Chapter 9: Midnight End

The room suddenly became quiet.

Du Rui, Zheng Yuanyuan and the children all held their breath and stared straight at the window.

The window was covered with curtains, so I couldn't see what was inside.

After a few seconds of silence, Yu Jiaojiao asked, "Who's knocking on the window?"

Zheng Yuanyuan immediately turned around and made a hushing gesture to her.

Yu Jiaojiao covered her mouth anxiously.

She was responded by a few crashing sounds, bang bang bang.

Du Rui threw the wet pants in his hand onto the podium and winked at Zheng Yuanyuan. Zheng Yuanyuan immediately understood and beckoned the little ones to come into her arms.

Children are good at reading their teachers' expressions. When they saw Zheng Yuanyuan and Du Rui's cautious expressions, they immediately learned to be cautious as well, even speaking in whispers: "Teacher, what's hitting the glass?"

Zheng Yuanyuan shook her head, not daring to move her eyes away from the window.

There were many crashes, even increasing in number, like stones wrapped in cloth hitting glass, the sound was deep but not harsh.

Du Rui walked to the window with a torch, paused, and opened the curtains little by little.

In the light of the fire, he saw several large insects flying against the glass. Some were the moths he had just seen, and some were new, a kind of black crustacean.

As the torches approached, the insects moved even faster, crashing into each other desperately.

Du Rui breathed a sigh of relief.

Bugs were fine, but what he feared most was encountering the monsters he had seen in the corridor. He didn't have Qi Mi's ability to kill and escape.

Zheng Yuanyuan was scared but curious. Seeing Du Rui standing there without any reaction, she asked weakly, "Teacher Du, what is it?" As she said this, her mind was already filled with all kinds of horrific scenes.

Du Rui lowered the curtains and said calmly, "It's nothing, just a moth. It saw the light and flew over here."

"oh."

Zheng Yuanyuan closed her eyes and breathed a sigh of relief.

When the children heard it was just a moth, a look of bewilderment immediately appeared on their faces. Zhao Yize let go of Zheng Yuanyuan's arm and stood up straight. "What? It's actually a little moth. I used to raise one when I was a kid."

Zheng Yuanyuan reacted and looked up: "?"

When you were a child?

Yu Jiaojiao also curled her lips and broke free from Zheng Yuanyuan's arms: "Boring, I thought it was a monster with eight legs."

"I thought it was a monster with three heads and twelve legs!" Wang Xiaohu shouted, as if he had entered into some strange imagination and showed off.

After realizing it was a big mistake, the children threw themselves into the pile of toys again.

Ye Shushi and Ye Shuci, twin sisters who had just woken up, rubbed their eyes and told Zheng Yuanyuan in a baby voice that they were hungry. Zheng Yuanyuan said she would be ready soon and stood up to get two clean paper cups from the podium.

Du Rui came over and took it: "You go, I'll take care of it here."

Zheng Yuanyuan nodded and took the torch. While the children weren't paying attention, she quietly opened the door and walked out, then quietly closed it again.

In the corridor, a burnt smell mixed with a foul odor that I had never smelled before penetrated my nose.

She couldn't help but dry heave a few times and quickly covered her mouth and nose. After taking a few steps, she heard the door creak behind her. She turned around and saw Du Rui sticking half of his body out.

"I'm fine, Teacher Du, you go take care of the children." Zheng Yuanyuan covered her mouth and nose and spoke in a muffled voice.

Du Rui: "I can see both sides, you go."

After hearing what he said, Zheng Yuanyuan did not refuse and felt inexplicably relieved.

She was not tall and had a baby face. She was now wearing a cartoon-style down jacket, which made her look like a schoolgirl who had not yet grown out of her childishness. She could not carry anything on her shoulders or with her hands, so Du Rui was naturally worried.

He was leaning against the wall, his hands busy tearing apart the bread bag.

Seeing Zheng Yuanyuan walk into the bathroom, he slowly straightened his body. Turning around, he saw his little nephew Wu Muchen standing beside him with a resentful look on his face.

The pink girls' cotton coat she was wearing seemed a little small, and it made Wu Muchen's belly bulge out like a small pot.

Du Rui glanced at him and took out a piece of bread: "What for?"

Wu Muchen said nothing, her hands in her trouser pockets, following him silently. She watched Du Rui put the bread in a paper cup and gave it to the two twins from the Ye family.

Du Rui turned around, and Wu Muchen had no time to dodge and bumped into his leg.

"Want some bread?" Du Rui asked.

Wu Muchen shook his head.

"Then don't follow me." Du Rui slid him aside. He walked to the podium, poured two small glasses of water for the two little girls, and gently blew on them to cool them down.

Wu Muchen still walked over with a resentful look on his face.

Du Rui: "Just say what you want to say."

Wu Muchen stared at him for two seconds, shook his head, and sighed, "Uncle, I'm so disappointed in you."

"how?"

"Haven't you seen it yet?" Wu Muchen deliberately pulled up the clothes on his body.

Du Rui suddenly understood and said calmly, "It's a special situation, just bear with it."

"?"

Wu Muchen's face suddenly puffed up like a bun. He clasped his hands together and angrily plunged into the corner of the classroom, not moving.

Not good at expressing himself, he always uses this method to express his dissatisfaction. Because he is too quiet, he is often ignored by his uncle Du Rui.

Fortunately, there was Zheng Yuanyuan. When she ran back, she saw the "pink egg" locked in the corner of the classroom and quickly asked Du Rui, "What's wrong?"

