Although the city of Alicante is not remote and poor, it must be said that the city government is built in a magnificent manner.
The city gate is tall, and although the city wall is dilapidated, one can still see the grandeur and magnificence of the early days. There are several round holes at the bottom of the city wall on both sides, and there seems to be something hidden inside. Jiang Jin felt uncomfortable all over when she saw it.
The most wonderful place is the small moat in the city palace, which surrounds the entire city palace. Anyone who wants to enter the city palace can only go across the wooden bridge in front of the gate.
Jiang Jin walked around the palace, and the more she looked, the more she felt something was odd. The palace knights, clad in fine, heavy armor, circled the palace again and again. What were they protecting? Or were they guarding against something?
The city of Alicante is so poor, but the city government still supports so many knights. This matter seems wrong no matter how you look at it. Moreover, the previous mayor has been sentenced to death by the Messenger of Light, but the city government does not seem to be affected at all. It is still the same as before.
Jiang Jin was thinking, but she didn't stop. She walked onto the wooden bridge with the little one, and instantly attracted the attention of the two knights guarding the door.
"Stop! This is the forbidden area of the city! Retreat quickly!" The knight on the right stretched out his hand and made a gesture to stop moving forward.
Jiang Jin didn't waste any time talking to him and threw the silver city token over.
The knight caught it in a hurry. The two looked at the token in their palms and whispered to each other for a while. One of them quickly pushed open the city gate and ran in. After a while, he came over with a black-haired man with a middle-aged body who looked honest and strong.
Compared with this group of knights in armor and with solemn expressions, this middle-aged man in coarse linen clothes looked approachable and kind.
Jiang Jin guessed that he should be the housekeeper.
"Knight Commander, it's her!" The knight led Brook forward and pointed in the direction of Jiang Jin.
Brook raised his eyes and glanced at Jiang Jin, his gaze lingering for a second on her fashion that was gleaming with glassy light, and then he walked towards Jiang Jin with a smile on his face.
"I guess you are the knight designated by the high priest! I am Brook! Temporarily serving as the commander of the Knights of the City Palace. Please come this way. The welcoming banquet has been prepared for you!" Brook wanted to help Jiang Jin lift the basket in her hand, but Jiang Jin waved at him.
The little guy poked his head out of the basket and looked curiously at the man with a voice as loud as a bell and a hearty laugh.
"May the God of Light bless you." Brook met the little guy's gaze, smiled, stretched out his big hand and touched his head.
"Ah." The little guy twisted his body uncomfortably, trying to avoid his touch and retreated towards Jiang Jin.
"Your brother is so cute." Brooke smiled and talked to Jiang Jin.
Jiang Jin nodded and asked, "Brook, how long have you been serving as Knight Commander?"
"That's a long story." Brook was stunned for a moment, then quickly replied, "I've been serving as a knight in the Alicante City Hall for five years, ever since the last mayor appointed me Knight Commander, and I've been here ever since."
In five days, including Jiang Jin's, a total of three city officials were changed.
Jiang Jin suddenly became curious about what had become of the previous Knight Commander, the one who had appointed Brook as Knight Commander. "The previous Knight Commander made many mistakes, and the God of Light was wise enough to allow him to die as an atonement."
"It's just that this is my first time as mayor, and there are many things I'm not clear about. I also want to learn from my seniors. I wonder if the previous mayor is still in Alicante?" Jiang Jin asked suddenly as she stepped into the gate of the mayor's mansion.
Brook, who was half a step behind her, smiled slightly, "Damn it."
"But," Brooke changed the subject and continued in a low voice, "he died four days ago."
"Oh?" Jiang Jin said with interest. During the five-year period, two mayors died. This mayor's family was really unlucky. She pinched the chubby little hand that the little guy stretched out.
Walking in from the gate, the entire dark and damp interior of the city finally slowly unfolded before Jiang Jin.
The city looked majestic from the outside, but there was a bit of a musty smell inside. Walking through a slightly long dark corridor, only every ten or so steps would some sunlight shine into the darkness through the round holes in the city wall.
After Brook finished talking about his last trip to the city, he felt a little depressed and didn't say a word for a long time.
Jiang Jin didn't mind either. In fact, she preferred a quiet atmosphere.
The round hole was the one that Jiang Jie saw on the outside. She glanced at the circular arc on the inside. There was obvious wear and tear there. It should be an inlay hole for storing things, but now it was covered with cobwebs, which meant that this round hole had not been used for a long time.
Walking through the corridor, Jiang Jin finally welcomed the comfortable sunshine. At the same time, nearly one hundred and twenty servants in the city government had received orders and stood in a line in the hall.
The male servants stood in one row, the female servants stood in three rows, and the knights stood in two rows.
A preliminary estimate showed that there were at least twenty male servants, ten female servants, and forty knights.
The reason why there were a little more maids was that they included cooks, cleaning maids, sweeping maids, serving maids, etc. They all wore exactly the same maid uniforms, and Jiang Jin felt a little dizzy looking at them.
Brooke brought her a comfortable chair with an armchair. Jiang Jin thanked her softly and sat on the chair holding the little one.
"Chengyi, the housekeeper Yager is sick today and is not in the mansion. Let me introduce the situation of Chengyi mansion to you first." Brooke stood behind Jiang Jin.
For some reason, although Brooke called her "you" all the time, Jiang Jin didn't feel much respect from him.
During this hour, everyone in the city's mansion came to pay their respects to Jiang Jin. Jiang Jin said nothing. She seemed to be lazily leaning on a chair and drowsy.
In fact, she was really bored and almost fell asleep.
The maids here all had the same reaction. When they saw Jiang Jin for the first time, most of them were amazed. From the second glance onwards, they were filled with envy and jealousy, as well as an indescribable emotion.
The gazes of the male servants and knights were easier to understand. Their eyes were burning, and they couldn't wait to recommend themselves and climb into Jiang Jin's bed that night.
After reading it, Jiang Jin had only one thought in her mind: it was a mess, really too messy.
With the city being in such a mess, it's no wonder that Alicante is so backward and poor.
"That's enough, go do your own work." Jiang Jin showed a tired look, and Brooke immediately understood and led Jiang Jin to the room on the third floor.
The servants in the hall looked at each other and none of them moved.
Brooke closed the door of the room and the generous smile on his face faded. He stood at the railing on the third floor and looked down, squinting his eyes and cursing, "Why don't you go get some work!?"
The servants then dispersed.
