"Girl, girl---"
A maid brought in the medicinal meal and saw the person lying on the couch as if trapped in a nightmare, so she quickly nudged him.
There was no response, so she quickly called out.
Hearing the noise, the high shaman came in and saw the person on the cold bed. He swiftly pierced her acupoints with the needle in his hand.
Chu Changning suddenly opened her eyes, and stared in astonishment at the person in front of her.
"Young lady, you've almost recovered now, so don't sleep in this cold bed for too long."
The high shaman said something and then turned and left.
Chu Changning snapped out of his daze, sat up, and leaned against the bedside.
"Young lady, this is a medicinal soup. It's time to drink it."
"good."
Located in the northern frontier, the local cuisine is quite different from that of the Central Plains, but the Western Regions offer a wide variety of delicacies, which Chu Changning enjoys.
She had been awake for a month. When she opened her eyes, she saw the maid who had barged in. She rested weakly for two days before Helian Ye arrived.
Helian Ye said that he brought her up from the bottom of the cave, found that she was still conscious, and then brought her here for treatment.
Although she had lost all five senses at the time, she only felt Helian Ye's presence after she came ashore from the snow cave. Then, she felt herself being picked up and taken away from there.
Helian Ye snatched the corpse simply because he didn't want Yan Beimo to have an easy time, but he did inadvertently save her life.
When she woke up, she wanted to leave, but he wouldn't let her. There were many guards, and the place was very remote. She didn't know which godforsaken place in the northern frontier it was, surrounded by mountains and rarely inhabited.
She wanted to leave, but she couldn't leave at all.
But Helian Ye seemed very busy. After she woke up and saw that she was feeling much better, he left in a hurry.
"Did the young master say when he would arrive?"
The maidservant responded respectfully upon hearing her words.
"The young master didn't say anything when he left."
Chu Changning pursed her lips, drank the medicinal food, and then stopped eating.
She stayed here for a few more days. She would go out to look at the mountain scenery on weekdays, but the Great Shaman basically didn't let her go far. She could only walk around the courtyard and couldn't figure out where she was.
I wonder if that guy found such a secluded place because he was afraid of the news leaking out.
Lately, her health has been improving, and the ingredients prepared in the kitchen have gradually become more nourishing. Her body has become less thin and more plump.
The high priest took her pulse again and, seeing that the poison in her body was gone, stopped giving her the medicine.
No longer having to drink those bitter medicines, Chu Changning's mood improved considerably.
During those six months, the northern frontier was in turmoil. Helian Ye did not want Yan Beimo to know his whereabouts, so he stayed away from the Western Regions. After settling Chu Changning in the small courtyard, he secretly went to the desert.
Later, the great shaman sent a message by carrier pigeon, and after learning that Chu Changning had regained consciousness, he returned to the small courtyard and watched her slowly recover.
Now that the Great Qi has increased its troops in the northern border, Helian Ye returned to the Western Regions royal court. He has only been back for a few days, and that bastard's people have already come looking for him.
He listened to the words of the prince's bodyguard and sneered.
"Let him keep an eye on it, whatever."
"I've heard that the Emperor of Great Qi has been increasing his troops quite a bit in the past six months. Is this move an indication that he's preparing to fight your Western Regions?"
The one speaking from below was Tuoba Hong, the young Khan of the northern desert.
Helian Ye raised an eyebrow, "If you can't even break through the first gate of the Northern Frontier, how can you expect to conquer the thirty-six kingdoms of the Western Regions?"
"I think this bastard has gone mad. Back then, the northern lands were in chaos for hundreds of years. He wants to throw our northern frontier into chaos, and the whole world into chaos."
Having said that, he picked up the golden cup, took a sip, and laughed, "Seeing him in such agony is truly satisfying."
Tuoba Hong snorted, "Why didn't you kill him on the Northern Liang battlefield?"
"That traitor Yuwen Yong has surrendered directly to Beidu."
Chu Changning stayed in the small courtyard. As the past gradually filled her mind, she thought about her obedient son every day, but unfortunately, she could not see him.
Later, when she got really bored, she started experimenting with cooking in the kitchen to keep her mind from wandering off.
There are plenty of ingredients in the northern frontier. She pestered the shaman for a long time before he agreed to buy ingredients for her, as well as vegetables from the Central Plains.
The northern frontier is vast and high, home to many kingdoms, and naturally there were towns that traded with the Central Plains.
After they bought the ingredients, Chu Changning ate flatbread, made a barbecue, sprinkled it with the local cumin, and paired it with the wine that Helian Ye had brought last time. They had a wonderful meal.
With nothing to do, she looked through the ingredients from the Central Plains that her maid had bought back, and even cooked fish salad, five-spice dried meat, gluten, and stir-fries, which she enjoyed immensely.
That day, I suddenly remembered a dish I had eaten at Chunfeng Pavilion before, called water shield soup with perch, which was very popular among the famous scholars of Yandu.
She tried to make it several times without success, and spent several days studying the recipe.
"Girl, you seem to be in a good mood lately."
Chu Changning paused slightly upon hearing the maid's voice, then smiled and hummed in agreement without speaking.
When she fell off the city wall and was about to be smashed to pieces, all the grudges and past grievances dissipated, and all she had to do was live well.
"Hey, what are you making? It smells so good!"
Suddenly, a laugh came from the doorway.
Chu Changning looked up and saw that bewitching, fairy-like face.
Their eyes met in mid-air.
He waved his hand, leaning casually against the doorway.
Why did you suddenly come here?
Helian Ye clicked his tongue and said, "Are you trying to drive away your savior?"
"---"
Chu Changning stopped talking, took the soup pot off the stove, and put it on the stone table outside.
"Want to eat together?"
Helian Ye sat opposite him and laughed, "It would be impolite to refuse."
As the two ate, Chu Changning poured him a drink.
Seeing her eagerness, Helian Ye raised an eyebrow. "No, I can do it myself."
"Let's discuss something."
Chu Changning put down her wine cup and blinked at him.
Helian Ye, "---"
"Isn't it better for An Sheng to stay here? There's war going on outside, where can she go alone?"
Seeing that he knew her intentions, Chu Changning simply said, "I can't be locked up here by you forever."
"Isn't it good to stay here?" he grinned smugly. "Or do you want to come back to the royal court with me?"
"---"
"Of course I'm willing, is A-Wan going?"
Chu Changning felt that she couldn't communicate with him and that he always misled her.
"Helian Ye!"
Are you angry?
He smiled and raised an eyebrow, his glassy eyes filled with a captivating, alluring light.
Chu Changning felt a chill run down her spine from his tone and suddenly shivered.
“Awan promised me something before, but she hasn’t done it yet. It’s time for you to fulfill your promise.”
What do you want?
Helian Ye pretended to think for a moment, then laughed and said, "Now that I've saved your life again, do you owe me again?"
"---"
Chu Changning simply couldn't refute it, "---"
Seeing that she remained silent, Helian Ye stood up and slowly walked towards her.
A cool breeze swept around the courtyard, and he leaned down and chuckled softly.
"Otherwise, Ah Wan should repay him with her body."
