Chapter 5 The weasel pays New Year's greetings to the chicken
After having dinner at the Jiang family home, Jiang Qingying ran back to her apartment. As soon as she entered, she heard the footsteps of her dog running towards her. In the time it took to change her shoes, the dog was already at her feet.
It's a Schnauzer.
Jiang Qingying squatted down and cupped its face in her hands. "Dog Egg, did you miss me?"
The puppy blinked its eyes, as if to say, "I miss her."
Jiang Qingying chuckled and stared at it.
The person who initially got a pet thought about bringing Fugui over to keep as a pet because they felt the house was quiet. However, Qin Qing objected, saying that since she wasn't there, she shouldn't be reminded of her loved one by seeing the pet.
The wealth and honor were what she gave to Qin Qing.
Jiang Qingying had no choice but to go to a pet store to find a suitable pet. She immediately took a liking to Gou Dan, who was only three months old at the time. His grayish fur was very neatly groomed, and his watery eyes were endearing. However, perhaps because of the Schnauzer breed, Gou Dan looked gloomy.
Hmm... she looks somewhat like Lu Jinyuan.
That was her first thought when she saw Gou Dan.
The little dog was quite intelligent; it sensed that Jiang Qingying wanted to take it with her, so it quickly tried to please her by wagging its tail and licking the back of her hand, which melted Jiang Qingying's heart.
Dog Egg was brought home and raised for half a year. It has doubled in size. It usually stays by Jiang Qingying's side quietly and doesn't like to bark. But whenever it feels that it has lost favor, it will tug at Jiang Qingying's sleeve and act cute to beg for love. Jiang Qingying is very fond of this.
Jiang Qingying looked at Gou Dan and thought of Lu Jinyuan, who looked very similar to it, and naturally she also remembered what he had said in the car earlier that day.
Arranged marriage...
- In business, there are no permanent enemies or friends, but we can be husband and wife forever.
She didn't think Lu Jinyuan was capable of sweet talk; she initially dismissed his words with disdain. However, she couldn't deny that she was somewhat moved at one point.
Reason prevailed over emotion, pulling her back in time.
"Dog Egg, they're all men, what do you think is going on in a man's head?"
Dog Egg looked innocent, indicating that he didn't understand what she was saying.
Jiang Qingying shook its two little paws and continued, "Who proposes like that? Only a fool would agree!"
Dog Egg couldn't pretend he didn't hear her, so he had no choice but to call out in response.
Upon hearing this, Jiang Qingying was extremely excited. "You also think I'm right, right? Arranged marriage? What a load of rubbish! Can't we live well together?"
Dog Egg barked again, louder than before. Jiang Qingying was very satisfied, put it down, and went to take a bath and go to bed.
Finally freed, Gou Dan ran back to his little house and played happily.
---
Time passed, and a week had gone by since their last encounter and confrontation with Lu Jinyuan.
They met again at a cocktail party. Naturally, many people came over to toast and greet her, and Jiang Qingying responded to each one in a perfunctory manner. She didn't like drinking, so she would give most people a slight smile to save face and do enough to maintain appearances. Only a few people would give her a few sips of wine.
Feeling her alcohol tolerance was about to drop, Jiang Qingying grabbed a glass of juice and rinsed her mouth.
"Your drinking capacity is nothing like that of a domineering CEO," Lin Tingwan retorted while sipping her favorite champagne.
Jiang Qingying glanced at the wine glass in her hand, raised an eyebrow, and laughed, "Should I call Song Mingxu over to discipline you, you little drunkard?"
Lin Tingwan looked bored and scoffed. Nan Chun, who was sitting behind her, teased, "So what's so good about marriage? You're controlled like a dog."
"Hey, hey, hey!" Lin Tingwan corrected her with exaggerated gestures, "They're not married yet, they're just engaged."
Nan Chun: "What's the difference? It's only a matter of time."
Jiang Qingying rested her chin on her hand, looking at her two sisters, and suddenly asked thoughtfully, "Has any gossip been circulating lately?"
The two people being questioned turned around at the same time and met Jiang Qingying's thoughtful expression. They exchanged a glance and instinctively felt that something was wrong.
Nan Chun: "When did you start paying attention to gossip?"
