Chapter 314 The Child

Old Madam Chang knew that Chang Jiao was going against her. She wiped away the tears from the corners of her eyes, looked at Chang Jiao with a serious expression, and said, "For the past ten years or so, my Chang family has provided you with shelter from the wind and rain and has never mistreated you in the slightest."

Chang Jiao knew that her maternal grandmother was going to settle accounts with her.

"so what?"

In fact, she didn't owe the Chang family anything. She was just staying there and didn't spend a single penny of their money.

Logically speaking, what happened back then should have been enough to offset the rent over the years.

Looking at her icy gaze, Old Madam Chang continued, "It's time to repay what you've eaten and used in my Chang family."

I don't need you to do anything; just raise the child to sixteen.

Chang Jiao's lips curled up slightly, and she said sarcastically, "Grandmother means that I can leave the room for that child?"

What did she eat at Chang's house?

Madam Chang's actions truly chilled her to the bone.

"You lived in the Chang family's house, but you didn't eat a single grain of rice from their food?"

"Yes." Chang Jiao replied decisively. "Back in the day, the servants often called us outsiders, saying we were lazy in the Chang family."

Therefore, everything I eat and use comes from my mother's dowry.

Even if an elder were to bestow something upon her, the nanny would immediately estimate the price, choose an ordinary item, and send it back.

Even ordinary relatives don't have as much of a clear-cut relationship as I do with the Chang family.

Before, she only thought that the nanny was going too far, but now she realized the benefits of it.

Thinking of the old woman who had turned into a zombie, Chang Jiao's eyes welled up with tears.

If she had a nanny, how could she have ended up in this situation?

How could her heart be any different after breaking with her maternal grandmother?

In the past, it was Madam Chang who managed the household affairs. Now that she has learned the truth, she is speechless.

"I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry."

She was too ashamed to ask for anything more.

Seeing the old lady Chang crying uncontrollably, Chang Jiao sighed and said, "Please take care, Grandmother."

"What will become of my great-great-grandson?" Now all that's left is this old hag, what will become of that child?

Chang Jiao took a deep breath and said, "I said, as long as I have food to eat, I will never let her go hungry."

"But you will have your own children someday."

Upon hearing this, Chang Jiao abruptly stood up and asked, "What does Grandmother want to say?"

Does she have to remain childless for the rest of her life for her to feel at ease?

What will she do when she gets old?

Chang Jiao wanted to leave just like that, never daring to care about Old Madam Chang's life or death again, but looking at her head covered in silver frost, she couldn't bring herself to do it.

How many more years does she have left?

Why should she upset her?

Chang Jiao sat opposite Old Madam Chang without moving, and said calmly, "Grandmother, please don't overthink it. I will do what I should do. I won't make promises I shouldn't keep."

She wouldn't be foolish enough to risk her entire life.

Her words effectively dashed Old Madam Chang's hopes.

That was the last child of the Chang family. If something happened to him, the Chang family line would be cut off. How could she not worry?

But she knew she couldn't hold on any longer; she wouldn't be able to raise that child until he grew up. Her body was already beyond saving.

"Is Madam Chang home?" A knock sounded at the door.

Chang Jiao responded, tidied her makeup, and opened the door. "What brings you here?"

Looking at the child in his arms, Chang Jiao couldn't help but smile bitterly; she had indeed been right.
