Chapter 5: If you can’t ask others for help, you can only ask yourself

In the steel jungle in the early morning, the air was already slightly hot.

Walking in the community, Huo Qianli missed the air of Hushan Village for the first time.

"Teacher, where are we going?"

Huo Qianli helped carry a box of tea and spoke curiously.

"You can treat minor illnesses yourself, and go to ordinary doctors for common illnesses. For serious illnesses in your village, you can only see a specialist."

Han Zhiyuan straightened his clothes and said with a smile, "I'm going to meet an expert on agricultural and rural issues. Well, he's the kind who's been to the State Council to give a report."

Along the way, Huo Qianli, who was already excited, was even more overjoyed when he heard Han Zhiyuan briefly introduce Professor He's life.

If there is guidance from experts like Professor He who have in-depth research on rural issues, Hushan Village will definitely be able to find a good way out. Then the lives of the people and their own future will be better.

The fantasy made his blood boil, but the cold reality soon chilled his heart.

After listening to Huo Qianli's explanation of his purpose, Professor He remained polite and courteous, but he played Tai Chi in his words and avoided talking about giving advice.

When they really couldn't get around it, they used the excuse that they were not familiar with the local conditions and couldn't make any random comments. Huo Qianli and Han Zhiyuan tried to bring the topic back several times, but each time failed.

In desperation, Han Zhiyuan had to say goodbye and leave with Huo Qianli.

......

"My dear, fly slowly and be careful of the thorny roses ahead..."

Butterflies were flying on the small screen in front of the bus, and Pang Long's gentle voice was flowing out from the low-quality speakers. Huo Qianli got on the return bus with disappointment and a pile of materials borrowed from the Shuzhou University Library.

The road gradually narrowed and became bumpier;

The buildings gradually became lower and more dilapidated;

From a bus to a minibus, and then to a motorcycle, Huo Qianli stood on the land of Hushan Village again.

He handed a bottle of wine and a box of facial masks he bought on the road to Gu Daqiang and his wife who were waiting for him at the door. After saying hello to the couple who were smiling from ear to ear, Huo Qianli walked into the room awkwardly, holding his butt.

He took off his pants and laid them on the ground. Looking at the cut on his back pocket that had been made by a razor blade at some point, Huo Qianli rubbed his temple in frustration. "How do I look like a rich man?"

He went to the bathroom to take a cold shower to wash off the mud. When he came out refreshed, Gu Daqiang and his wife had already prepared food and were waiting for him.

After politely declining Gu Daqiang's invitation to have a couple of drinks, Huo Qianli hurriedly ate a few mouthfuls of rice, then went into the room and opened a book.

The lights in the middle of the night shone lonely, illuminating Huo Qianli's face, but the light in his eyes was slowly dimming.

Putting the book upside down on the table, he leaned back in his chair dejectedly.

It’s too difficult!

Including the library life in the past few weekends, I have looked through a lot of relevant materials, but I didn't find any useful information.

Those commonly used tips for getting rich are simply unrepeatable in this remote hilly village.

Thinking of this, Gu Daqiang's "well-intentioned" persuasion and Professor He's indifference after learning of his purpose all resurfaced in his mind.

Doubts naturally arise: Am I really thinking too simply?

With my limited knowledge and experience, can I really change the fate of a village?

Or just like what the village chief said, now that we don’t have to pay taxes to the emperor, we can still work and earn money. Even though life is a bit bleak, at least we have enough food and clothing. Do people really need our help?

Why not just take the opportunity to relax for two or three years? After all, so many people have failed to tackle this tough problem, and no one will blame you. By then, you will have enough experience and can go back to work hard again?

The thought of doubt is like a breach in a dam. Once it arises, countless other thoughts will follow, trying to surround it and break down the dam of the mind.

Fortunately, years of rough life and self-improvement have already strengthened the dam in Huo Qianli's heart to make it indestructible.

He took a deep breath, sat up again, and turned to the next page.

......

It is the end of August, which is still July according to the lunar calendar, and is close to the White Dew season, when the temperature changes. For farmers working in the fields for a living, these days cannot be wasted.

Although there is a better way out nowadays, namely working, not everyone can go out to work.

Those who are elderly, have children to care for, or have other considerations all still farm the land, continuing the livelihood passed down from generation to generation.

A strange figure appeared in the fields of Hushan Village.

The cadre from the big city actually rolled up his trouser legs, rolled up his sleeves and joined their ranks.

The college student who used to play with pens actually started to wield hoes.

The villagers were surprised, watched, and then snickered with smugness.

So what if they are college students? They are still digging dirt and eating dust like us.

Huo Qianli didn't have time to pay attention to those thoughts. He earnestly asked the old farmers about farming knowledge and learned about their lives.

This was the solution he came up with after he had looked through all the books and materials and still had no clue. To be precise, it wasn't really a solution.

Since reading thousands of books is not enough, then travel thousands of miles;

Since talking about it doesn't work, then just get up and do it.

He didn't really want to be a farmer, he wasn't that stupid.

He just wanted to understand their real lives, hoping to use some inspiration to discover some possible clues and directions.

The so-called iron head skill is nothing more than being willing to spend energy to try various possibilities and finally find a solution to the problem.

Gu Daqiang came to persuade him once. After listening to his reasons, he looked at him deeply, and walked away without expressing any opinion.

Time flies, and soon it is Friday again. It is the first time that Huo Qianli stayed in Hushan Village on the weekend.

On Friday evening, Gu Daqiang, who did not send Huo Qianli to town, smoked half a pack of cigarettes alone in the office.

The next morning, he, who had stopped farming a long time ago, found a hoe from somewhere and went to the fields with Huo Qianli.

Half a day later, he disappeared silently with blisters on his palms, and never appeared in the field again.

......

The weather is still hot, and farmers working in the fields work for a few hours in the morning before the sun rises, then go back to eat and sleep. They wait until four or five in the evening when the sun sets, and then go out again to work until dark.

At 10:30 in the morning, Huo Qianli sat casually on the edge of the field, wearing a straw hat and rolled up his trouser legs. He drank from a large teapot, wiped the sweat off his face with a towel around his neck, and breathed heavily.

He was very tired during this week, but he also gained something.

His actions brought him closer to the villagers. The old farmers had nothing to hide and chatted with him a lot, including some after-dinner gossip in the village. This allowed him to quickly gain a deeper understanding of the entire Hushan Village and its villagers.

"Unfortunately, there is still no direction."

Huo Qianli supported himself on the edge of the field with his hands, leaned back slightly, and looked weakly at the horizon. He couldn't be a farmer for just a year or two, right?

"Officer Huo! Let's go! Let's go back and eat!"

He heard a shout from behind, and an old man picked up a hoe and waved at him.
