Chapter 60 Twisting and Turning

Ashileyan, a princess of the southern desert, fought on the battlefield from a young age. After Yanbeimo seized the northern desert, the desert was torn apart. Ashileyan personally went to the battlefield to fight against him, but suffered repeated defeats, and the two became sworn enemies.

More than a decade ago, Monan attacked the Western Regions and killed Helian Ye's uncle. After Helian Ye took control of the Western Regions, he frequently fought against Monan, and the two families had a deep-seated grudge.

However, this is how it is on the battlefield. Since Mo Nan wants to make a move and join forces with the Western Regions this time, it naturally has to put on a good show.

"We'll join forces to help the young master seize Beiyou. What does the young master think?"

Helian Ye seemed to remember something, his eyebrows and eyes showing a wild expression.

"Does anyone really want to do business with me?"

He laughed, "Tell me about it."

Ashileyan said calmly, "One hundred thousand iron cavalry from the south of the desert will surround you from the rear to hold off the troops of Prince An. After the young master succeeds, I hope that the young master will cede Beiyou to the desert to help me quell the desert rebellion."

"Wow, you have quite an appetite."

Helian Ye raised his eyes slightly, a wicked smile on his face.

Ashileyan raised an eyebrow. "The Central Plains are in turmoil, the Nine Provinces are in chaos, and 560,000 iron cavalry from Yanbei and Moli are marching north. The Western Regions may suffer another battle like the one in the past."

"What does this have to do with you?"

Ashleyan saw through his mockery and stood up.

"Since the young master has no intention, I will take my leave."

After traveling for several more days on official roads, Chu Changning and his entourage arrived in the capital.

Yan Beimo took her to stay at the royal post station.

She wanted to inquire about Chu Chang Le's affairs, but there was no news from the palace for a long time. It was said that His Majesty was unwell and that a banquet would be held in the palace in two days to invite envoys from various countries to discuss the war in the north.

With Shuangyue watching over him, Chu Changning could hardly go anywhere.

She thought for a moment, then took the tea and snacks to the study.

She had just finished discussing matters inside when a group of unfamiliar faces came out. She quickly took her things and hid behind the corridor, waiting until they were far away before going over.

There was no one guarding the entrance.

She went inside by herself.

To everyone's surprise, upon entering, they found four people.

Yan Beimo was casually draped in a robe and reclining on a small couch. Opposite him at the table was Xie Xuan, and the two were playing chess.

Not far away by the window, Cui Linyuan and Wang Hezhan were talking, enjoying tea and admiring the flowers.

She paused, put down the tea and snacks, and was about to leave.

Yan Beimo called out to her.

"come over."

Chu Changning paused, then turned and slowly walked over.

"What's up?"

He held the white chess piece, didn't even look at her, and spoke in a flat voice.

Chu Changning glanced around at the people around him with concern, and said that nothing was wrong.

Yan Beimo paused, glancing at her sideways.

Their eyes met in mid-air.

He chuckled, slowly put down the chess piece, and gestured to Xie Xuan opposite him.

Xie Xuan snapped open his fan and chuckled softly.

"They're kicking us out."

The two people not far away also looked over.

Chu Changning didn't care about the gazes of the others.

Xie Xuan clicked his tongue twice, then jumped down and followed the two men outside.

Wang Hezhan turned around and glanced at Chu Changning, raising an eyebrow.

"Is Jinling really built?"

Xie Xuan ignored him and instead asked a question.

"When was A-Wan and my second brother's wedding?"

Wang Hezhan paused, then looked at him meaningfully.

"When did you start caring about this?"

"Now that my sister-in-law has come into the family, can't you at least show some concern for her?"

The sounds outside gradually faded into the distance.

Yan Beimo leaned lazily against the soft pillows, looking her up and down.

Warm incense burned in the golden lion-shaped incense burner, its smoke rising gently.

Just as Chu Changning was about to speak, he was ordered around to serve tea and other items.

"I--"

"What, you want me to ask about Chu Chang Le for you?"

Yan Beimo took the teacup and saw right through her thoughts.

Chu Changning scoffed inwardly, but smiled and gently sat down on the edge of the couch, placing her hand on his bent knee.

"Wasn't it said that the assassination attempt on His Majesty failed and she was imprisoned? Now that His Majesty has woken up, what about her?"

Yan Beimo glanced at her sideways and said jokingly, "Maybe he's dead."

"---"

He suddenly drew out the last syllable, "Well, he might still be locked up."

I was just teasing her.

Chu Changning cursed under her breath, tightening her grip on his legs.

“You’re far away in Zhongdu, yet you know about the situation in Kyoto. Surely you know whether Anning is dead or not.”

"Not really."

Chu Changning, "---"

She knew he was deliberately not telling her, and she couldn't be bothered to ask anymore.

"Then you go ahead with your work, I'll head back now."

As soon as she finished speaking, he suddenly pulled her up and she fell into his arms.

Chu Changning was nearly knocked over the table leg by his forceful and rude manner, and quickly grabbed his arm to steady him.

She gritted her teeth, "Be gentle."

Yan Beimo casually lifted her up and placed her on his lap.

She straddled his waist.

This position made Chu Changning uncomfortable, and she wanted to push him away.

But he held her waist tightly, making it impossible for her to move.

Yan Beimo enjoyed watching her struggle, and without saying a word, he simply observed her calmly.

Chu Changning also noticed his gaze and knew that he had a strange personality, so he stopped struggling and pressed down hard, putting all his weight on him, as if he wanted to crush him to death with a rock.

Yan Beimo chuckled, "If you keep wriggling around, I'll take care of you."

Listen to what he's saying.

Chu Changning found it hard to imagine that this was Lanling Yan Er, who possessed the beauty of a jade mountain and the appearance of a celestial being. If the world knew his true face, how astonished they would be.

She didn't want to argue with him, and said calmly.

"My stomach hurts, I need to go back and take my medicine."

Ever since it came into existence, I've been forced to drink that dark, bitter juice every day, supposedly for my health.

"Don't you want to know what will happen to Chu Chang Le?"

He looked directly at her, a hint of teasing in his eyes.

Chu Changning was not intimidated at all and looked him straight in the eye.

“If you have something to say, then say it. A man shouldn’t act like a woman.”

Yan Beimo, "---

His expression turned cold as he looked at her with a stern gaze, exuding a strong sense of pressure.

Chu Changning felt a chill run down his spine, realizing he had said the wrong thing. He coughed lightly and remained silent.

Yan Beimo lifted her chin and spoke gently.

"When asking someone for a favor, you should have the right attitude."

Although his voice sounded gentle, it gave off a chilling and menacing aura.

Chu Changning knew what he meant, cursed him inwardly as a lecher, and moved her lips closer.

Yan Beimo didn't move. He brushed a stray hair from her ear with one hand and pulled her into his arms with the other.

She obediently nestled on his waist, hooked her arms around his neck, and kissed him.

In the dimly lit room, the two embraced tightly and kissed.

After an unknown amount of time, Chu Changning couldn't take it anymore and turned her head away.

"What would be the best outcome if Chang Le murdered the emperor?"

Yan Beimo paused, his voice hoarse, "He's not dead."

Chu Changning felt a sense of relief and let out a long sigh.

After a moment, she tentatively asked, "May I go to the palace with you?"

Yan Beimo glanced at her sideways, his smile chilling.

"Today you beg me to take you into the palace, so tomorrow shouldn't you ask me to rescue your imperial sister from the palace? And the day after tomorrow you'll be trying to incite me to attack Shen Yan and force him to abdicate?"
