Chapter 9 Making a Small Profit

There were two cages, each containing twelve wild rabbits.

Yang Zheng carried one in each hand directly to the wild game stall he had inquired about yesterday.

At this moment, the stall owners, a married couple, are both busy.

The man was moving things, and the woman was answering the phone.

Upon seeing Yang Zheng appear, the couple immediately stopped what they were doing and came over.

"You brought it?"

"Um!"

Yang Zheng placed the two cages on the ground, pointed to the wild rabbits inside, and said, "There are twenty-four rabbits in total. As you can see, they are generally quite large. The smallest weighs at least three jin (1.5 kg), and some of the larger ones probably weigh around five jin (2.5 kg)..."

Upon hearing this, the stall owners' eyes lit up.

"Let me see."

The male stall owner shook the cage, and through the holes in the cage, one could clearly see that all the plump wild rabbits were huddled together inside.

Then he lifted the cage onto the scale, his expression one of great satisfaction.

The main reason was the wild rabbits that Yang Zheng brought; they were of such high quality.

Almost all the rabbits were completely unharmed, without a single scratch.

This is extremely rare.

It's important to know that wild rabbits are usually caught with traps, and by the time the prey is collected, all of the rabbit's legs are broken.

Injured rabbits generally do not survive.

Especially now that the weather is hot, if the wounds aren't dealt with quickly, maggots can easily infest them. Sometimes, we have to slaughter the rabbits ahead of time to sell them for meat.

Selling wild rabbits for meat doesn't yield high profits, and they're not easy to sell either.

After all, the weather is hot now, and many people come to sell wild game. They all prefer to have it killed live, because they want it to be fresh.

Dead food always tastes worse and isn't as delicious.

The wild rabbits that Yang Zheng brought were not only fat and large, but none of them were injured.

Rabbits like these can be kept for a long time.

Yang Zheng looked at the stall owners and said calmly, "As you just saw, each of my wild rabbits weighs at least three pounds on average, so if the price is too low, it definitely won't work."

The male stall owner shook the two cages again and said, "How about this, I'll add ten yuan to each rabbit, sixty yuan a rabbit, that's not a low price."

Sixty-one?

To be honest, Yang Zheng was still not satisfied with the price, feeling it was a bit low.

So he shook his head and said, "It's too low. I just looked at the rabbits you bought before, and they were all very small, probably only two or three pounds. Mine are so big, so your price is unfair."

At this moment, the stall owner's wife spoke up, "Young man, I see you came so early, you're really interested in selling, and we're really interested in buying. How about this, we'll add five dollars to each one."

Upon hearing this, Yang Zheng thought for a moment and said, "I won't say much more. Eighty yuan each, take them all or leave now..."

Before he could finish speaking, the stall owners waved their hands repeatedly and said, "Eighty is impossible. If we buy at that price, we won't make any profit at all."

"Hey handsome, we work from dawn till dusk, all to make some money. If there's no profit, would you do it?"

"Sixty-five for each one. This is the highest price we've ever paid since we opened. Seriously, in all these years we've been here, we've never offered anyone this high price."

Yang Zheng didn't take such a statement seriously at all.

He looked at the proprietress and felt that she was still in charge here, so he emphasized again: "Eighty each, take it or leave it."

"We really can't accept eighty, because we don't make much money from it."

The couple still refused to agree.

At this point, Yang Zheng lost patience with them and picked up the cage to leave.

The stall owner offered too low a price for recycling, which he found unacceptable.

He planned to take the rabbit to other stalls to ask, and if the prices were all below sixty-five, he might as well set up a stall in the market to sell it.

If the wild game stall sells it for 41 jin, then he'll sell it for 35 jin.

If we can't sell them at 35 yuan per jin, then we'll sell them at 31 yuan per jin.

Even if it's sold for 31 kilograms, a wild rabbit weighing over three kilograms can still fetch at least a hundred yuan.

It's just a matter of taking a little more time and going through a bit more trouble.

Just as Yang Zheng was about to leave with the rabbit, the couple who owned the game stall whispered a few words to each other, and then the woman spoke again:

"Hey handsome, I'll add five more dollars for you, seventy dollars each."

"This price is already very reasonable. If you think it's acceptable, we'll close the deal. If you're still not satisfied, then there's nothing we can do."

"I know what you're thinking. Even if you go elsewhere to ask, the price won't exceed this. How about it?"

Seventy yuan each.

Yang Zheng stopped in his tracks. He felt that this price was probably the bottom line for the stall owners.

Should we just sell it?

I estimate that other places won't offer a recycling price higher than this.

It's too much trouble to set up a stall and sell them yourself.

I have to kill rabbits for others, and also buy scales and tools...

Thinking of this, he turned around, nodded, and placed both cages on the ground.

"Fine, seventy it is. I'm too lazy to run."

"Count the cages and return them to me."

The male stall owner nodded and immediately took the two cages away.

Then they took the wild rabbits out one by one and put them into cages in their shop.

Looking at the lively, wild rabbit in his hand, the male stall owner was extremely satisfied.

They've been doing this for many years; they can tell at a glance whether it's a wild rabbit or not.

Wild rabbits have long, slender, and powerful limbs, and relatively large ears and tails. In terms of both appearance and size, they are very different from farmed rabbits.

The male stall owner then put all the wild rabbits into his cage.

At this moment, he was quite surprised, so he looked up and asked, "Young man, weren't your rabbits caught in a trap? How come they're all unharmed?"

Yang Zheng smiled and casually lied, "They were all caught in a trap."

The male stall owner said, "Your skills are quite good; you can actually put so many on."

Yang Zheng waved his hand, "I didn't do it. I was selling it for someone else, just to earn some extra money."

Upon hearing this, the male stall owner suddenly realized that the man was a middleman. No wonder he had been haggling with him for so long over the price; it turned out he was just trying to make a profit from the difference.

After the number of rabbits was counted, the male stall owner returned the two empty cages to Yang Zheng.

At this moment, his wife had already calculated the bill, and came up to Yang Zheng with a stack of banknotes, saying, "Twenty-four rabbits, seventy-one in total, 1680 yuan. Please count it."

Yang Zheng took the money from her hand, carefully counted it, and it was exactly 1680. He nodded and said, "Thank you..."

After saying that, he picked up the cage and prepared to leave.

The male stall owner somehow got hold of a pack of cigarettes and handed him one, saying, "Hey handsome, have a smoke, and let's add each other on WeChat. You can send anything you need here in the future."

Yang Zheng took the cigarette, lit it, took a deep drag, and laughed, "Don't you not smoke?"

The male stall owner also laughed and said, "Sometimes when we have repeat customers coming into the store, we always have to give them one."

Yang Zheng took out his phone, added the male stall owner on WeChat, and then casually asked, "What's the price for wild boar and pheasant?"

The male stall owner said, "Wild boar bristles are seventeen yuan per jin. As for pheasants, it depends on the size: large ones are eighty yuan each, and small ones are fifty yuan each."

Upon hearing this, Yang Zheng nodded and said, "Alright, if I have any wild game in the future, as long as your prices are fair, I'll send it to you first."

After saying that, he stuffed the money into his pocket, picked up the two empty cages, left the market, and rode his electric bike home.
