Chapter 12 Inquiry

"Good" might be due to excessive blood loss. She always felt thirsty. She remembered reading a report before that people would feel thirsty after losing too much blood.

Li Guizhi gently helped her daughter up, helping her sit up with a lean. Suddenly, Qian Xiao felt dizzy, which was also a sign of excessive blood loss.

She closed her eyes and rested for a long time, her weakness causing her to break out in a sweat.

The two police officers could tell that the little girl was seriously injured; even a piece of yellow paper covering her face would have made her look like she was about to die. It was only by sheer luck that she survived.

"Hello young lady, we are from the commune police station. My surname is Fang, and this is Zhou. We are here today to understand the specific process." The police chief who spoke was dark-skinned and not very tall, but he looked quite sturdy.

The other person wasn't much paler either, with a typical square face and a serious expression as if someone owed him money. If this were a normal seven-year-old girl, she wouldn't even need him to say a word; he would have scared her to tears.

"Hello, here's what happened..." Qian Xiao started by talking about her conflict with Wang Xuewen and continued until the end with the reflection in the water. Her thoughts were clear, and she showed no fear after almost dying.

The square-faced policeman stared at Qian Xiao's expression. This child was a bit strange. He didn't seem like a seven-year-old who grew up in the countryside and had never been to school. Could there be something wrong with this child?

Qian Xiao saw the man's expression but didn't explain. She wasn't afraid of being investigated; she was a native of the area, and even if they found out about her, she wouldn't have any problems.

The police officer in charge of taking notes was amazed by the girl's courage and meticulousness at such a young age, but there were still some details he needed to inquire about.

The square-faced police officer, Zhou, asked, "If I remember correctly, you're only seven years old, right? Wang Xuewen should be thirteen this year and he's a boy. You're much shorter than Wang Xuewen. How could you possibly handle six boys in their teens?"

Qian Xiao didn't like this Zhou Gong'an. She always felt that he was the kind of person who was very self-centered and stubborn, always believing that his own answer was the correct answer. To put it bluntly, he only believed in himself.

“I’ve been learning martial arts from my great-grandfather since I was little, and I’m stronger than most kids. It’s not hard for me to deal with a few people who loaf around all day and steal chickens and dogs. But I’m very careful and they’re all just superficial injuries. They’ll heal in a couple of days. I can’t just stand there and wait for someone to beat me up, can I?”

Zhou Gong'an looked Qian Xiao up and down. This statement was not convincing at all. This girl looked like she was always hungry. She was so thin that she was almost skin and bones.

Qian Xiao clearly disliked that look in his eyes. How did someone like that become a police officer?

Police Officer Fang took notes and sensed Old Zhou's displeasure in his eyes. He quickly ended the conversation by saying, "Okay, we'll come back to ask if there's anything unclear later. Take good care of yourself and recover."

Police Officer Fang also disliked working with Old Zhou. This man was stubborn and inflexible. Once he made up his mind about something, even if the facts were right in front of him, he would never admit that he was wrong. The young girl was the victim, but he made it seem like she was the perpetrator.

He was skeptical of what the little girl said, but it was easy to verify. He could find out immediately whether she was lying by simply taking a walk around the village.

Sure enough, the investigation confirmed that what the little girl said was true. The child looked thin but was as strong as a strong laborer, which showed that the child was not lying. Besides, this is how children in the village grow up, and fighting is normal.

The police walked around the village and took away the six children, which caused an uproar throughout the village.

"My goodness, I thought those Wang family kids were just petty thieves, how could they dare to take someone's life?"

"No doubt about it, it was really vicious. You guys didn't see what Erdan looked like that day, he was covered in blood."

"I told you that kid was no good. You know, last year, wasn't it him who set fire to Big Neck's woodpile?" That was really scary. If Big Neck's son hadn't gotten up to use the bathroom that night, the whole family would have been burned to death. You know, that woodpile was connected to the house.

"It's really hard to say. How can a child who hasn't even grown up be so cruel?"

The woman who heard this curled her lip and said, "If the upper beam is crooked, the lower beam will be crooked too. How can bad bamboo grow good bamboo shoots?" This person was obviously someone who didn't get along with the Wang family.

“Mother, when I get back I must give my children a good talking-to. They should stay away from these kids. They’re young and yet they dare to kill people.”

“That’s right. I’ll go back and have a good talk with my kids. I’ll tell them that these outsiders are unreliable. Look at all the people who got into trouble, they were all outsiders.”

Everyone agreed with this in their hearts, but no one spoke up in agreement. After all, the government had arranged for these people who had fled the famine to stay, and there was nothing they could do even if they disagreed.

"Oh my god, look at those people, aren't they those six families? What are they up to?"

"Is that even a question? They must have gone to Erdan's house. After Erdan did all that to them, how could they be so polite?"

"Absolutely, ptooey, shameless."

"Oh, stop talking! Go home and get the men here. With so many people, don't let your uncle get the short end of the stick."

"Yes, yes, go home and get your husbands to help. Tell them that none of these outsiders are good people."

"And the village chief, don't forget to call him 'village chief'."

Qian Xiao was awakened by a noisy commotion and crying. When she opened her eyes, she saw her two younger brothers guarding her: "San Dan, Si Dan, what are you doing here? Where are Mom and the others? Who's arguing outside?"

"Big sister, you're awake? Would you like some water?"

"I'm not thirsty yet, and you haven't told me who's arguing outside," the voices sounded like they were coming from right in front of their own house.

"Who else could it be but Wang Xuewen and his group?" Si Dan said, pursing his lips.

Qian Xiao frowned, knowing that if she reported it to the police, these families would cause trouble. She refused to believe that such a big thing could go unnoticed by those adults. If they knew, they could act like nothing had happened; that showed they weren't good people.

She said it didn't matter whether she reported it to the police or not, she would always get her revenge later. At this time, her legal awareness was extremely weak. You could count the number of people in the whole village who knew the law on one hand. She thought that everything could be resolved by making a fuss.

She couldn't reason with them anymore; she believed more in using her fists to reason with them, thinking that once they were beaten into submission and scared, they would naturally behave.

Thinking back to her past life as a pure and obedient girl, she didn't need to show her violent side. In this day and age, if she were too obedient, she would probably be bullied to the point of having no bones left.
