After nervously clearing out the beehive, Shen Yanming quickly climbed to the top of the cliff.
It was already broad daylight. The couple quickly moved away from the troublesome place and then removed their equipment in a wide, flat area.
Shen Yanming still wore rubber gloves as he processed the honeycomb. The golden honey that remained shone brightly in the sunlight.
The couple stuffed the plastic bottle filled with honey into their backpack and then stored it away. After that, they began their search for the next beehive.
Inside the space, An'an and Nuannuan woke up to find that their parents were gone.
The two kids weren't in a hurry. They lifted the covers, got out of bed, put on their little slippers, and scurried into the bathroom.
Turn on the tap for hot water to rinse the mop, wash your small, square towel, wring it out, and rub it on your face a few times.
Then I brushed my teeth and ran to the living room. Seeing the food on the coffee table, I grinned and started eating.
After they finished eating, the two kids took their plates and bowls to the kitchen.
Feeling bored, An'an took her younger sister to play with the goose.
The couple had already told them their plans last night. The two children wanted to come along, but Shen Yanming and Bi Qiaoan were going on business and it wasn't convenient for them to take them.
Although An'an and Nuannuan were disappointed, they didn't throw a tantrum. They obediently went to bed and promised to take good care of themselves the next day.
Bi Qiaoan sensed that the two had woken up, so she used her consciousness to observe the space. She discovered that the two were very organized and even shared their thoughts with Shen Yanming.
Old Shen didn't say it, but his mouth was practically stretched to his ears; he was overjoyed.
The couple made the most of their time and soon arrived at their next destination. They then used the same trick again and harvested a large batch of honey.
The couple's backpacks were large enough to hold a dozen or so plastic bottles, which, when full, would weigh about forty pounds of honey. That was more than enough.
They spent the entire day either traveling or raiding beehives. At noon, they ate some simple dry rations, rested briefly, and then continued working. It wasn't easy for them.
Fortunately, the two were lucky. All the beehives escaped unscathed, with only two-thirds of their honey extracted.
As the sun slowly set in the west, Shen Yanming and Bi Qiaoan headed back home. The path down the mountain was difficult, but because it was rarely visited, it gave the two of them the opportunity to do something "bad."
The couple kept scattering seeds along the way. Although it was a bit late to plant them, if even one thing could grow, it would greatly reduce the burden on everyone.
They walked quite slowly, but they still couldn't get down the mountain before it got completely dark.
Shen Yanming found a secluded corner to enter the space, then passed through the transparent light curtain and walked to the planting area. He then had his wife bring him out. This way, they could avoid the base's guards next time they came out.
The two looked up at the stars and the moon in the sky and found that the crescent moon was curved and not very bright.
Bi Qiaoan grabbed Shen Yanming's arm and whispered in his ear, "Let some of those out?"
Shen Yanming looked around and, finding it very quiet, nodded.
Bi Qiaoan crouched down and put her hand into the bushes. Soon, chirping, squeaking, chattering, and creaking sounds came from behind the bushes.
She released several hundred rabbits, chickens, ducks, and quails outside. As for cattle, horses, and sheep, she didn't release them. Too many would easily cause trouble.
The little animals were initially bewildered by the change in their surroundings, trembling in place. But after two minutes, seeing no enemies approaching, they grew bolder and hopped away.
A few carefree animals, completely oblivious to their surroundings, took a look at the dense grass and started nibbling.
They'd only taken a couple of bites when they realized it couldn't compare to the hay in the space. It was all old and awful. They were so disgusted with it that they ran off to find some fresh, tender grass.
As for whether they can be found, that's hard to say. After all, it's already past June, and there aren't many tender ones left. Any that were found have probably been killed by the survivors.
Shen Yanming and Bi Qiaoan ignored the small animals. They quickened their pace and walked back. When they were almost at the base, Shen Yanming put Bi Qiaoan into his spatial storage, then swaggered into the base carrying a plastic bucket.
"You're finally back. If you hadn't come back, Secretary Jiang would have sent people to look for you," said Liang Zheng, the guard on duty at the gate.
Shen Yanming raised an eyebrow in surprise and said, "I'm fine, I just went to a lot of places, some quite far. Did Secretary Jiang need something from me?"
"Sigh, it's because we heard you went out to collect honey, and we were worried about something going wrong. You're really reckless. What good addresses could those people possibly give you? If they had good ones, they would have already taken them. Most of the ones they can name are ones they can't reach."
Shen Yanming nodded: "Dude, you're right!"
"So you weren't stung, were you?"
"Thank goodness, the protective measures were thorough, and nothing went wrong. I guess I'm lucky," Shen Yanming said with a smile.
Liang Zheng gave him a thumbs up, expressing his immense admiration.
"Brother, wait a moment, I need to report to Secretary Jiang, otherwise he won't be at ease."
Shen Yanming glanced at the time and realized it was already 3:30 in the morning. He frowned and said, "Secretary Jiang is still at get off work in the middle of the night?"
“He said he’d stay in the office tonight, and if you don’t come back before dawn, he’ll immediately arrange for a search and rescue operation. You’re in such a hurry, even if you’re just collecting honey. You’ve been gone for a whole day and night. Aren’t you worried about your wife?”
Shen Yanming thought to himself, "I don't need to worry about my wife; she's with me."
But she didn't say it aloud. She smiled and thanked Liang Zheng, then watched him make a phone call.
Over there, Jiang Shulian was drowsy but dared not let himself fall into a deep sleep. He would wake up every now and then to check the time and ask about Shen Yanming's whereabouts.
For some reason, Wen Mengguan suddenly took a liking to this person. It wasn't a big deal, but Shen Yanming was just too much of a troublemaker.
They were digging for honey, but one hive wasn't enough. They dug out six at once. Weren't they afraid of getting sick from all the honey?
But he dared not speak or ask why, and could only timidly carry out the orders.
Sure enough, as soon as the phone rang, he answered it reflexively. He immediately perked up when Liang Zheng mentioned Shen Yanming.
She breathed a sigh of relief upon learning that he had returned. After letting Shen Yanming answer the phone to confirm in person, she finally fell asleep without any burden.
Liang Zheng hung up the phone and gestured for Shen Yanming to go back quickly.
"You must be tired after being out for so long. Go back and rest."
Shen Yanming smiled and handed over the honey-bottomed bottle from the plastic bucket: "If you don't mind, why don't you keep it and try it?"
Liang Zheng knew what Shen Yanming had gone out to do, so it wasn't hard to guess what was in the bucket. He licked his lips, somewhat eager to try: "Is it okay?"
Shen Yanming nodded: "It's not much, I'll leave it all for you. Consider it a small token of appreciation for your hard work guarding this place every day."
