Upon hearing Lu's words, Lin withdrew her hand.
It's not like he's Peng San's biological son. She's just interested in him now because he's new to her, but she doesn't necessarily have to get involved.
Peng San glanced at the thin, small child in his arms and said with some surprise, "He's so small, does he really not need to drink milk?"
He remembered that all the children his age in the manor were drinking milk.
Madam Lu shook her head. "After giving birth to Heng'er, my health was not good, so I weaned Heng'er early."
Seeing that she was hurting, Peng San stopped talking and looked at Lin Shi, saying, "You should go back by yourself. Come to the main courtyard early tomorrow morning, and I will take you back to Jizhou."
"Thank you, sir." She bowed slightly to Peng San, then left.
After thinking for a moment, Madam Lu still advised, "She probably isn't familiar with Su Qian. Taking her back might not be of any use."
Peng San waved his hand dismissively and said, "Don't worry about this." After a pause, he added, "Since you don't trust others, then keep Heng'er in your room."
Lu's face turned pale. Was Peng San angry?
"Husband?"
Peng San, still holding his adorable son, didn't look up. "What is it?"
With a trembling voice, Madam Lu asked, "Aren't you taking my son and me with you tomorrow?"
Peng San looked at his thin, frail son in his arms, then at his wife who was nothing but skin and bones beside him, and frowned slightly. "Where are you going? Haven't you caused enough trouble already?"
With that kind of physique, how can he travel?
Madam Lu's face turned pale instantly. A woman in the inner courtyard who loses a man's favor has nothing.
Can she and Heng'er really survive?
Peng San, belatedly realizing that something was wrong with the person beside him, pulled Lu into his arms and asked, "What's wrong with you?"
"I..." Lu didn't know what to say.
As a woman, she should act coquettishly.
But looking at the person in front of her, she simply couldn't bring herself to say those words.
Seeing her like this, Peng San felt a pang of heartache. He sighed and said to her gently, "You've suffered these past few days and your body is very weak. How could I bear to let you work so hard?"
“But…” Madam Lu wanted to say something more, but Peng San interrupted her, “No buts!”
His expression was serious, as if he were looking at a child who didn't know any better.
Suddenly, Lu felt an urge to cry. She wanted to throw herself into Peng San's arms and wail, wanting to cry out all the grievances she had suffered these past few days.
Seeing her like this, Peng San sighed and said, "Cry if you want to. Remember, from today onwards, I am your husband."
From now on, you just need to hide behind me.
Madam Lu couldn't hold back any longer and burst into tears.
She knew she had nothing, and how her future unfolded depended entirely on Peng San's mood.
She was terrified and uneasy, but she couldn't give up.
Peng San looked at the girl in his arms with heartache. She was crying so hard that snot and tears were streaming down her face, but he couldn't feel disgusted at all.
This is the person he wants to protect; how could he possibly despise her?
He pulled a handkerchief from his pocket, twirled his fingers on it, and gently wiped away Lu's tears, drop by drop. "Don't be afraid."
He knew that he wasn't sad or upset, but rather feeling wronged and afraid.
In these end times, who isn't afraid?
Even he, a man, was so afraid that he never left the city lord's mansion after the apocalypse.