Du Rui whispered that it was okay.

Zheng Yuanyuan knew immediately that Wu Muchen was sulking. This nephew had the same temper as his uncle: not only was he quiet, but when he did express his emotions, he was also overly quiet. Compared to other children who would cry, she felt more sorry for a child like Wu Muchen who didn't cry.

After she placed the extinguished torch against the wall, she squatted next to Wu Muchen and asked him what was wrong in a gentle voice.

Wu Muchen shook his head without saying a word, his little hands constantly picking at the gaps between the tiles.

"If you don't tell me, I'll just guess..." Zheng Yuanyuan pretended to think, "Let me think, is Wu Muchen hungry?"

Wu Muchen shook his head.

Zheng Yuanyuan: "Do you want to go to the bathroom? Or are you feeling unwell?"

Wu Muchen still shook his head.

At this time, Du Rui couldn't stand it any longer and came over to expose: "He doesn't like wearing this girl's down jacket."

Zheng Yuanyuan smiled when she heard this: "So that's what's going on..." She patted Wu Muchen's head and said, "Wu Muchen, are you unhappy because you don't like this dress? It's okay, just take it off if you don't like it. But you have to promise the teacher that you will wrap yourself tightly in your blanket while sitting by the fire. If you get cold, you have to put it back on, okay?"

Wu Muchen: “…”

Zheng Yuanyuan tilted her head and leaned in to look him in the eye: "Is this okay?"

Wu Muchen: “…”

He scratched the tile cracks with his little hands a few more times, and when Zheng Yuanyuan asked for the third time, he finally nodded. He followed Zheng Yuanyuan to the crib, not forgetting to give his uncle a long look.

Finally taking off the girl's clothes, Wu Muchen's expression relaxed a lot. Wrapped in a small blanket, she curled up on a small chair and sat obediently beside the fire.

For a moment, there was a rare harmony in the room.

After eating two small breads, the twins put on thick clothes and joined the army of toys. The two cubs were asleep, and Wu Muchen sat obediently beside them and warmed himself by the fire.

Only Wang Xiaohu kept persuading Du Rui to help him bake his pants, saying that he couldn't wait to join the team fighting monsters.

Du Rui had no choice but to sit by the fire and concentrate on drying his pants.

Not long after, Wu Muchen stared at Du Rui and asked, "Uncle, are you hiding something from us?"

"No."

"Humph, you're lying. You're hiding something from us."

Wu Muchen was born with doe eyes, which were round and very cute. He looked more like a girl, and when he frowned, he always gave people a feeling of being wronged and pitiful. He said, "Teacher Qi has been out for so long and hasn't come back. I'm very worried."

Du Rui didn't expect him to say such a thing. He was stunned for a moment, and after his Adam's apple rolled up and down, he raised his head: "Don't worry, she's fine."

"Really?" Wu Muchen raised an eyebrow, unconvinced. "Uncle, aren't you worried? Teacher Qi is a girl. What if she really encounters a monster? Is she really as powerful as Sailor Moon?"

These three questions left Du Rui speechless.

To say I'm not worried would be a lie.

This is the end of the world full of dangers. Who knows if we will encounter that kind of terrible monster again... No, maybe there are monsters more terrifying than those.

But now Qi Mi's ability is obviously above theirs, and there are so many children to take care of here. No matter how worried he is, he can't leave here.

not to mention……

Du Rui raised his eyes and looked at Zheng Yuanyuan who was playing with the children.

She was probably pretending to be a baby now, putting her hands on the corners of her eyes and pretending to cry. Coincidentally, she glanced over and saw Du Rui looking at her, so she covered her face in embarrassment.

Du Rui lowered his head, a barely perceptible smile flashing across his lips.

"Uncle!" At this time, Wu Muchen's face puffed up again.

"Huh?" Du Rui came back to his senses.

Wu Muchen: "I'm talking to you, which little goblin are you thinking about?"

Du Rui was silent for two seconds, then tilted his head: "?"

Fairy?

At this moment, two sounds of knocking on glass were heard near the window, which was very out of place among the thumping sounds.

Zheng Yuanyuan and Du Rui immediately tensed up and exchanged glances.

She quickly covered the chatty Yu Jiaojiao's mouth and whispered to everyone to keep quiet. Du Rui also helped Wu Muchen stand up, holding him under his arm, and backed away to get the simple torch by the wall.

In the silence, Wang Xiaohu, who was lying on the small bed, spoke slowly: "Who was knocking on the window? Teacher Qi or the monster?"

Du Rui: “…”

Du Rui was using his eyes to warn Wang Xiaohu not to speak, when he heard a voice from outside the window the next second: "It's me, Teacher Qi."

The alarm bells in Zheng Yuanyuan and Du Rui's minds rang almost at the same time -

This voice is sharp and weird, it's definitely not Qi Mi's!

Du Rui hurriedly threw Wu Muchen to Zheng Yuanyuan, then ran over a few steps and grabbed Wang Xiaohu, who was still trying to talk, covered his mouth, wrapped him in a quilt and threw him on the bedding.

With Zheng Yuanyuan as the center, all eight awake children depend on her.

After locking the door, Du Rui stood beside the two sleeping children, holding the charred stick tightly. The stick was thick and should be able to kill one or two of them with a blow, but the premise was that they were normal humans.

The silence in the room seemed to arouse the dissatisfaction of the person outside the window. Pa Pa, the person knocked on the window again: "It's me, Teacher Qi, why are you guys silent?"
