"That's enough. How could they go without food? But everyone's busy, rushing to save lives, so they don't have time to eat."
"The main problem is that when they arrived, there was either no porridge available, or they were too embarrassed to compete with everyone else, so they had to go hungry for the time being."
"Oh, how pitiful."
"It's just the two of us who were assigned to be on duty here. It's a bit busy, but much easier than for others. To be honest, I'd really like to go help out in Zone D."
"Me too, I feel like I can't contribute anything here."
Bi Qiaoan: "...How about one of you go?" If both of you go, she can't handle it alone.
Wu Shizhu and Chang Jiarong were both somewhat tempted, but after thinking about it, they gave up.
"Let's stick to our posts; we're making a contribution no matter where we are."
"Contributions may be small or large, but no job is noble or lowly."
Bi Qiaoan listened to the two of them earnestly comforting her and fell silent.
What she didn't know was that Wu Shizhu and Chang Jiarong chose to stay because they were worried about her, and of course, they were also embarrassed to push the work onto the young girl.
"By the way, do you have a stove and a pot here? I brought a few medicine packets, so I can make some herbal soup for the guards. The kind that boosts their immunity, to make sure they don't catch a cold or fever while they're coming and going."
"Yes, yes, yes, I'll go borrow it right away!" Wu Shizhu said eagerly. He then ran off.
Chang Jiarong also asked her, "How many packs do you have? If you have a lot, send some to the lecture hall."
Bi Qiaoan sighed helplessly, "Just two packets." She wanted to bring more, but there were only so many medicinal herbs at home, and her own bag wasn't very big. Bringing too many would only make her seem suspicious.
"That's a pity," Chang Jiarong said.
Bi Qiaoan didn't know if these prescriptions could be made public, so she didn't speak up.
Seeing her silence, Chang Jiarong smiled and comforted her, "It's okay, there's a lot of foot traffic here, we can just let them all come and drink."
Bi Qiaoan nodded: "That's fine, this herbal medicine is quite effective."
No sooner had he finished speaking than a commotion broke out outside.
"They're here again, they've brought more people back." Chang Jiarong said and ran out.
They helped take the unconscious person to the emergency room, and then brought the cold, hungry, and exhausted guard to their office: "Here, have some ginger soup. The rice porridge isn't ready yet, so we'll have to make do with this for now."
Bi Qiaoan quickly ladled ginger soup for everyone. The guards were so moved by the spicy and hot soup that they cried.
It was too cold outside, so they dared not wear too many layers to move around. Carrying the heavy, deceased victims to the hospital, they were drenched in sweat from exhaustion.
But before the sweat could dry, I had to go out again. Going in and out, feeling the change from hot to cold, made my head feel dizzy.
Seeing their red eyes, Bi Qiaoan felt a pang of sympathy. She stirred the soup and added some more for them.
After Chang Jiarong left, Bi Qiaoan took the opportunity to add some spiritual spring water to the soup. Drinking it would relieve their fatigue and, incidentally, drive away the cold from their bodies.
Sure enough, the guards felt warmer after drinking the ginger soup. Their minds cleared considerably, and the sweat on their bodies quickly subsided. However, their clothes were still damp and uncomfortable against their skin.
The group put the bowls aside and thanked Bi Qiaoan sheepishly.
Bi Qiaoan smiled and said, "No need to thank me, it's just some ginger soup. If you run into your teammates on the way, you can call them over for some soup. Few people drink our ginger soup, and it's quick to make, so it's perfect for warming everyone up."
Several guards nodded: "Okay, I'll tell them."
After that, many waves of guards arrived one after another, each time leaving the victims behind. Some were able to stop for a drink of hot soup and a rest, while others couldn't and rushed back in a hurry.
Bi Qiaoan also finished brewing the medicinal soup. Many people felt that it was very effective after drinking it. After spreading the word, quite a few people came specifically to drink it.
Wu Shizhu and Chang Jiarong's porridge has been cooked several times already. Every time it's ready, a line forms outside. It's like they've installed surveillance cameras.
Although there were conditions and restrictions on receiving relief porridge, the number of people suffering was so large that they needed to eat and drink as soon as they woke up, and the two young men almost couldn't supply them all.
Shen Yanming arrived at 10:30 p.m.
A spirited young man, after only a few hours of exposure to the wind and snow, looked incredibly haggard.
His eyes were red and swollen, and his knuckles were so stiff he could barely move them. His clothes were covered in large stains, and most of his pants were wet.
His voice was particularly hoarse: "Honey, are you sleepy?"
Bi Qiaoan shook her head: "I'm not sleepy, I'm still full of energy. What about you, how come you're so rough?"
Shen Yanming was also somewhat helpless.
He arrived later; the guards who had been working there before him were already exhausted. He couldn't very well choose the easy tasks.
The only option was to replace the frontline guards and have them scavenge people from collapsed buildings or carry unconscious people to the hospital.
They're all physically demanding jobs, not easy at all.
However, there was no plan to go into details, so I changed the subject and asked, "Is there anything to eat?"
Bi Qiaoan nodded: "Yes!"
After saying that, she took out two cooled roasted sweet potatoes from her bag, and then ladled a bowl of hot ginger soup for her husband, Lao Shen.
"The porridge is gone; it was just taken away."
Shen Yanming nodded and began to eat.
Ugh, I'm so hungry! The skewers I had for lunch weren't filling at all. I've only been out for two hours, and I'm already completely full.
Wu Shizhu and Chang Jiarong smiled and left, giving the young couple some space, as they watched them talking to each other.
Seeing that no one was around, Bi Qiaoan stepped forward to block them and whispered, "Quick, grab something to eat."
Shen Yanming was amused by his wife's adorable expression. But he didn't hesitate. After wiping his hands clean, he used his backpack as cover to take out a large steamed bun from his spatial storage and devoured it in a few bites.
Then, still wanting more, he said, "When we get home, we must have a good, hearty meal."
Bi Qiaoan asked, "Should we go back?"
"Yeah, there are still a dozen or so that haven't been delivered yet. By the time we finish, it'll probably be one or two o'clock."
Shen Yanming looked at his wife with some hesitation, "I don't know anyone here, otherwise I could have sent you back first."
Bi Qiaoan shook her head: "No, I'll wait for you to pick me up. Everyone's busy today, so let's not bother others."
"Okay, then if you're sleepy, lean against the wall and rest for a while."
Shen Yanming left after he finished speaking. Wu Shizhu and Chang Jiarong were wondering why this guy didn't stay a little longer.
Bi Qiaoan noticed their confusion and said with a smile, "There are still more than a dozen people in Section D. He wants to finish his work and go back to rest as soon as possible."
The two nodded, then realized, "Where are your two babies?" Surely the adults didn't leave the younger ones at home while the adults were out, did they?
Bi Qiaoan didn't expect people to ask that, and forced a stiff smile: "Sleeping at home."
Wu Shizhu found it somewhat unbelievable. He widened his eyes and asked, "Are you sure?"
Bi Qiaoan forced a smile: "It's alright, my two kids are quite well-behaved. They were already asleep when we came out, but we asked our neighbor to help look after them."
