Chapter 13: A sudden turn of events

The bamboo leaves rustled in the wind, as if they were applauding the scene crazily.

Gu Chengrong, Gu Daqiang's uncle from the next room, blushed, glared at the man, and turned back to the house.

Gu Daqiang pulled Huo Qianli forward slowly. Now that he had seen Gu Chengrong's people, he was not afraid of being turned away again, unless Gu Chengrong really wanted to break off relations with him and never have anything to do with him again.

Sure enough, although Gu Chengrong went back angrily without saying a word, he did not close the door. Instead, he sat at the dining table in the main hall, quietly waiting for Gu Daqiang and his three companions to arrive.

Gu Daqiang smiled and shook the bag in his hand, then placed it on the table. "I specially went to the town to cut the braised pig ears and pig snouts."

Gu Chengrong glanced at him, then at Huo Qianli and Gu Haitao, then silently stood up and took out a white plastic bucket and a bag of fried peanuts from the cabinet beside him and put them on the table. He put his hand on the plastic bucket and looked at the three of them. "Let's not talk about the land. The old man will take advantage of his seniority today. Let's talk about it properly, three generations apart. If we want to talk about that, you can leave now."

This stubborn attitude is worthy of what his wife said a few days ago: stubborn and stubborn.

Huo Qianli opened his lips and was about to speak, but Gu Daqiang smiled and said, "Of course, we are here to reminisce with Third Dad. Don't say too much, just ask, Third Dad, have you ever had a drink at the same table with college students? No, right? Why don't you ask Third Mom to prepare a few more dishes?"

......

Huo Qianli was drunk.

No matter if you can't drink or you drink to forget your sorrow, as long as you want to get drunk, you will get drunk.

Gu Daqiang carried Huo Qianli back to the room, fetched a basin of hot water, wiped his face and feet, and covered him with a quilt.

Looking at Huo Qianli lying unconscious on the bed, Gu Daqiang reached out his hand, smoothed his unconsciously furrowed brows, pulled a chair and sat down, took out a cigarette, hesitated for a moment before lighting it, held it in his hand, and said softly:

"I am a rough man. I have been rolling around in the mud of Hushan Village for most of my life. I have seen a lot and my heart has become hardened."

"When you first came, I thought you were just here to get by like those people before you. Even if you went to the fields to dig the soil, I thought it was just a rooster shitting, and it would stop in a few days. I didn't expect you to persist for so long. Do you know that I am even more afraid of you."

"You may not understand. You are obviously doing this for our own good and want us to make more money. Why am I afraid? Because we farmers can't stand it."

"So, when Professor He came that day, I understood what you said, but I still rejected it in my heart. Although life now is not very good, it is much better than before with enough food and warm clothes. But that night, I thought about it all night, but I still couldn't think of any harm in your doing to us. I also thought of the tragic things that happened in the village over the years, all because of the word poverty. The next morning, when I saw the eyes of the two of you, I understood one thing, you are really doing this for our own good!"

"Don't worry, I'll take care of this."

He looked at Huo Qianli's frown again, sighed, and looked at the bottle of sleeping pills on the bedside table.

"Take advantage of this drink to have a good sleep. You haven't had a good sleep for a long time."

He stood up, poured a glass of water and placed it on the bedside, then turned off the light and walked out of the room.

In the quiet room, Huo Qianli frowned and turned over uncomfortably.

Coming out of Huo Qianli's room, Gu Daqiang grabbed a flashlight and walked out.

"Where are you going so late?" my wife shouted in the room.

Gu Daqiang didn't even turn his head and said, "I can't sleep, so I'm going out for a walk."

The door slammed shut, and a head quietly rose up from the window of a dark room on the second floor. It watched Gu Daqiang waving a flashlight and walking towards a house.

Early in the morning, Huo Qianli sat in the office with a cup of tea and a notebook open in front of him, but he had not written a single word today.

He knocked his head painfully, trying to stop the electric drill in his head.

Memories of yesterday gradually came to mind, from seeing the Zhan father and son conquer the boulder and find a way out, to Gu Chengrong being "stubborn", and then coming to an abrupt end after a glass of wine at the dinner table.

He looked at the detailed calculations he had made over the past few days on his notebook, those absolutely convincing and attractive figures, and put down his teacup helplessly. No one gave him a chance to speak!

His fingers tapped unconsciously on the table, and his mind worked hard, thinking of a way to break the deadlock.

Squeak.

The old door was pushed open.

An old man with a stern face walked in slowly with his hands behind his back.

"Mr. Gu, why are you here?"

Huo Qianli stood up in surprise, because the person who came was none other than Gu Chengrong, whom they almost missed last night.

Gu Chengrong's eyes swept across Huo Qianli's haggard face after drinking, and he sighed, "The old man is not heartless. Cadre Huo has tried so hard for our Hushan Village. If the old man doesn't let you speak up, it would be a bit too much."

Huo Qianli blinked, and his brain, which was not yet fully sober, tried its best to work. He hesitated with surprise and joy and said, "Are you willing to listen to me?"

"What? You don't want to talk? Then I'm leaving!"

"I want to, I want to, I want to! Come, old man, take a seat!"

"Let me make it clear first. I didn't say I had to agree."

"Okay! As long as you're willing to listen to me!"

Outside the room, Gu Daqiang squatted at the door, lit a cigarette, took a puff with satisfaction, and grinned.

......

The afternoon under the scorching sun is a time for wild children to run wildly in the hot wind, a time for tired men to eat and drink and take a nap to replenish their energy, and a time for housewives to take a break from busy housework and reminisce about the past.
