I did consider turning back, but turning back would be suicide.
The group of people had almost ruined all the food they had along the way, so if they wanted to survive, they had no choice but to keep going.
Shen Yanming and Nuannuan sat there for a while, and then they got sleepy.
Bi Qiaoan noticed that her husband's voice was getting weaker and weaker, so she stopped talking and went to take a nap with An'an in her arms.
Most of the people outside are still hungry, and they refuse to come back. They're practically drowning just to get something to eat.
Fortunately, the river here may be connected to an underground river somewhere, so even if you catch all the fish, they will soon be replenished.
Shen Yanming felt that he had done an excellent job of keeping the secret.
Around 3 PM, the wind picked up. The sky was overcast, as if it were about to collapse.
Tang Shunlin was alarmed and quickly sent people back to the cave. But just then, someone saw a small head peeking out from behind a big tree.
"Holy crap, what's that? A sika deer?"
In his excitement, he shouted out, scaring away the little elf who was focused on eating grass.
"Damn it, we can't let it get away!"
"Meat! It's all meat!"
A group of people quickly gave chase, and Tang Shunlin, Ji Shaoming, and Shang Haoqiang, seeing this, also rushed over to help. They were more experienced in fighting wild animals.
The wild deer ran very fast, and before long, the group lost track of them.
The guards were experienced in this area, and based on the tracks on the ground, they began to deduce the route.
Sure enough, it wasn't long before we saw a herd of deer leisurely enjoying themselves.
"There are five! That's a lot!" People who haven't even seen many rabbits in the past two days are now craving meat.
"Quietly, so as not to scare them away again."
"We have a lot of people, but we might not be able to catch them. Should we think of a way?"
"What other options are there, like digging a trap?"
"That's not impossible. Anyway, there are many of us. We can surround them from all sides, then drive the deer into the pit. They'll panic and run into the pit without thinking, and they'll fall in."
"Wow, you're really smart. You came up with such an effortless solution."
"Hehe, that's right! But these are all just my wild guesses, I don't know if they'll work."
"If you want to know if it works, why don't you just ask Captain Tang and the others?"
Tang Shunlin was not far from them and naturally heard what they said. He nodded: "We can give it a try."
Then he sent Meng Wu and Ji Shaoming to dig traps, while he and Shang Haoqiang stayed behind to keep an eye on the deer herd.
Because of the lack of tools, digging the hole was slow, but fortunately the deer herd only wandered around nearby and did not leave their sight.
An hour later, the trap was finally complete. Ji Shaoming was extremely satisfied. He walked over to Tang Shunlin and whispered, "Done!"
Tang Shunlin smiled and proceeded with the plan.
A group of people silently dispersed, forming a large circle, and then contracted from the outside in, getting closer and closer.
At first, the deer herd didn't react, but it wasn't long before they realized there was a problem.
Then, panicked, they tried to escape.
With too many people blocking the way, the deer could only run through gaps deliberately left by the crowd, and in their panic, they fell into the trap.
However, two of the five ran away, leaving only three.
"That's great, we can eat for at least three days!" Tang Shunlin said with a smile.
The others were also satisfied with the result, and some were even fantasizing, "Maybe we can catch those two who slipped through the net tomorrow."
Meng Wu raised a question: "You guys said we didn't encounter any large wild animals for so many days before, how come there are suddenly so many today?"
Shang Haoqiang didn't care: "Why bother with all that? We're lucky to have anything to eat. Maybe it's because we've just entered the heartland."
Meng Wu shook his head, disagreeing: "It's better to be cautious, otherwise what if we run into tigers and wolves? You know, we don't have any weapons. Alright, you guys pack up here, I'll go ahead and check for any traces."
"Alright, be careful yourself," Tang Shunlin instructed.
If Old Shen knew about all that his brother had gone through, he would definitely cry. However, fate was on his side.
Before Meng Wu could take two steps forward, rain began to fall from the sky.
He frowned and decided to investigate where the deer herd had come from before the rain got too heavy.
The thought had barely formed when it started raining heavily, as if the sky had burst open. The rain was so heavy that it was almost impossible to see the road.
Well, there's no trace left this time. I'd better hurry back to avoid the rain.
Thinking it over, Meng Wu turned around and helped Tang Shunlin get the wild deer out of the pit. Then, he and his companions tied the deer's hooves with wild grass and carried it back together.
They didn't have a rope and didn't dare let the wild deer walk on its own, for fear of it running away and getting lost.
Shen Yanming was awakened by the sound of rain outside the cave. When he opened his eyes, he found that he, Nuannuan, Wanwan, and Yajing were the only people in the cave.
"What about them?" Shen Yanming asked.
"I heard they spotted some wild animals and went hunting," Li Wanwan said with a smile.
Shen Yanming raised an eyebrow: "Wild animals? What wild animals?"
"I don't know, it looked like a deer. It was too far away for me to see clearly."
Shen Yanming nodded, saying nothing more. Looking at the pattering raindrops, he thought to himself that God had been incredibly kind to him. Now there was no trace left; even if someone suspected something, there was nothing they could do.
Not long after, Tang Shunlin and his men returned with the wild deer.
Shen Yanming looked at the number—three heads—and nodded, thinking that he had done a good job.
He stood up: "Was this just hunted? That's amazing!" Then he feigned surprise: "There are actually deer in our mountains!"
Tang Shunlin nodded with a smile: "Yes, I don't know where they came from, but we're lucky."
He had the deer placed in the innermost part of the house, and looking at the pile of firewood in the corner, he said, "Luckily, I was worried about rain this morning and gathered some firewood in advance, otherwise, I'm afraid we wouldn't be able to roast any meat."
Shen Yanming nodded: "I just don't know if this is enough."
"There's nothing we can do about it if it's not enough; that's all we prepared."
Shen Yanming smiled and said nothing more.
"Why don't we take advantage of daylight and deal with the deer first?"
"Sure, we can have a barbecue tonight."
Tang Shunlin, Ji Shaoming, and Shang Haoqiang carried a deer out of the cave. Shen Yanming looked at Nuannuan and gave up on helping.
Seeing that there were enough people over there, Meng Wu went outside the cave and gathered a lot of grass: "I'll save it for our other two deer to eat."
Shen Yanming smiled, picked up Nuannuan, and looked at the two deer shivering in the corner. After all, they were released from his own space, so he had some affection for them.
(Bi Qiaoan: "...Shen Yanming, do you have any shame?")
Nuannuan touched the antlers of the two deer with her little hands and asked her father, "Are we going to eat them later?"
Shen Yanming wanted to say no, but the truth was cruel: "Yes, the uncles have nothing to eat, so they can only become food."
Nuannuan frowned slightly: "If there's food, then they're not food?"
Shen Yanming explained in a serious tone: "If people had no worries about food and drink, most people wouldn't choose to go into the mountains to hunt."
