"A hundred already, I've saved up for so many years, what's the use? Good deeds are supposed to be rewarded, but where is my reward?"
Looking at the merit points on the Heavenly Book that had already reached a round number, Feng Bingwen grumbled in dissatisfaction. He turned over in bed, recalling what had happened a few days ago, feeling somewhat indignant.
"Even a stray ghost can bully me, what kind of good fortune is this?"
Whoosh!
With the sound of a book turning, in Feng Bingwen's consciousness, the Heavenly Book, which was radiating billions of rays of light, suddenly shone brightly with the number "100" after good deeds.
The radiance emanating from the Heavenly Book was already bright, magnificent, and dazzling to Feng Bingwen, but when the "One Hundred" after the good deed began to glow, he found it dazzling.
This unexpected turn of events surprised Feng Bingwen more than he was; it was the first time such a surprising change had occurred since he discovered the Heavenly Book.
The light emanating from "One Hundred" was dazzling white, but a hint of yellow gradually appeared within the white. The brilliant light suddenly flickered and transformed into flames, beginning to burn.
Feng Bingwen watched this scene with great anticipation, but after the slightly yellowish white flames burned out, the Heavenly Book remained unchanged.
Oh, no, it's not that there's no change; the "one hundred" merits accumulated over the years have now become "zero." All the merits Feng Bingwen had built up over the years have vanished.
"What the hell?"
Feng Bingwen was stunned. His previously restrained consciousness wavered, and the Heavenly Book disappeared.
After Feng Bingwen calmed his mind and entered a meditative state, he looked at the Heavenly Book again to confirm that it was correct. He saw that the good deeds he had accumulated, which had been a hundred, had been reduced to zero and turned into nothingness. Only the naked "one" after his evil deeds remained, which seemed to be mocking his behavior over the years.
"What's this?"
Feng Bingwen was furious. He didn't even bother to sleep anymore. He turned over and sat up in bed. He looked left and right, but couldn't find any changes in himself.
After calming my mind and entering a meditative state, I confirmed for the third time that the good deeds recorded in the heavenly book had been cleared, leaving nothing behind.
"Are you kidding me!"
The child grumbled in dissatisfaction, feeling extremely uncomfortable.
Although there was no real loss, he felt a sense of unease, a feeling of unfulfilled expectations.
However, he was no ordinary child. Although he harbored resentment, he quickly vented and relieved it, then lay down to sleep again. There was no need to disrupt his sleep schedule for such trivial matters; it would be a losing proposition.
Soon, almost imperceptible, even breathing filled the room as the child drifted off to sleep.
Chirp chirp!
In the early morning, before the sun had even shone through the window into the room, a string of clear, bell-like birdsong reached the ears. The child squirmed in bed, and the next moment, he suddenly opened his eyes and looked towards the window.
On the windowsill, a bird with a tail shimmering with brilliant purple light was chirping. Upon seeing the child awaken, it let out a joyful cry, spread its small wings, and with a gentle flutter, transformed into a streak of purple light, disappearing into the dim dawn sky.
"?"
Feng Bingwen was a little dazed as he watched the familiar bird fly away. He was still a bit confused and didn't know what had just happened. If he remembered correctly, that bird should be the purple-tailed sparrow that he had released a few days ago.
"What are you trying to do?"
Although it was already springtime, it was still the time of day and night, and the spring breeze blowing in from the window still carried a bit of winter chill. So, the child muttered something and prepared to turn over and continue sleeping.
"Huh?"
However, he still noticed a flash of red out of the corner of his eye. Feng Bingwen got out of bed and walked to the window, where he saw a broken branch with a dozen or so red fruits hanging from it on the windowsill.
Is this repaying a debt of gratitude?
The child couldn't help but laugh. The broken branch wasn't big, only about the size of a palm. The leaves and twigs on it were still fresh and juicy, as if it had just been broken. The fruit hanging on it was even smaller, about the size of a fingernail, bright red and shiny, looking incredibly tempting.
"It really is the Spirit Sparrow!"
Feng Bingwen praised him, saying that releasing the sparrow was just a casual act, and he didn't expect anything in return. But now that the little sparrow had brought him a string of fruit, it was truly a delightful surprise.
In his delight, he casually picked up an unknown wild fruit from the windowsill. Although it looked delicious, he wouldn't easily put such an unfamiliar fruit into his mouth.
"Huh?"
Feng Bingwen frowned, realizing that something was amiss. The moment he picked up the bunch of fruit, he sensed something was wrong, because the fruit was warm, lacking the coolness that fruit should have.
"Still glowing?"
After noticing something amiss, the child held up the fruit and examined it closely. Sure enough, he discovered something unusual again. In the early morning, before the sun had risen and before the night had faded, the dim light of the night allowed him to see that the dozen or so fruits were actually covered with a faint red glow.
"Spirit bird! Spirit bird!"
Feng Bingwen held the obviously abnormal fruit, as if he had realized something. He thought of the good deeds that had mysteriously disappeared last night. It was hard not to connect the two things in less than a night.
"Is this my reward for good deeds?"
Although he had some guesses, Feng Bingwen wasn't sure. The fruit's origin was too mysterious, and he didn't recognize it. Even if he knew that eating it might have benefits, he wasn't going to gamble.
Chirp chirp!
Just as he hesitated, a purple streak of light fell on the window again. It was the bird that had flown away that had returned. It looked at Feng Bingwen, who was holding the fruit and staring blankly without eating it, and let out a series of urgent chirps, as if it was somewhat annoyed.
Even though the bird was urging him on, Feng Bingwen remained unmoved. Seeing the little brat being so cautious, the purple-tailed bird got annoyed. With a flap of its small wings, it jumped onto Feng Bingwen's hand and, before he could react, pecked off a small fruit.
Feng Bingwen watched as the bird ate a fruit in his hand in two quick bites and swallowed it. Then he noticed a faint purple light shimmering on the bird's beautiful tail feathers. Although it was faint, it was exceptionally eye-catching.
Seeing this, Feng Bingwen immediately relaxed. He watched as the bird, which seemed to have changed slightly, fluttered its wings and flew up, landing on the windowsill. He smiled, reached out, picked a vermilion fruit, and put it in his mouth.
The child gently pursed his lips, and a faint warm current flowed from his mouth into his throat and into his stomach. Then, a surge of heat spread from his chest to his whole body, making him feel warm and comfortable.