Jiang Qingying: "Gossiping is human nature."
The two were skeptical, but Nan Chun continued, "But when we used to discuss gossip, you always scoffed at it."
"..." Jiang Qingying's face stiffened slightly as she explained, "I used to be busy with work, but I've been quite free lately, so I need some gossip to lighten the mood."
"You actually have free time?" Lin Tingwan exclaimed as if she had discovered something amazing. "Then come shopping with me tomorrow."
Jiang Qingying took a sip of juice and coldly refused her: "No, I'd be half dead if I went shopping with you."
Lin Tingwan felt like crying when she heard this. "Nan Chun is such a big star. We always get photographed when we go out together, and you never have time to hang out with me. What did I do to deserve having you two as my best friends?"
Nan Chun stroked the back of Lin Tingwan's head with his palm and said with a smile, "Go ahead and take pictures. You're practically a celebrity, what are you afraid of?"
Lin Tingwan stuck out her tongue. "I'm just a small-time game streamer. I'm afraid of being exposed to the public eye and ruining my chances."
At this moment, a commotion broke out in the reception room.
Jiang Qingying looked in the direction of the sound and saw a white piano that had just been set up on the stage. The emcee of the party tested the microphone and, after confirming that it was working properly, signaled to the other staff.
"We have invited the renowned pianist Shen Shuyun to perform for us at this reception. Please give her a round of applause!"
The party was attended by people from the elite circle. As soon as she finished speaking, thunderous applause erupted, giving Shen Shuyun from the Lu family a great deal of face.
Shen Shuyun wore a plain-colored long dress, her long, straight black hair was neatly styled, and her delicate makeup was just right. Her gentle and elegant temperament made people want to take a second look.
Jiang Qingying watched as she lifted her skirt and slowly walked from the edge of the stage to the center, smiling and bowing slightly. Her movements were elegant and confident. She thought to herself, "If I were a man at this moment, I would probably be completely captivated."
Unfortunately, sometimes people are just inherently incompatible.
Shen Shuyun, Nan Chun, and Lin Tingwan all went to the same high school. Back then, they attended a prestigious private school, and the people around them all came from extremely wealthy families. They were either powerful or influential, or both.
Shen Shuyun is special; she was raised by the Lu family, a fact well-known in this circle where there are no secrets. However, due to the Lu family's status, people don't have many opinions about her, and there are even quite a few people who fawn over her. But she is insecure, or perhaps proud and aloof, and disdains those who are steeped in money and reek of materialism at such a young age. She knows she is different from others and has always been a loner.
Jiang Qingying disliked her superficial judgment of people, her tendency to generalize and categorize everyone into the same group. That's why, despite knowing each other for so long, they couldn't even manage a basic greeting.
Upon seeing Shen Shuyun, Lin Tingwan seemed to remember something and whispered to her two friends, "I heard that Shen Shuyun's engagement was broken off."
Jiang Qingying's eyelashes trembled slightly, but she didn't speak.
"A childhood betrothal to Lu Jinyuan?" Nan Chun pondered for a moment, then said, "I think I heard that Lu Jinyuan personally approached Old Master Lu to discuss it."
"How did you know?" Jiang Qingying was somewhat shocked, because Nan Chun had been staying in the film crew for the past few months filming in a closed environment. If even she knew about this, then it was likely that the news had spread widely, and it might even be true.
“This has caused quite a stir, didn’t you know?” Nan Chun replied.
Jiang Qingying blinked, paused for a moment, and said, "...I've heard a little about it."
“I don’t think it’s fake. Lu Jinyuan returned to China two years ago, and he’s thirty years old. If he wanted to get married, he would have done so long ago. If these two were truly in love, how could there not be any rumors about their relationship? Most importantly, Song Mingxu said he personally heard Lu Jinyuan admit it, but how exactly did he convince Old Master Lu?”
Lin Tingwan's analysis was very logical and reasonable.
Jiang Qingying was already furious, but when she caught a glimpse of Lu Jinyuan approaching from the distance, she immediately switched to acting.
"I'm still a little drunk, I'm going out for some fresh air."
Nan Chun: "Do you want me to keep you company?"
"No need." Jiang Qingying said and ran off.
A weasel is offering New Year's greetings to a chicken; why aren't you running away?
