Chapter 861 Failure to Enter Summer

After An An and Nuan Nuan's birthday, a heavy rain fell in Hai City. Fortunately, it didn't last long; the rain stopped after just one day.

After the rain, many people from the base went out in teams, hoping to be among the first to collect wild mushrooms.

Of course, not everyone can tell whether something is edible. Therefore, Ye Wengui proposed a "rental" service for guards.

Simply put, everyone can apply for a guardian to lead them out to find wild vegetables and mushrooms, and the guardian team will receive 10% of the harvest, no matter how much they find.

Many people went to Ye Wengui to apply because the cost was not high.

However, some people are stingy and would rather stumble around aimlessly than pay this price.

Ye Wengui didn't mind; buying and selling should be voluntary, of course.

Shen Yanming also took a group of friends out to find ingredients on the weekend. When they reached the hillside they had visited before, they found it was covered with weeds. But upon closer inspection, they discovered that the waist-high weeds were wild vegetables.

Everyone cheered, forgetting about their companions, and rushed into the wild grass, scrambling to pick the freshest parts.

When Wen Mengguan found out, he left behind the guards stationed there and sent the rest of the guards out.

"Hurry up and collect them, store as much as you can while you still have them. Otherwise, we'll run out of vegetables again when winter comes."

While that may be an exaggeration, the guards can't just go out and not come in.

The jubilant atmosphere lasted until mid-June, when everyone realized that the temperature had remained at 25 degrees Celsius.

Qinghua Kingdom has failed to enter summer once again.

Fear began to creep into everyone's hearts. Did this mean that summer would never come again?

Although it's not as comfortable as spring and autumn, the sudden disappearance of a season is just too terrifying!

Ye Wengui stood in the field, frowning at the wheat that hadn't yet turned yellow. When Shen Yanming came over, his face twitched unnaturally, but he couldn't manage a smile.

"There's no hope. What can we do? Only two-thirds of the wheat seedlings have grown, and they haven't even produced ears yet. The guard's food supply will only last three years. Now that there's no income, things will be difficult later." Last year was a total crop failure. Are we going to have to go through that again?

"Let's wait and see. It's still more than two months before the temperature drops. Maybe it will be ripe in July or August."

Shen Yanming's words of comfort were somewhat weak and ineffective, but Ye Wengui smiled and said, "Well, let's wait and see. I hope we can have a good harvest this year, even if it's a reduced production."

Shen Yanming patted him on the shoulder, "Let's take advantage of the high temperature now and quickly plant some vegetables. Sweet potatoes and potatoes too, if we hurry, they might even ripen for a season."

Ye Wengui nodded: "The people have already been arranged to plant them."

Shen Yanming thought for a moment and suggested, "We have a lot of people, so the more food the better. There's so much wasteland outside the base; if we can make full use of it, it might have unexpected benefits."

Ye Wengui laughed upon hearing this: "Wen Mengguan had already thought of these things. Our guard team has secretly reclaimed a lot of land outside the base, but we haven't announced it to the public. As for the wasteland in the city, we also encourage the survivors to cultivate it. However, they don't seem very enthusiastic."

Shen Yanming could understand: "The climate is abnormal right now, and they're probably worried that after all that hard work, they'll end up with nothing. Besides, things are still a bit chaotic right now, and planting outside doesn't guarantee a harvest. So it's better not to plant anything at all in the first place."

Ye Wengui thought for a moment and nodded: "I'll go and investigate first. If the situation is true, I'll report it and see if we can come up with a reasonable solution."

Shen Yanming smiled and said, "That would be best, as it would give us another source of food. By the way, have you organized anyone to go hunting in the mountains?"

Ye Wengui sighed: "Humans have ruined the environment like this, how can they dare to hunt indiscriminately? I can only hope that the end of industrialization will allow the planet to slowly repair itself."

Shen Yanming felt a little regretful, thinking that so many animals in the space couldn't be released.

He was also overthinking things and didn't dare to release them casually, fearing that changes in the animal population would once again disrupt the already precarious food chain.

Ye Wengui obviously had no idea what he was thinking, and said with a sense of relief, "Thank you for coming to chat with me. Every time I talk to you about my feelings, my worries are greatly reduced."

Shen Yanming nodded, thinking to himself that he had no choice but to act as a confidante in order to gather information.

After leaving the agricultural area, Shen Yanming went up the mountain again. He secretly scattered a lot of watermelon, pumpkin, and yam seeds on the mountain.

I don't expect them to grow this year; I've already planted them, so I'll leave the rest to fate. I just hope they survive.

When he got home and told his wife, neither of them thought much of it. They were powerless to stop the world from changing, and the young couple could only ensure that they had enough to eat and drink.

At the end of June, Li Zhaozhao brought Xu Yajing to visit.

The couple noticed a significant difference in their mental state this time, initially suspecting that Xu Yajing was pregnant. However, Li Zhaozhao then said, "My parents are back."

Shen Yanming and Bi Qiaoan stared wide-eyed, asking in surprise, "When did you get back? What happened?"

Li Zhaozhao wiped his face and calmed himself down before saying, "I don't know what the old couple was thinking. They said they didn't know if they would survive and didn't want to be a burden on me, so they never turned on the smart bracelet."

They thought that if they died on the way, I wouldn't be sad if I didn't know. They only came looking for me after all this trouble to get back.

The couple looked bewildered and after a long while said, "Your uncle and aunt have such unique ideas. They've really gone to great lengths for you."

Li Zhaozhao nodded: "Who says otherwise?"

"Where are they now, in your dorm?"

"No, I have a small place that can't fit four people. They applied for housing in District D."

Li Zhaozhao wanted to ask if his parents could stay with him temporarily. But seeing An'an's warm figure and the potted plants and firewood everywhere in the house, he fell silent.

Although there are two rooms here, each room has its purpose. If it were him, he probably wouldn't want to either.

The couple didn't know what he was thinking; they just assumed he was too excited and came to share the good news.

Shen Yanming added with a smile, "Once your aunt and uncle have settled down, come over for a meal together. Consider it a welcome back dinner for them."

Li Zhaozhao suddenly felt ashamed of his despicable thoughts. He blushed and refused, "No, no need. Everyone is having a hard time these days. Besides, I have..." a lot of supplies.

Li Zhaozhao didn't say the second half of his sentence because Xu Yajing was still beside him. He hadn't revealed all his assets; he still kept the little stash of money hidden in the cave.

Shen Yanming nodded and didn't insist, only saying that he would visit his uncle and aunt another day.

Li Zhaozhao's expression was somewhat subtle. He chatted with the couple for a while before leaving.
