Chapter 4 The Book of Good and Evil

"Xiao Wenzi, are you feeling alright now? You should be feeling fine now!"

The elderly man who was called to a stop was in good spirits, smiling as he watched a group of village children running towards him.

"I'm fine now!"

Feng Bingwen answered with great vigor.

"It's good that you're alright."

"Second Master, what's wrong with me? Why do I get sick every time I go to the back of the village, and then I get better after my grandma calls for me to get better?"

Is this the first time you've been startled?

The old man was somewhat surprised to hear this question. Almost no children in the village cared about such things.

Children are innocent and carefree, they don't take anything to heart. When they are sick, they lie in bed crying loudly, but when they recover, they run around like wild monkeys.

"first."

Feng Bingwen confessed truthfully.

"Big brother has protected you so well."

The old man exclaimed from the bottom of his heart that he was Feng Bingwen's true second master and Feng Lingjun's younger brother.

"Second Master, what exactly is going on?"

Feng Bingwen persisted relentlessly, displaying an unyielding determination to get to the bottom of things. He felt he wouldn't be able to sleep well until he got to the bottom of this.

"hey-hey!"

The second uncle didn't answer immediately. Instead, he looked up at the blazing sun in the sky, glanced towards the back of the village, and then spoke.

"What else could it be? Your grandpa must have told you countless times not to run to the back, but you bunch of little brats never listen and always break the rules. That area in the back isn't clean."

Is there something dirty inside?

Feng Bingwen wasn't surprised at all; he had already guessed it, and now it had been confirmed.

"What else could it be?"

Second Uncle, fearing the little guy was frightened, quickly reassured him, otherwise his eldest sister wouldn't let him off the hook.

"Don't run around like that again next time. As long as you don't go over there, you'll be fine. Just cover your head and go to sleep when it gets dark. Don't wander around at night either. Just do what you normally do. Nothing will happen. Our village has a local earth god."

"Lord Earth God!"

Feng Bingwen remained unmoved. He had gone to worship with the old man during festivals, but he hadn't noticed anything special. This time, the local earth god didn't protect him either.

However, since there are unclean things, there must be gods or immortals who can restrain or even suppress them to maintain balance.

"On the first day of next month, you should go with your grandma to burn incense to get rid of the bad luck. The local earth god will also bless you with peace and safety."

"Uh-huh!"

Feng Bingwen nodded obediently, but he didn't have much hope. He felt that the City God in the county town was more reliable. Although he had never been to the county, he had heard that the City God was very effective.

"Oh, right, Second Master!"

Seeing the old man in front of him pick up his hoe and leave, Feng Bingwen looked at the little kid beside him who was listening intently to the interesting story, and quickly asked a more important question.

"We went together, so why was I the only one who got scared?"

"Of course it's just you! If you five energetic youngsters are all scared, then our village should be moved. Who can live in this place anymore?"

Upon hearing Feng Bingwen's question, the second uncle couldn't help but laugh again.

"Only one person would be scared?"

"right."

"Then why me?"

Feng Bingwen was very dissatisfied.

"It must be because you have the weakest body and the least yang energy, so they specifically target you to bully you."

The old man's tone was very certain, which made Feng Bingwen purse his lips and feel even more unconvinced.

"Those things are like that, bullying the weak and fearing the strong! When you grow a little older, they won't be able to scare you anymore."

After saying that, Uncle Er didn't care what the kids thought, picked up his hoe and went to the field to weed.

“Brother Wenzi, my grandfather said you have a weak constitution.”

Just as Feng Bingwen was pondering, a child who was a head taller than him and as strong as a calf approached him with a grin.

"Go away, you're the weak one!"

Feng Bingwen rolled his eyes in annoyance. In terms of physique, he was indeed not the best among the children in the village, but he should not be at the bottom either. However, facts speak louder than words.

Of the five people traveling together, he was the only one unlucky enough to contract the virus. According to his second uncle's bullying-the-weak-and-cowardly rhetoric, it was undoubtedly because he was the weakest.

"Brother Wenzi, there's an ant nest here!"

A shout came from above.

"Let's have a peeing contest and see who can pee the farthest!"

"OK!"

During the day, the village children gather together and play games that adults would consider childish. Feng Bingwen occasionally acts very mature, but most of the time, he is just an innocent and carefree child.

However, it was precisely because of his occasional maturity that Feng Bingwen naturally became the leader of the children in Fengjia Village. Even though he was neither the oldest nor the strongest, he was able to make decisions when it mattered most.

As dusk fell and wisps of smoke drifted over Fengjia Village, the adults' calls echoed from house to house, and the children, who had been playing all day, went home.

After finishing dinner with the care of his two elderly parents at home, Feng Bingwen looked at the night sky outside, which had already painted half the sky with darkness, and the last rays of the setting sun on the mountainside. He quickly slipped into his room, closed the door and window, and crawled into bed.

There's not much entertainment at night. What can a child like him do late at night? As for reading, forget about it. He's already read through the entire cabinet of books his grandfather collected, and he knows some of them so well he almost knows them by heart.

However, lying in bed too early only results in closing your eyes but being unable to fall asleep no matter how much you toss and turn, because you're not sleepy at all.

Left with no other option, Feng Bingwen could only resort to the pastimes he usually engaged in when bored. He pressed his tongue against his palate, held his breath, and emptied his mind, as endless darkness engulfed him.

After an unknown amount of time, just as she was regaining consciousness yet seemingly falling into a deep sleep, countless rays of light burst forth, illuminating the darkness with boundless radiance. A book slowly emerged from this boundless light, its cover bearing four ancient seal characters that shone brightly.

The Book of Good and Evil!

With a single thought, the book was opened, and on the title page, there was another line of ancient seal script: Good deeds will be rewarded, and evil deeds will be punished; it's not that retribution won't come, it's just that the time hasn't arrived yet.

When this page is turned over, in the center of the next page, there are three lines of ancient seal script.

Name: Feng Bingwen

Good deeds: seventy-nine

Evil Deeds: One

These few simple characters, all written in ancient seal script, shine brightly, their brilliance undiminished even in the light.

But when he turned the page, it was completely blank, with no words at all. However, Feng Bingwen was now quite adept at it, and he silently recited in his mind,

"Records of good deeds".
