Chapter 524 Nothing Gained

According to the laws of Qinghua Kingdom, reclaiming wasteland is permitted. But you can't just pin responsibilities that don't belong to their security team on them.

Without the police saying anything, the group of people gathered at the security room door knew what they had done wrong. Their faces flushed red, and they lowered their heads.

Chen Shunwei felt like he had the worst luck in the world to run into this bunch of clueless idiots. He turned to look at the policeman, who nodded slightly and said, "Let's go to the scene and see what's going on."

Although they didn't want to deal with these troublemakers, they still needed to investigate since someone's belongings were missing.

Seeing this, Chen Shunwei followed. Although it was now confirmed that it had nothing to do with their security team, he still wanted to find out what had happened.

He led the police to the back of Qingning Mountain, explaining along the way that they patrolled the area several times a day.

"Aren't you afraid of impetigo?" the policeman asked in surprise.

Chen Shunwei gave a wry smile, "This is the job we do. How can we abandon the lives and property of homeowners just because we're afraid of impetigo?"

The police officer gave a thumbs-up and praised, "You're all great!"

He has a colleague who lives in this neighborhood, so he has heard about the security situation here.

Chen Shunwei shook his head, "I don't deserve such praise. We just caught the disease without warning, so we don't care whether it's mild or severe."

The policeman smiled and said, "It's already good enough. So many people have chosen to stay at home or stay at night because of the abnormal sunlight outside. Only you guys dare to wander around outside in broad daylight."

"How can we not go out for a walk? We're paid for this job. Look at you, you're out here in the scorching sun too."

Chen Shunwei looked a little embarrassed, then gestured with his chin to the group of people leading the way and said softly, "They're the ones who are truly courageous. They clearly don't need to patrol, yet they still wander around in broad daylight. If they hadn't said the grain had been stolen, I wouldn't have believed it. Who has the guts to do that in broad daylight?"

Chen Shunwei was so engrossed in talking that he didn't notice the police officer next to him had fallen silent.

After a long while, the other party said, "Actually, there have been quite a few cases of grain theft recently. Many people take advantage of the time difference when few people are working in the fields during the day to steal grain."

Chen Shunwei was dumbfounded. "Doesn't every household own land? Why would they take such a big risk to steal it?"

The policeman chuckled, "In the apocalypse, who would complain about having too much food?"

"But isn't it time to harvest the wheat in this field yet? And doesn't the new law from the Alliance say that stealing grain is a serious crime?" Chen Shunwei was so shocked that he couldn't close his mouth for a long time.

The police officer gave Chen Shunwei a meaningful look. "It's probably because of the high returns that some people are willing to risk their lives."

Chen Shunwei fell silent, realizing the other person had a point. But they weren't in dire straits yet, so why resort to such petty tricks? Clearly, they could survive by simply working hard at farming.

Little did he know that, apart from a few genuinely lazy scoundrels, the rest of these petty thieves had discovered the hidden danger beneath the surface of stability, which was why they committed these illegal acts.

In peaceful times, they would be law-abiding citizens. But they've clearly discovered... and if no special measures are taken, they fear they won't survive.

After a long and arduous journey, the group finally reached the back of Qingning Mountain. Chen Shunwei breathed a sigh of relief when he saw that the land he had been protecting was still lush and green. Then, following the leader, they wandered around for about half an hour before finally arriving at the land they had been cultivating.

The once-cultivated land is now nothing but withered leaves. Even Chen Shunwei and the police, let alone the pioneers, are heartbroken.

"I thought we were out of vegetables at home, so I came over to pick a couple of bunches of lettuce. Who would have thought that not only were all the vegetables in the garden picked clean, but even the sweet potato vines were dug up! You know, we only planted them a month and a half ago, and nothing has grown yet. Those damned people, they're trying to kill us!"

As the man spoke, he began to cry. If his cries of anger and resentment when he was causing trouble for Chen Shunwei were his tears of despair.

The others also wiped away tears. "That's right. When Brother Lin saw this, he quickly notified the rest of us who were clearing the land together. When we came over, everything was gone. We were so angry that we went to the security team to demand an explanation."

While expressing sympathy for their plight, the police still spoke fairly, saying, "This has nothing to do with the security team. You didn't report the land clearing, and it's not within their responsibility. Why are you expecting them to compensate you? Are you trying to find someone to take the blame since you can't find the real culprit?"

When the police exposed their intentions, they were a little embarrassed, but they still argued, "We were thinking that this place belongs to Qingning Mountain no matter what, and Qingning Mountain belongs to Qingyu Community. Even if we didn't give them any permission, they still have a responsibility to protect our land."

The police officer was so angry he almost laughed. He pointed at the shameless group and said, "Go back and learn about the relevant land policies before you say such things. They haven't even complained about you clearing land on their property, yet you're so self-righteous in criticizing them. You can't act like that."

Of course, whether your land clearing here is legal or not is for the relevant departments to determine. Let's not talk about that now; the important thing is to examine the evidence at the scene and find the thieves as soon as possible.”

Seeing the expectant look in everyone's eyes, the police officer changed the subject and said, "However, don't get your hopes up too high. After all, there are no surveillance cameras here, so it will be difficult for us to investigate. In the end, it's very likely that the matter will be dropped."

It wasn't that he didn't want to get involved, but rather that it was genuinely difficult. If a theft occurred in the city center, with current technology, the culprit would likely be found. But this place, though not the suburbs, was still remote and mountainous, making it quite challenging to locate the perpetrator.

So I didn't say anything definitively, for fear of being proven wrong later.

The expressions on everyone's faces changed from anticipation to disappointment, and then to despair.

They knew all too well how difficult it would be to find the murderer; otherwise, they wouldn't have gone to cause trouble for the security team under each other's encouragement.

The police ignored them and went straight to the piece of land that had been ravaged. They squatted down to examine the footprints left on the ground, which were somewhat messy and not very clear.

That's true. Although there was a heavy rain before, the ground had been exposed to the sun for several days. Most of the moisture in the ground had evaporated long ago; it was dry and barren, so there was hardly any deep mark left.

Moreover, these victims failed to protect the scene immediately, making it impossible for the authorities to investigate effectively.

Left with no other choice, the group had to leave.
