face. After listening for a while, his face gradually turned pale. He even asked, "Is there really a recording?"

Baker looked at Haig in astonishment, his hand holding the coffee cup shaking uncontrollably.

If there is a recording, it means his political career is completely over.

Who did it?

Haig slowly put down the phone, the receiver seemed to weigh a thousand pounds in his hand.

Just as he was stunned, a stone smashed the glass with a "bang", and the roar of civilians came from outside:

"Get out here, you shameless traitor, we need an explanation."

"It's no use hiding in there. You seem to have forgotten that this is France. You have to come out one day."

"Ciel saved you, and your soldiers, many times, you bastards!"

Haig panicked. He glanced at Baker, then hurriedly stood up, took his military cap from the hanger and put it on: "I need to go out for a while!"

Baker quickly stood up: "I'll go with you, General."

But as soon as he walked out the door, he was blocked by a group of soldiers.

They were "their own people", a mix of British and American soldiers, including Pershing and Patton.

"What are you doing?" Heiger ordered fiercely: "Get out of the way, I command you!"

Instead of moving away, the soldiers took a step closer.

Pershing didn't say anything, he didn't know what to say.

Patton stepped forward and glanced at Haig, finally his eyes fell on Baker.

"Is what they say true?" Patton asked in a cold voice.

"What?" Baker pretended to be confused.

Barton fixed his eyes on Baker and asked word by word:

"We can clearly defeat the Germans, so why should we retreat?"

"The purpose of the retreat is to leave Charles's First Panzer Corps to the Germans, right?"

"Is this your 'gift' to the Germans?"

The British and American soldiers around him asked:

"Do you know how many people we lost during the retreat? You're telling me now that it was all meaningless?"

"Its purpose is to destroy the First Armored Army and Charles?"

"You make me sick, fuck the politicians!"

Perhaps feeling the murderous intent in the soldier's eyes, Baker was so frightened that he was speechless.

Haig stepped forward to explain: "No, it's not what you think..."

"Bang!"

Before he could finish his words, Haig was knocked to the ground with a heavy punch.

The British and American soldiers rushed forward and punched and kicked the two men, cursing:

"You betrayed us, you betrayed everyone!"

"This is for Ciel, this is for me, and this is for the soldiers you deceived!"

"Fuck you, I've had enough, you've made cowards out of us all!"

Haig's guards stood aside, most of them just shouted a few times but did not move. A few tried to step forward to dissuade them, but were stopped by several soldiers with murderous looks on their faces:

"Hey, relax, man."

“They don’t deserve it.”

"Want to compete with us?"

Behind them, more soldiers rushed over, and the protesting civilians also heard the news and crowded over here, cheering.

At this moment, a magical scene appeared: this situation had never happened on any battlefield before. The British, American, French and civilians all united together just to throw a few punches or spit.

The chaotic scene lasted for more than ten minutes.

In the end, Pershing rescued the two men. He was worried that if someone died, the nature of the incident would change from "beating the superior" to "mutiny" and "rebellion."

He loudly ordered everyone to stop, and took the guards to carry the man out on a stretcher.

Haig and Baker were covered in wounds and bruises. They lay on stretchers, covering their wounds and groaning.

But that’s not all.

Angry civilians continued to throw stones and rotten eggs at them until the stretcher was loaded onto the car.

Unfortunately, the stretcher-bearer fell while getting on the car, and Haig fell headfirst to the ground, cursing in pain.

However, when the stretcher-bearer jumped off the car and stepped on his hand again, Haig seemed to understand something and dared not say anything anymore.

Pershing walked to the front of the car and patted on the door.

The driver stuck his head out: "General."

Pershing ordered: "Go to the airport."

"Shouldn't we go to the field hospital?" The driver looked towards the back of the car.

"No," Pershing replied, with a hint of sarcasm: "If we send them to a field hospital, they will not come out alive."

"Understood, General," the driver replied, with a hint of regret in his eyes.

Pershing waved to the driver again, and the driver craned his neck a little closer.

Pershing lowered his voice: "Drive slower, you have plenty of time!"

The driver understood and responded loudly: "Yes, General!"
