Bi Qiaoan nodded without saying anything. Seeing her indifference, the older woman stopped nagging.
However, when she saw her husband return with a sullen face, she had a bad feeling.
"What, aren't they coming back?"
The old man huffed, "Not only that, those young men almost attacked me because they thought I was in their way."
The woman wiped away her tears and helped the old man sit down: "Since that's the case, let's not worry about them. We'll just do our best."
The old man felt a pang of sorrow and sighed, "The world is going to the dogs, and people's hearts are no longer what they used to be!"
"There's no country anymore, so what's the point of talking about the past or the present? You should stop worrying so much. Just live peacefully for a couple of days and wait until we find our son."
The old man nodded. "Understood!"
After the elderly couple calmed down, Bi Qiaoan got up and said, "I'll go check out the surrounding area and see if there's anywhere we can evacuate."
The elderly couple didn't stop her, they just said, "Be careful." They had originally wanted to help the young girl look after her child, but seeing how nervous she was, they didn't offer to.
Bi Qiaoan had no idea what they were thinking, but she sensed that they seemed hesitant to speak. However, she wasn't overly curious, so she didn't ask.
After walking for a while with An'an in hand, they saw that the road was getting difficult, so they picked up their baby. The two walked further and further away, and the more desolate the place became.
When they arrived at a large area of ruins, Bi Qiaoan saw that the surroundings were empty and there was no cover, so she asked An'an, "Do you want to eat something?"
An'an's eyes lit up, and she asked her mother, "Is it okay?"
Bi Qiaoan nodded: "Okay, there's no one here. We just need to be careful and not get discovered."
An'an thought for a moment and said, "I want to eat fruit."
Bi Qiaoan reached into her backpack and took out a few spiritual lychees: "Eat up, Mom will keep watch for you. We'll leave after you've finished eating."
An An nodded, peeled off the red shell, ate the crystal-clear white flesh inside, and then gave the pit to Bi Qiao An.
The little one didn't have a big appetite and was full after eating only three or four pieces. She thanked Bi Qiaoan with a smile in her eyes, then placed her little hand in her mother's big hand, and the two continued walking forward.
After walking for a long time, the mother and son finally reached the end. Here, just like where they had come ashore, was a body of water, and there were signs of the receding tide. However, what was exposed was mostly silt.
Bi Qiaoan thought for a moment, then picked up a chair leg from the side and stuck it in. The mud easily submerged the chair leg, with some mud still remaining.
Bi Qiaoan sighed. It seemed they were truly trapped on this "isolated island" and had no choice but to leave.
She casually tossed the fruit pits that An'an had left over into the mud. After thinking for a moment, she added a number of spiritual seeds and ordinary seeds to the mud.
What Bi Qiaoan didn't know was that her actions today would later earn this land the reputation of an "oasis of life," bringing hope to countless people struggling in the apocalypse.
At this moment, she and An'an were walking around the edge of the "isolated island," and by evening they had only managed to complete half of the circle.
The mother and son were so tired that their backs and legs ached, and all they wanted to do was collapse on the ground. The good thing was that they didn't run into anyone outside and enjoyed a delicious lunch and dinner.
Now the mother and daughter were quite pregnant, and they slowly made their way to the shore.
Bi Qiaoan carried An'an to find the elderly couple, but as soon as they got close, they heard an indescribable sound.
Moreover, the voices weren't just a pair; they were a whole bunch.
Bi Qiaoan's face turned ashen, and she quickly covered An'an's ears.
Walking back to where we rested yesterday, we found that besides the elderly couple, there were only four or five girls left.
"Where did they all go?" Bi Qiaoan asked meaningfully.
The elderly couple nodded, and the girls seemed a little embarrassed.
Bi Qiaoan glanced at them and said with a smile, "Why don't you go over there?"
The girls blushed and said, "We're not some lowly thing, why should we offer ourselves up to be bullied? Besides, it's just a fish, the old man said we can't eat it."
"But they went anyway!"
“That’s because they want something for nothing. We’re not like them,” one of the girls said angrily, thinking that Bi Qiaoan was belittling them.
Bi Qiaoan nodded, "Yes, not bad, I hope you can keep it up."
"You don't need to tell us, we can do it too!"
Bi Qiaoan wasn't angry; she hugged An'an and closed her eyes.
In the middle of the night, the sound of a pig being slaughtered rang out. Bi Qiaoan was startled and instinctively put the doll in her arms into her spatial storage and hugged the sleeping An'an into her arms.
"What's going on? What's going on?" Many people were startled awake and ran towards the source of the sound.
Seeing this, Bi Qiaoan picked up An'an and followed behind the crowd to watch the excitement, but deliberately kept her distance from them.
Before long, gasps could be heard. Through the crowd, Bi Qiaoan saw a woman who was barely clothed, her body covered with a dense rash that looked quite eerie in the moonlight.
The man beside her was covered by clothes, so her condition was obscured. His face, however, was a mess, completely covered in red rashes. And since he hadn't woken up despite all the commotion, he was likely in shock.
"My God, what's wrong with this person?" someone asked curiously, preparing to go over and check on him.
"No, look at him, what if it's some kind of infectious disease?"
The man withdrew his hand in fright, then asked, trembling slightly, "We were fishing with them this afternoon, could we have caught it too?"
"No, really?"
"I remember an old man saying that you shouldn't eat fish. Could it be that this happened because I ate fish?"
"No, I have to go and ask that old man!"
The man was terrified inside, but his face was incredibly fierce. His limbs were weak, and at that moment, all he wanted was to take someone else down with him.
When they got to the rest area, they found that the old men and women were gone. Even the pretty girls were nowhere to be seen.
It turns out that Bi Qiaoan decisively chose to escape after discovering that someone had fallen ill.
She woke up the few who hadn't eaten the fish and ran towards the deserted spot she and An'an had walked through that afternoon.
The elderly people are slow on their feet, but because they are afraid of being caught up, they take small steps with great energy.
The girls supported each other, panting heavily, still shaken by the experience.
Bi Qiaoan and An'an were the calmest; they had trump cards up their sleeves, and if all else failed, they could simply hide in their spatial dimension. However, seeing several people around them who refused to succumb to fate, they decided to lend a hand if they could.
The road was difficult to travel at night, and since those people hadn't scouted the area, they couldn't find any trace of the group.
They chased after them for more than ten minutes, then gave up, cursing as they returned to their original spot. They ordered the men and women who had fallen ill to be separated, and quietly awaited their fate.
Bi Qiaoan found a sheltered spot for everyone to rest, and then used her mind to tell Shen Yanming what had happened.
Shen Yanming was also shocked after hearing this, wondering how Huang Mao was doing.
What he didn't know was that Huang Mao died the very night they left.
