Chapter 3: Building an Empire

The next day, Zhao Jun slept until noon.

It should be said that Ying Zheng probably didn't want to make things difficult for her. He just locked her up in an empty room and didn't take her to jail.

She rubbed her sore eyes, stood up and stretched her waist. She wondered when Ying Zheng would come to see her. He couldn't just leave her here all the time. Besides, she didn't see anyone bringing her food. Did he want to starve her to death?

Suddenly, just as Zhao Jun stretched and was about to call for help, several tiny voices came from outside, as if someone was talking.

"Have you heard? Prince Fusu was punished by the king again today."

"Why? How could someone as gentle as Prince Fusu..."

"I heard that it was the young master who spoke on behalf of Changping Jun in the court today. You know the king's temper, and he was furious and punished the young master."

"Forget it, these are not our concerns. Let's hurry up and get some ice for the Queen Mother. Alas, there's not much ice left in the Heavenly Palace in this heat. Let's go."

Mr. Zhao leaned over and listened carefully for a few words.

They must be servants in the palace. I don’t know if someone is gossiping in this room.

However, judging from what they said, Ying Zheng might not be in a very good mood today, so he should be careful when he speaks later.

Sure enough, someone came after a while. Two burly soldiers took her to Ying Zheng's bedroom, the same room she had been in last night.

Zhao Jun looked around along the way. The architecture of the Qin Emperor's Palace at this time was completely incomparable to the later Forbidden City. It was not so magnificent but had a gray feel. It was probably because they had not yet started to exploit the blood of the workers.

When Zhao Jun was approaching the bedroom, he saw a shadow kneeling at the door from afar. When he got closer, he found that it was a child about twelve or thirteen years old. He was kneeling straight with a sad look on his face.

"Prince Fusu, please stop like this. The king asked you to get up and go back to the palace." A hunched eunuch came out and said.

"Father still refuses to see me." The young man lowered his brows and murmured softly.

"My lord, please listen to my advice and don't get involved in the affairs of the State of Chu. The king won't listen. Why bother to bring bad luck upon the king?" After saying that, the eunuch went back without saying anything else.

"Your Majesty, the person has been brought here."

"Okay, all of you go down and don't let anyone in."

Finally, Zhao Jun saw Ying Zheng again. Unlike last night when he looked at him under the dim candlelight, today Zhao Jun looked carefully at the man not far away.

I think no one would not be curious about this legendary emperor of all ages, and Zhao Jun is no exception. He looks very young, wearing a dark black robe, with long hair neatly tied up high, a pair of phoenix eyes that are intimidating and angry, and traces of years of frowning between his eyebrows. His sharp thin lips may indicate that he is a heartless person. When his eyes look at you, you can feel that there are surging waves and domineering power that sweeps away everything.

"Hello, my king. I never thought we would meet one day. I believe you believed what I said last night. That piece of glass over there is the one I gave you on the third day we met."

It seemed that the mirror last night gave her some confidence. Zhao Jun was not so scared anymore, and she had the capital to make a deal.

Ever since Zhao Jun came in, Ying Zheng had been observing her silently, and he was already 90% convinced of her origins.

"Then how did you suddenly appear here? What is your purpose in coming here?" He sat on the couch and stared at Zhao Jun.

"My coming here is God's choice. You will become the greatest emperor who will unify the world in the future. I am here to help you."

Zhao Jun said half-truthfully that it would be better not to tell him about the mirror for now.

"Oh, really? Then how can you help me? Didn't you say you were an immortal? Then give me an elixir of immortality first."

No, Ying Zheng, oh Ying Zheng, you want the elixir of immortality, no wonder you were deceived by Xu Fu!

"Well, there is no such elixir of immortality." Zhao Jun glanced at Ying Zheng's gloomy face. "But that doesn't mean there won't be one in the future, right?"

What if the system can be connected to the fairyland in the future? Let’s start drawing the pie.

"Really? What if you don't live to see that day?" he threatened.

"How could that be? I'm such a talented person, Your Majesty, I'm sure you won't waste me. I will definitely work hard to help you build your empire and let you see my abilities."

Why does this sound so familiar? It seems like the promise I made to my boss when I was applying for a job. Now Ying Zheng is my boss. The difference is that my previous boss could only decide my salary, but now my boss can decide my life and death.

"Okay, then I will give you a chance. Stay in Qin and build the empire well."

Ying Zheng suddenly spoke in a loud voice, which frightened the King of Zhao.

"So, I will first appoint you as the Imperial Lady Historian and let you temporarily live in the palace. You must quickly think about how to build the empire," he shouted to the outside, "Sun Cheng, this is the newly appointed Imperial Lady Historian. She will serve in front of the palace from now on. You will make arrangements."

The person who walked in was the eunuch from before. He responded and took Zhao Jun out.

"I'll take you to your residence first. This is where you'll live. Most of the people serving in the Imperial Court live here. It's close together, and the rooms are two to a room. The one you'll be living with is Qingliu, but she's probably out on duty right now. By the way, I don't know her name yet."

Along the way, Sun Cheng secretly looked at this suddenly appeared female historian. He had never heard of her before. Could it be that she was kept by the king?

"Oh, my name is Zhao Jun. I know the basics. By the way, I want to ask where the kitchen is."

She had asked almost all the questions along the way, and she would have to wait for more information later. She should fill her stomach first. She hadn't eaten since last night and was extremely hungry.

"Oh, the kitchen is just to the west. Just keep walking along this road and you'll get there. I won't take you there. I have to go back to work."

"Okay, it's okay. I can go there myself. You go ahead and do your work."

After seeing Sun Cheng off, Zhao Jun immediately walked towards the kitchen. After a while, she saw a not very big house with only about three or four people working there. She was standing aside and happened to meet someone from the imperial court who came to serve Ying Zheng a meal.

She took a quick glance and saw a pile of unknown vegetables in the bowl. It didn't look very appetizing, and she suddenly felt uneasy about the upcoming lunch.

"Who are you? Are you here to get lunch?" A middle-aged woman who looked like an old lady shouted at Zhao Jun who was standing there in a daze, "Why are you still standing there? Come and get it." The old lady waved at her enthusiastically.

"Well, I'm from the Imperial Court, here to get lunch."

Zhao Jun walked into the kitchen hesitantly.

"Hey, Your Highness, come and get it. Today's lunch includes stewed meat and pickled meat, both of which are delicious."

The old lady greeted her very warmly and brought her two bowls of food.

Zhao Jun silently looked at the delicious food she mentioned.

Chunao, a sauce made from someone unknown stuff, is sticky and has a slightly fishy smell.

The pickled meat looked like mutton slices, with a strong mutton smell.

She looked at it for a long time but still didn't do anything.

Is this something delicious?

It seems that I have no idea about the hardships of this era?!
