As it turned out, Hammer was wrong.
The script of this movie is not ordinary, but has some twists and turns.
After watching the movie, when the final production list appeared, Hammer remained silent.
"So, all this is a dream experienced by the protagonist, a dream about the past?"
He couldn't help but ask Lu Ban.
"Hongye died many years ago, and her ghost wanted to make amends, so she helped the protagonist kill herself?"
“Is this island real, or is it just an illusion in the fog?”
"If the entire island is engulfed by the fire that Hongye ignited at the end, how will the protagonist survive?"
Hammer has many questions.
When he saw the ending, Hongye's memory flashed back to those cruel and tragic scenes. When he saw Hongye burning herself and dispelling the fog of the entire island, and when he saw the first ray of sunlight penetrate the fog and illuminate Lu Ban who was shrouded in pale flames, instead of the excitement of seeing the ending, he felt more of a melancholy.
It was clearly just a short film of just over an hour, but for some reason, Hammer felt as if he had really been through an adventure with this witch, and a faint sadness was hard to dispel.
He did not wait for Lu Ban's answer, but came to the aisle by the window of the studio, slowly lit a cigarette, and tried to let the irritating gas flow through his lungs to ease his emotional fluctuations.
However, when the smoke entered his respiratory tract, Hammer inexplicably remembered the feeling of being at the shrine on the top of the mountain shrouded in fog. He coughed violently several times before putting out the cigarette and returning to the screening room.
He saw that his assistant was also in a daze, immersed in the film, unable to extricate himself.
When Lu Ban saw the situation of the two people, he was sure that there must be something wrong with his movie.
However, this problem is not serious. It is not like what happened with Sadako's video tape, where someone would have a heart attack and die on the spot after watching it.
This is more like an infectious disease, a memetic contamination, and people who see it will feel immersed in it, as if they are in the scenes of the film.
For example, in the ocean scene at the beginning, people will feel chest tightness and shortness of breath.
The unpredictable fog at the mountaintop shrine makes your lungs feel like they are burning and you want to cough.
When playing Hyakunin Isshu, I felt like I couldn’t move, couldn’t speak, and couldn’t even close my eyes.
Of course, the sounds coming from the four corners were nothing special; they were just stereo sounds edited by Lu Ban.
But in Hammer's opinion, this is simply awesome.
Just think about it, when watching a movie you can feel the same environment and have the same emotions as the characters in the movie. This sense of immersion can probably only be compared to having a tube inserted in the back of your head.
As for the movies that Hammer has watched in the past, he feels that as long as they can move him, make his blood boil, and make him terrified, that’s enough.
But now, Lu Ban’s movies are not at all about touching people through the perception transformed by visual and auditory senses, but are completely about their own personal experience. Even the simplest scenes and emotions can create huge waves in one’s heart.
"Director Lu... Mr. Lu, I feel like I have a lot of inspiration in my head right now. Your work is so amazing. It's the first time I've seen such an immersive movie. Believe me, I will be able to create a suitable soundtrack for your work soon... No, please let me compose the soundtrack for your film!"
Perhaps because the shock was so great, or perhaps because music producers are inherently more emotional, Hammer suddenly felt that it was his responsibility to compose this soundtrack.
In the film industry, the soundtrack sometimes depends on the director's ideas. Many directors have their own team, including photography, special effects, and soundtrack. Just like the animation master from the island country, if he lacks his own soundtrack, can those animations still touch people's hearts?
So, after watching Lu Ban’s movie, Hammer made up his mind that he would take charge of the soundtrack for the movie.
Although part of the reason was that the other party gave too much, Hammer was still an aspiring music producer. Producing records for young idols was not enough to satisfy him. His ultimate goal was to create timeless soundtracks for truly world-class blockbusters.
"Well, I haven't said anything about where music is needed..."
Lu Ban reminded.
"...Okay, let's see what needs music now. Just tell me. I can handle any style..."
Hammer immediately responded.
"Well, for example, here, I think we can add some Japanese-style, gentle music, like the opening music of a play, do you understand?"
Lu Ban said to the video played back in reverse, the scene where "Lu Ban" and others entered Uta Island.
"……I see!"
Without saying a word, Hammer immediately went to the electronic keyboard, made some simple adjustments, and then played a melody.
It has an antique flavor, yet has a Japanese-style sad quality.
Moreover, Lu Ban discovered that the melody seemed to be a variation of the song hummed by the shrine maiden.
“That’s amazing!”
Lu Ban applauded.
“I was thinking that we could use a main melody throughout this film, apply different variations to different scenes, and intersperse other melodies.”
Hammer suggested that some movies would have rich and colorful soundtracks, with different characters being accompanied by different instruments, while other movies would use a main melody and express different emotions through variations.
“And in the scene of going up the mountain, I think the performance of this instrument will be very good.”
Hammer took out another strangely shaped musical instrument. The bow and strings looked like a violin, but he couldn't find the strings.
He played a little in the second half of the piece.
A creepy and strange sound was heard, just like the sound effect when a ghost appears for a moment in a horror movie, which reminded Lu Ban of his memories of watching movies.
"This is a water organ, a special effects instrument used to create scary sounds."
Hammer explained enthusiastically and quickly composed two separate melodies.
He now feels that good works can indeed inspire the desire to create. There are several melodies lingering in Hammer's mind. These melodies are like whispers in his ears and cannot be dispelled for a long time. It seems that if Hammer does not compose them, these melodies will gnaw at his brain like worms and cause his consciousness to collapse.
Hammer thinks that perhaps those great musicians, the great men who composed famous songs overnight, also had similar feelings.
The music composition work went smoothly. Three days later, Lu Ban got the music he wanted. During this period, Lu Ban was not idle. Instead, he re-processed the rough cut sample, refined the shots and expressions, and spent another two days blending the music into it. By the end of the second week, Lu Ban already had a sample that could be watched directly.
“Next, we need to find a website to submit for review.”
Lu Ban muttered to himself and clicked on several video websites.
