Chapter 387 Pressure Comes to the Golden Bear Awards

Just when Lu Ban was winning numerous awards in Cannes, the Golden Bear Award jury in Berlin began to worry.

According to current normal rules, one cannot participate in the three major film festivals at the same time.

In other words, if you want to win an award at this film festival, you must premiere at this film festival. Therefore, in the past decade or so, no film has won the grand prizes of two film festivals at the same time.

This is somewhat mutually exclusive.

After all, according to the judges' standards, if a film wins the Palme d'Or, it naturally should not win the Golden Bear or Golden Lion.

After all, writers always look down on each other. If you think something is good, I will definitely find some fault with it, otherwise it will always feel like I am following your lead in judging the award.

But this time, "Spring Day Without War" made the Golden Bear Award judges a little unsure.

These judges had all seen the film in France and were naturally shocked by it.

If "Spring Days Without War" premiered at the Berlin Film Festival, there would be no doubt that all the Golden Bear Awards and related awards would belong to Lu Ban, and he could get as many as he wanted!

But now, the Palme d'Or has taken the lead and awarded the grand prize.

What about our Golden Bear Award?

If you say that Lu Ban should not be allowed to participate in the exhibition, then wouldn't the quality of the works winning the Golden Bear Awards this year be more than a dozen Golden Lion Awards worse than the Palme d'Or?

But if Lu Ban were allowed to participate in the exhibition, wouldn't people say that the Golden Bear Award's aesthetic taste is poor and that he is just following the trend?

The judges were extremely conflicted.

Of course, they finally compromised.

Just imagine, if future generations look back at the works of this year's three major art film festivals and find that the Palme d'Or won "Spring Days Without a Quiet Place", while the Golden Bear and Golden Lion won other films, would they doubt the level of the Golden Bear Award's judging?

What's even more terrible is that if the Golden Bear Award didn't include "Spring No Quiet" in the selection according to the rules, but those Italian guys who eat potatoes every day made an exception and let "Spring No Quiet" win the Golden Lion Award.

Then where would the reputation of our great Germany be?

With this in mind, the judges accepted the entry for "Haruhi no Shinobi".

It stands to reason that if "Spring Days Without War" swept Cannes, it will also sweep Berlin.

In July, at the Golden Bear Awards, which are rarely held in the summer, "Spring Days Without War" completed a grand slam, winning several major awards including the Golden Bear Award for Best Film, the Silver Bear Award for Best Director, Best Actor and Best Screenplay.

At this point, the only thing left for "Spring Days Without a Fight" to win at the three major art film festivals is the Golden Lion Award in Venice.

As this film is released in various countries and regions one after another, more and more people are feeling what "Lu Ban's healing effect" means.

In North America, a special commentator of the New York Times commented on Lu Ban's work:

"'Spring Day Without a Fight' is a film that guides people to feel hope by showing despair. Like many war films, although it depicts every bit of war in detail, it actually arouses the fear and disgust of war among the general public by truly showing the cruelty of war, and achieves the purpose of anti-war. There is no doubt that this film directed by Lu Ban uses the detailed description and portrayal of a world full of despair and the destruction of beautiful things to arouse the audience's hatred and fear of such a world, so as to cherish the existing world more and be full of hope for life. Therefore, it can be said that this is a film against despair!"

In the UK, The Times interviewed a professor of image and communication at Cambridge University and asked her about her opinion on Spring No War. She said:

"'Spring Day Without a Fight' is an experimental film jointly completed by the audience, director, and actors. After watching the plot, the audience becomes a part of the plot, and they and other viewers who have not yet watched the plot jointly interpret the content of the plot. Director Lu Ban uses delicate emotions, gorgeous pictures, and cruel plots to make the audience empathize, thus achieving the current effect. It can be said that such scripts may appear in the future, such directors may appear in the future, and such actors may appear in the future, but the only one that can achieve perfection with the overlap of the three is 'Spring Day Without a Fight'."

The island nation, as the country that is most similar to the background and island in "Haruhi no Shizuo", their report "Yomiuri Shimbun" angrily denounced Riku Kan's film.

"Although the island culture shown in "Haruhi no Shiki" is impeccable and fully embodies the beauty of mono no aware, the island government is by no means the same as our government. Our country would never do something like the one in the movie to deceive and harm innocent girls. Director Lu Ban's act of satirizing our traditional culture in a veiled way through the movie is a blasphemy to art!"

Of course, despite all the criticism, "Spring Day Without a Battle" quickly took first place at the box office in the island country. Coupled with the island people's mentality of taking things seriously, the box office continued to rise and quickly reached the number one position of the year.

Wang Qing, a reporter from China Film Report, had the honor of interviewing Lu Ban and wrote a brief interview.

Q: Director Lu Ban, what do you think of the international acclaim for "Spring Day Without a Fight"?

A: I believe that art has no borders. This movie can make everyone feel something similar, transcending culture and country. This shows that our human civilization has certain commonalities, and these commonalities are the bonds that maintain our society.

Q: What do you think about the negative reviews from the island country’s official media?

A: What I show is the scenery of the island. It may have some similarities with the real country, but it is actually completely different. As for some people's behavior of taking it personally, I can only doubt how much free time they have.

Q: Some people say that you are a domestic director, but you use the background and culture of other countries to make movies, which is suspected of being pro-Western. What do you think?

A: Stories need a suitable carrier. This story takes place on Hedao Island, which is something that neither you nor I can change. I cannot hypocritically tamper with what has happened. My best quality is honesty.

Q: Some critics also said that you used the label of healing people's hearts, but in the end you presented an extremely cruel story, and you were suspected of using these propaganda to deceive the audience. What do you think?

A: I don't think there is a conflict. There are a thousand Hamlets for a thousand readers. Some people think my movie is cruel, some think it is healing, and some may think that the ending of the movie is not dark and cruel enough. It is precisely because we can see many different things from one ending that the story can be pondered and savored over and over again.

Q: Finally, a question about Amber. Her actress has not appeared yet. Is this some kind of publicity or expression method?

A: Why don’t I let her answer this question herself?

Q: Where is Miss Amber?

A: She is right here.
