The car drove slowly forward, and Bi Qiaoan fell asleep in less than half an hour.
By the time she wakes up, we'll be almost at Haishi.
"How long have I been asleep?" Bi Qiaoan felt her mouth was wet. She wiped it with her finger, and then her cheeks turned bright red.
Shen Yanming naturally noticed her little gesture, and instead of finding it disgusting, he actually found it rather cute. Perhaps, this is what they mean by "beauty is in the eye of the beholder"?
"We'll be in Haishi in two hours," Shen Yanming said with a smile.
"Oh!" Bi Qiaoan nodded and looked out the window. In the distance, everything was lush and green, with tall trees, verdant grass, corn cobs with red silk threads, and wheat ears covered with needle-like awns.
Before she could even reminisce about being back in the human world, Shen Yanming reminded her, "The signal has been restored here, and you can use your phone now."
"Oh, really? How did you know?" Bi Qiaoan exclaimed excitedly, quickly taking her phone out of her bag and turning it on. Sure enough, a dozen seconds later, she saw a full signal, followed by various text messages and app push notifications.
Of course, there were also messages from friends on instant messaging software.
"We stopped at the service station for a 15-minute break. We saw someone using a mobile phone, so we went up and asked them about it."
Shen Yanming found it somewhat amusing as he recounted how their group had surrounded a young man, scaring him so much he thought they were robbing him. Then, after asking such a idiotic question, they were suspected of having escaped from some cave.
"I checked online and found that power has been restored in Haishi and most buildings can continue to be used. This earthquake has not had a major impact on life."
"That's wonderful!" Bi Qiaoan said while checking her unread messages on her phone. After she cleared all the red dots, she looked up at Shen Yanming with bright eyes. "If that's the case, then our house should be fine. So where will we live when we get back?"
"Where do you want to stay?" Shen Yanming asked instead of answering.
"Of course it's Qingyu Residential Area. All the people we know are there, and the land is there too. That's where we feel at home. As for the security team, it feels like a dormitory, and we don't know anyone there."
“Then we’ll stay at the guard station on weekdays and go back to Qingyu Community on Sundays.” Shen Yanming knew that Bi Qiaoan didn’t like interacting with strangers, but that was the reality. They would be working and living at the guard station from now on, so they couldn’t be separated from the masses.
“Okay, it’s fine to live there. It will save a lot of time on weekdays.” Bi Qiaoan was just saying that. She didn’t have a strong aversion to the dormitory. As long as she could be with Shen Yanming, she didn’t care where she lived.
Shen Yanming smiled, "Don't think too much about it. Just wait for our arrangements when we get back."
"Um!"
Two hours passed in the blink of an eye. Before entering the city, Bi Qiaoan noticed an intersection without cameras, bent down and released the goose.
The goose almost went crazy when it saw the scene change.
Oh no! It almost caught the little female goose! You heartless woman!
The goose looked at Bi Qiaoan with resentment, but the woman didn't even glance at it, preoccupied with flirting with her male owner.
Shen Yanming did notice that something was wrong with the goose, but he was enjoying his wife's tenderness and didn't want a little thing to ruin the atmosphere.
And so, the goose was completely ignored, but it got used to it, because that was the norm in Suzhou.
Soon, Shen Yanming and his team arrived at the Haishi Guard Team's parking lot. As soon as they got out of the car, they received a warm welcome.
After briefly reporting the situation to his superiors, Li Gangtie had the young soldier lead the group to the canteen for a meal.
There was no other way; after driving for several hours and it was almost noon, everyone was hungry.
The guards' lunch was quite substantial, consisting of rice or steamed buns, along with several side dishes such as shredded potatoes, scrambled eggs with tomatoes, romaine lettuce, shiitake mushrooms and wood ear fungus, and green peppers with sliced meat, and finally a seaweed soup. Although they couldn't have it all, a meal with two dishes was still acceptable.
Everyone exclaimed once again, "This is what life is like!" They had been drinking thin rice porridge for more than half a month and had almost forgotten the taste of vegetables.
They were all incredibly excited, and forgot all about etiquette. After getting their food, they shoveled it into their mouths, leaving the passing guards stunned.
After learning that they had just returned from Suzhou, they nodded in understanding.
There's no way around it; anyone who's been through it understands!
Shen Yanming and Bi Qiaoan originally wanted to go back to their dorm to rest for a while, but in order not to stand out, they had no choice but to go to the cafeteria with the crowd. It was just that their darling goose couldn't be brought along, so they had to leave it in the car and come back to pick it up after they finished eating.
To compensate the goose that had to go hungry alone, Shen Yanming generously poured half a bowl of spiritual spring water and placed it on the floor of the passenger seat. The already cramped space became even smaller because the goose was worried about knocking the bowl over.
There was nothing else Shen Yanming could do but pick up the bowl again and wait until the goose had finished drinking before putting it away.
Then, using Bi Qiaoan's bag as cover, she grabbed a handful of dried fruit from her storage space and, while bending down to pet the goose, secretly scattered it under the car seat.
The goose's eyes lit up immediately. Not caring whether it would be locked in a big iron box, it squatted down and stretched its neck to reach for the small fruits.
Shen Yanming and Bi Qiaoan left the car window slightly ajar before leaving. When they arrived at the cafeteria, everyone was already eating.
Looking at the dazzling array of dishes, the two didn't try to grab the ones with meat. They only ordered two steamed buns, a serving of romaine lettuce, and a serving of shiitake mushrooms and wood ear fungus. Then they sat down and began to eat slowly and leisurely.
However, before they had finished eating, Li Gangtie arrived and brought everyone some big news.
"Um, everyone stop for a moment, I have something to announce." Li Gangtie sat down in front of everyone with a serious expression.
When everyone saw his dark face, their hearts skipped a beat. They wondered if there was another task or if they had failed the assessment.
Everyone put down their chopsticks, their hearts filled with panic, awaiting the verdict from the dark-faced man.
Li Gangtie coughed and said, "You all know that going to Suzhou is not only about providing support, but also about assessment, right? After the joint evaluation by the two guard teams, we feel that your performance is unsatisfactory."
Therefore, upon officially joining the Haishi Guard Team, you must not only perform your duties well but also strengthen your physique to strive for outstanding performance in the next mission.
After saying that, Li Gangtie shouted with considerable force, "Tell me, can you do it?"
However, to his embarrassment, no one responded.
Li Gangtie blinked repeatedly, unable to understand. Did all these people want to be sent back?
Before he could even process what was happening, someone snapped out of it, stood up, and shouted, "Ahhh, I passed! I passed the test!"
