At three o'clock, the car entered the highway and left Mocheng. To go to my grandfather's house, we could take the highway or the country road. As it was the end of the year, many people were leaving the city and returning to their hometowns. The journey took more than 40 minutes, and it took nearly an hour to reach Changmen Village.
Yan Mo sat in the passenger seat and looked out the window. The oranges that were pomelo green when he came last time had turned golden yellow, covering the peaks and becoming a beautiful scenery in Changmen Village.
"Grandpa, haven't you picked the oranges here yet?" Yan Mo asked casually.
Old Mu opened the car window, put on his reading glasses, and pointed to two low hills farther away from the road. He said, "I'm picking them now. The orange harvesters are late this year."
She looked in the direction her grandfather pointed, and it was indeed
"Do grandpa and grandma also plant it?" Si Ze, who was driving, interrupted.
Lao Mu nodded: "Well, not many." Originally, his family had more than a dozen orange orchards, most of which were rented out to others, leaving only two plots for himself.
"So, Grandpa, the reason you guys are rushing back is because you want to pick oranges?"
She finally understood why grandpa and grandma were in such a hurry to come back.
But didn't her mother say that her grandfather's orange orchard was rented out to someone else? So they were still secretly growing oranges?
The main agricultural industry of Changmen Village is a kind of thin-skinned and sweet-fleshed orange. In the past, when oranges were still a best-seller, Changmen Village was richer than other villages. However, in recent years, with the increasing number of orange varieties and the influx of a large number of contractors, the privately grown oranges are no longer as easy to sell as in previous years.
Hearing this, Lao Mu withdrew his gaze from the car window, looked at Yan Mo in the passenger seat, and said with a smile:
"Momo, grandpa wants to discuss something with you."
"You want me not to tell my mother, right?" Yan Mo was helpless and said what Lao Mu was thinking in one sentence.
She didn't know yet that her mother had always disapproved of the two elders growing these things. If her mother knew about this, she would probably clamor to bring the two elders back to Mo City. After all, growing oranges was a very hard job.
"Right." Old Mu leaned forward, closer to the passenger seat, a flattering smile on his face. "Momo, don't tell your mother about this for now. Grandpa is old and not suited to city life. He prefers the life he has now, growing vegetables, practicing Tai Chi, tending to the orange orchard, and proper exercise are more beneficial to health. Look, grandma and I have rarely been to the hospital in recent years!"
Looking at his grandfather like this, Yan Mo smiled and shook his head, and could only agree:
"All right!"
They are all over 50 years old. As their junior, she just wants them to be happy. Her mother doesn't want them to plant because she is afraid that they will be too tired and worried about their health. Since they like it and it is good for their health, she won't say much.
As they spoke, the car turned a corner and slowly drove towards Changmen Village. Outside the village entrance, baskets of tempting, red fruits were displayed. The area was bustling with people, and the farmers' faces were filled with the joy of a good harvest. Some were using rulers to size the fruits, while others were weighing them. After weighing, the fruits would be loaded into large trucks by buyers.
As the car entered Changmen Village, people recognized them and came forward enthusiastically, surrounding the car and greeting them:
"Girl Mo, you've brought your husband back." As they spoke, everyone's gossipy eyes turned to Si Ze who was driving, and they all praised him:
"Mo girl, your husband is really as your grandfather said, a handsome man, really good-looking."
"Yeah! Quite handsome."
"He's almost as good as the male lead in 'Bright Sword.'"
Si Ze and Yan Mo: “…”
"What are you thinking? Miss Mo is much more handsome than that protagonist. She's just like a general in ancient times. Don't you agree, Miss Mo?"
"It's okay, it's okay." Yan Mo smiled awkwardly and glanced at her grandfather in the back seat without leaving a trace.
She said that! The villagers are all elderly people, and they usually don't pay much attention to entertainment news. How come everyone in the village knows that she is married? It must be her grandfather's publicity.
"Ahem," Old Man clenched his fist and pretended to cough. Without even looking at his granddaughter, he turned to the fat aunt who had just spoken and said, "Well, how much is a pound of tangerines this year? How long do they take to harvest?"
"This year is different from last year. I heard they'll be gone in the next two days after the harvest." The fat lady leaned against the car window and whispered, "Grandpa Mu, your family should hurry up and pick the grapes too! Buy as much as you can while the buyers are still around, otherwise they'll rot in the fields again."
"Okay, thank you." Lao Mu nodded, stretched his hand out of the car window, waved to everyone, and signaled everyone to make way. Seeing this, Si Ze slowly increased the speed of the car, passed the village entrance, and drove into his grandfather's yard.
Lao Mu quickly opened the car door, took out the key, opened the front door of his house, and walked into the house in a hurry. In a short while, he came out wearing a flowery hat, a flowery apron around his chest, and carrying two bamboo baskets on a shoulder pole.
Yan Mo was puzzled:
"Grandpa, are you going to pick them now?"
"Yes, Momo, you sit with your grandson-in-law, I will be back soon." Lao Mu said as he walked out, and his figure gradually disappeared from the sight of Yan Mo and the others.
Si Ze got out of the car, walked to Yan Mo's side, and suggested:
"Momo, let's go and help!"
They young people were sitting at home while grandpa, who was so old, was busy outside. Si Ze felt bad and couldn't stand it. Anyway, he was free, so he might as well help.
Hearing Si Ze's words, the grandma who was about to go into the house to change clothes stopped and turned around, and immediately refused: "No need, grandson-in-law, we can't pick all the oranges at once, so let your grandpa pick them slowly. You can just come in and sit for a while. If you can't sit still, you can go out for a walk." After that, the grandma went into the kitchen and started preparing dinner.
