It was three o'clock in the morning.
County magistrate Zhong Shubai lay on the bed with lifeless eyes.
His career as a county magistrate in Yaoshan came to an end.
During the day, he received an order from the county magistrate Wang Dong to transfer him to the county office.
He pushed, he got the credit, he calculated everything...
But he didn't expect that the county governor would be wary of him because he was too close to the Xu family of Yaoshan.
A helpless smile appeared on Zhong Shubai's face.
He is a small person, but small people also have small people's lives.
Zhong Shubai was able to get a minor official position thanks to the Confucian reform.
After years of hard work, he finally became a county magistrate.
Right now, the county magistrate Wang Dong doesn't like him. After this transfer order, he may lose his official position and receive a meager salary. What will happen to his family?
From Jiange County to the north, through Han County, Shang County, and Beidi County thousands of miles away, there is a Zhongnan Mountain.
His home is at the foot of Mount Zhongnan.
He has an elderly wife at home and a pair of children in their twenties who need to be supported.
Thinking of his family, Zhong Shubai began to feel distressed.
This pain can't be stopped.
Zhong Shubai began to have difficulty breathing and was covered in cold sweat.
He wanted to call for help, but the pain was so intense that he couldn't even utter a word.
Am I going to die?
I can’t die yet!!
Zhong Shubai rolled out of bed, trying to attract attention, but heard no sound.
He looked towards the bed, only to see himself lying there with his face pale and his eyes wide open.
He is dead.
Zhong Shubai felt a deep fear in his heart.
"Oh no, we're not late."
"There's nothing we can do. General Ma is away, City God Xu is busy training his troops and trying criminals, and the Lord of the Mansion is fighting in Ghost Country with a large army. There's really no one here. We're new recruits at Ghost Gate and aren't familiar with the business. The Lord of the Mansion shouldn't blame us."
I heard voices in my ears.
Zhong Shubai looked in the direction of the voice and saw two people floating in the room.
One of them had a pale face, and the other had a dark blue face. They were wearing clothes made of unknown material with the word "zu" (pawn) painted on it. Although the clothes covered their wounds, one could still see the hideous wounds on their bodies, and they looked extremely terrifying.
This is a ghost!
Zhong Shubai was terrified.
Although he was an official, he was difficult for ordinary ghosts to invade.
But he is dead now. Who knows whether the destiny of the Great Qi will protect the dead official?
Zhong Shubai rolled and crawled, trying to escape.
The two men found him under the bed.
"Zhong Shubai, don't panic. We are the ghost messengers from the Ghost Gate of the Netherworld. Your life span is over, and we have been instructed by the Lord of the Netherworld to take you to the Netherworld."
Zhong Shubai has heard of the underworld.
Recently, there have been rumors about the underworld everywhere in Jiange County. Even the Xu family in Yaoshan Town has begun to promote the underworld.
But whoever wants to go to your underworld, no matter who your master is.
Who wants to die when they can live?
There must be another way.
Zhong Shubai was about to run when he heard a hum.
I saw a chain floating from the air and tied him up tightly.
"I knew you shouldn't have said that much nonsense. Just tie him up!"
The ghost messenger with a sullen face said so.
Zhong Shubai was tied up and unable to move, so he had to kowtow repeatedly.
"Officers, please let me go this time. At least let me go home and see my family."
The white-faced ghost shook his head.
"No, the Lord called your name three days ago and wants you to die tonight. How dare we keep you any longer? Come with us."
A huge force came from the chains, and Zhong Shubai felt dizzy. The strong feeling of weightlessness made him close his eyes. After a dizzy spell, he managed to keep his balance.
When he opened his eyes again, what he saw was no longer the familiar county government office, but mountains and hills.
Amidst the mountains and rivers, there is a narrow path, which is densely populated with ghosts.
There were also ghosts dressed like the two ghost messengers walking around to maintain order.
Before Zhong Shubai recovered from the shock of death, the chain pulled him again.
"Come on, follow us through the gates of hell."
Thanks to the fact that he was the person the Lord specifically asked to see, Zhong Shubai cut in line and bypassed many ghosts.
There were occasional complaints, but when they heard that this was the person the Lord of the Underworld specifically wanted to see, they were so scared that they stopped talking.
After walking for an unknown amount of time, Zhong Shubai gradually calmed down.
But once I calmed down, fear arose in my heart.
Who is this Lord of the Underworld? When did I ever offend him? Why did he specifically target me?
In the midst of anxiety, a barrier appeared in Zhong Shubai's eyes.
The pass is rugged and towering. Beside the pass, there is a rushing river. On the winding path stands a stone tablet with the words "Ghost Gate" engraved on it.
The main gate of Ghost Gate was closed, only the small gates on the left and right sides were open. No wonder there was such a long queue.
Standing behind the door was a slightly fat man with a scar on his face.
The man was wearing armor and holding a long-handled sword, standing on the top and looking around at the area below the pass.
All the ghosts in line were obedient and entered through the left door. Occasionally, someone who was noticed by the man would be quickly dragged into the right door by the ghost officials without any sound.
The white-faced ghost explained in a low voice, "This is General Zhou Cang, the guard of Ghost Gate. He is also a top-notch warrior in the underworld. He was once the brother of the Martial Saint and can judge the greatest evil. If someone has committed serious sins in his life, he will be able to see through them. As for their fate, hehe."
These two hums frightened Zhong Shubai and he began to reflect on whether he had made any mistakes in his life.
Seeing the three ghosts approaching, the ghost glanced over and Zhong Shubai was frightened.
