Chapter 1 Don't Pick Up Red Envelopes on the Roadside

It was June, and Helue Town in the south of the Yangtze River was overcast and rainy, with few pedestrians on the streets.

Rain symbolizes the blessings of heaven and earth, but sometimes it can also be extremely annoying.

The worn-out umbrella could not shield my body, and the dampness on my tarsal bones made me uncomfortable, especially since the clothes I wore did not fit me well, making it even more difficult to move.

"Sure enough, when people are unlucky, nothing goes well for them."

Kong Hanan tried his best to shrink under the oil-paper fan, muttered something with a bitter smile, and walked towards the nearby intersection in the wind and rain.

He also held a red paper bag in his hand.

After a while, Kong Hanan arrived at the intersection. He looked around until he saw the plaque of the Gu Mansion. Only then did he confirm that he had arrived at his destination. He said:

"Brother Ghost, Uncle Ghost, please be kind and I will return the money to you in full. Please stop relying on me!"

After saying that, he carefully placed the red envelope on the ground.

Kong Hanan was originally a poor scholar. His parents died early and he had no property. The Gu family was a famous big family in Helue Town. The old man of the Gu family was once a county governor in the country. Because of his old age, he retired and returned to his hometown.

Three days ago, it was the old man of the Gu family’s 70th birthday. Kong Hanan went to the house with a shameless face to ask for free food and drinks, and saw the red envelope when he turned the corner.

It was also his fault for being greedy. He originally thought it was dropped by a careless guest, and after picking it up, he was happy thinking he had made a profit. It was not until he got home and opened it that Kong Hanan realized something was wrong.

The banknotes in the red envelopes were clearly printed with the words "Tian Di Qian Zhuang"!

How could Kong Hanan not know that this was ghost money? He thought it was a prank and was still sighing in his heart that people in this era really knew how to play, but since then, countless strange things have happened in his family.

For example, the doors and windows are closed, but the curtains will open automatically without any wind!

It’s not my heart beating, it’s the curtain that really moved by itself!

For example, the boots placed by the door always move on their own!

Kong Hanan dared to swear that he was the only one at home!

The strangest thing is that from then on, Kong Hanan had nightmares every day. He dreamed that he was sleeping in bed and a figure was slowly approaching him from outside his door, waking him up.

In this dream, there were some changes in the details every day, and the figure was getting closer and closer to him.

But it tortured Kong Hanan badly.

He had consulted a fortune teller in the town, who told him that he was being targeted by an evil ghost, and that the money in the red envelope was for his life. The ghost in his dream was an omen, and that the day the ghost possessed him would be the day he died.

Kong Han'an was worried. The Taoist masters who were chivalrous and did not ask for money only existed in legends. He was just a poor scholar who had no money to hire someone to perform a ritual.

He tried many methods, such as burning the red envelope, throwing it into the river, and burying it, but the red envelope still appeared beside him and he had the dream every day.

Kong Hanan wondered if he wasn't sincere enough, so this time, he went to the intersection where he had found the money, begged for mercy, and put the red envelope back where it came from.

Hope all goes well...

He returned to the dilapidated house, which was the only inheritance left to him by his deceased parents. At least it gave him a place to live.

The plum rain is sticky, and the wind and rain are rushing, so you have to take a bath. After washing up and changing clothes, Kong Hanan looked at himself in the bronze mirror.

He has thick eyebrows and big eyes, and apart from his pale face, he has a good appearance. No wonder he is targeted by ghosts.

Wait! I'm not laughing!

Kong Hanan looked at his face in the mirror stretching and pulling to both sides, revealing a weird smile. His expression changed drastically, and he turned and rushed out of the bathroom.

Sure enough, he saw the red envelope on the desk in the study.

The wet red paper, as if soaked in blood, was dazzling. It was the one he had placed at the intersection of Gu Mansion not long ago.

"Fuck you!"

Seeing this scene, Kong Hanan could no longer suppress the anger in his heart. He threw the red envelope to the ground, trampling on it while cursing.

"Are you sick? I'm giving it back to you and you don't want it?"

"My life is worthless. You could give me some real money so I can enjoy my last few days. But you're just giving me ghost money. Who are you looking down on?"

The lights in the study flickered, and Kong Hanan vaguely saw two shadows, perhaps because of the angle.

He is a person who goes with the flow and likes to be reasonable when doing things, but this ghost clearly refuses to reason with him, so don't blame Kong Hanan for being unsportsmanlike!

After changing into a decent set of clothes, putting the red envelope in his pocket and counting some of the few silver coins in the house, Kong Hanan went out again.

This world is not the world Kong Hanan was familiar with. The country is called Qi and it respects traditional Taoism. Kong Hanan, who inherited his memory, naturally knows that the Great Emperor Tianqi Rensheng of Mount Tai in the East is in charge of rewards and punishments, nobility and inferiority, life and death.

The place Kong Hanan wanted to go was the Dongyue Temple in the town. Since there were ghosts, there must be gods.

"Hmph, if you have the guts, go and buy your life with the Emperor of Dongyue!"

Kong Hanan sneered and stuffed the red envelope into the merit box. He then sincerely bowed to the statue of Emperor Dongyue on the main seat, who was dressed in ethereal green clothes, had a white face, beautiful beard and phoenix eyes. He then turned around and saluted the Taoist boy beside him.

"Master, I've been having nightmares recently and would like to stay in the temple for one night. I wonder if these fees are enough?"

As he said this, he took out some change with a look of heartache.

There was no other way. Although Kong Hanan came to Dongyue Temple to seek refuge based on the theory that where there are ghosts there are gods, he still felt uneasy. He decided to spend a night in the temple to see if he would have nightmares at night.

Taoist practice emphasizes wealth, friends, and land, but Kong Hanan has already put a red envelope in the merit box. The Taoist boy was a little confused and did not intend to accept Kong Hanan's change.
