Chapter 14 Appeal to emotion and reason

After working for a while and each of them breaking off two or three baskets, the woman in red shook her slightly sore arms and said goodbye to the woman in black.

She did not get any wages for helping the woman in black, because if something happened at home, the woman in black would come to help her. This is also a unique way of mutual assistance among rural clans.

When she walked back home, the man had already gotten up. He was sitting under the eaves barefoot and shirtless, holding a large teacup, lost in thought.

She looked at the man and said, "Do you want me to heat up some food for you?"

The man said nothing, just shook his head.

She hesitated for a moment and said, "I just heard that many companies have agreed. Should we..."

She swallowed the words back when the man turned his head and glared at her. The answer was self-evident.

She sighed and walked silently into the house. Before she entered the dark house, she heard a shout from a distance, "Fourth brother, fourth sister-in-law, answer the phone at six o'clock in the evening!"

Her expression lit up with joy and she immediately turned around and agreed.

The man who had been silent under the eaves also spoke in response.

Because, the call came from their son who was working away from home.

No matter how I feel, I am always happy when I receive a call from my son.

Next to the Hushan Village Committee, there is the only convenience store in the village, and inside the convenience store is the only public telephone in the village.

Children working away from home and relatives living in other places who want to contact villagers have to use this landline phone.

Usually the person on the other end calls first, clearly states who they are looking for and whether it is urgent, arranges a time with the boss, and then calls back at the agreed time, ensuring that the person they are looking for is already waiting there.

Most people would come early like this couple. For them, this is a big deal and a rare break in their boring and dull life.

At 5:30 in the evening, the couple walked to the door of the convenience store.

"Hey, Fourth Baby, Fourth Sister, you're here so early!"

The lady in red smiled and said, "You are not too late!"

"Hey! Only your son is allowed to be filial!"

If you don't live nearby and are sitting here right now, it goes without saying that you are here to answer the phone.

The red-dressed woman looked around and said, "Why is the business so busy today? Have these bastards agreed to get their minds together?"

Everyone laughed, and after laughing they also muttered in their hearts, there are indeed a lot more people today than usual! It's not much worse than the few days before the Chinese New Year.

The shop owner who was leaning against the counter and looking at the scenery glanced at the village committee office, raised the corner of his mouth, and silently lit a cigarette. He felt good to have this feeling that he knew but others didn't!

The woman in red chatted with everyone for a few words, and then began to glance at the clock hanging on the wall of the store.

How come it’s not even six o’clock yet!

Normally, a day goes by without doing anything, but why is the watch running so slowly today?

But when it was six o'clock, she started to feel disgusted again. How come it was already two minutes past six and the phone call hadn't come yet?

Dead baby (parents scold their children, similar to turtle son, kill one thousand enemies and lose eight hundred of your own) is so unstable in doing things, even making phone calls is not on time...

Ding-a-ling!

While she was cursing in her heart, the phone suddenly rang. The woman took a step forward and grabbed the receiver before her man could. She said happily, "Hello! My son!"

The man who had just taken a step forward touched his nose, slowly walked to the side, and pricked up his ears to listen to the sound coming out of the receiver.

"Mom, is Dad here?"

The woman's face suddenly fell, and she angrily slammed the receiver into the man's hand. She turned around and was about to leave in a huff, but she couldn't help her curiosity, so she quietly returned to the man and also pricked up her ears.

"Hello."

"Dad, I called to tell you something."

"Um."

"Murakami called me and told me about the policy. I think that land... oh yes, land concentration is a good thing! You should agree."

The man subconsciously frowned and wanted to curse, but suddenly he remembered that the person in front of him was his son, whom he hadn't seen for almost a year. He swallowed his words back and remained silent.

The person on the other end of the phone knew her old man's temper and subconsciously wanted to raise her voice. Then she remembered what Officer Huo had told her, took a deep breath, and said slowly, "I know what you are worried about. Don't worry! The village is just a contractor. They can't take our land. They still have to pay rent. You earn more than before. Just like when I work outside, I also rent someone else's house. Does it mean that it becomes my own after living there for a while? If all the landlords here think like you, then won't your son have to sleep on the street or under a bridge?"

"Dad, I've heard Murakami explain this in detail. You can set the price before you plant. No matter what the price is outside, the pharmaceutical factory will buy it directly at that price. There is no risk at all. It's such a good thing, why are you hesitating!"

The man remained silent, and a depressed voice came from the receiver, "If you don't agree, I won't come back this year! Just looking at it makes me angry!"

The man immediately became angry and was about to say something with a frown, when he suddenly felt a pain in his waist. He turned his head and met his wife's demonstrative eyes.

The woman who usually didn't dare to say a word in front of him now stiffened her neck, glared at him, and looked very aggressive.

“Okay!”

After hanging up the phone, the man glared at the woman and said, "Give me the money!"

The woman was in a very good mood. She took out a cloth bag from her waist, opened it layer by layer, took out three dollars from the roll of change and handed it over.

The boss counted the time spent on the pay phone and said with a smile, "Fourth sister-in-law, five minutes, that's one dollar."
